As much I love the Bumblebee movie, this still sickened me because this is Peter Cullen. The legendary voice of Optimus Prime. He deserved treated better. Darth Night Killer Netflix is just the distribution platform they don’t hire the VAs for siege that’s by Rooster Teeth, Hasbro in this instance should have stepped in with RT to provide the talent and more than likely (speculation here) brought in the VA for prime from cyberverse as he may have been more cost effective than Peter.

Man as much as I love the Bumblebee movie this really sickens me as well just over all disgust me on how bad this amazing iconic voice actor Peter the man himself was/is treated. I was wondering why Jon Baily was doing the voice for Optimus during the promotion for the film and I just thought he wanted to do the voice for Optimus Prime again as a little fun gag, but no they just treated Peter like dirt and I'm tired of these big studios doing this to many iconic actors and voice actors. I really hope Hasbro and Paramount get their act together and start becoming a company with good treatment. Wouldn't be surprised if Lorenzo was the one behind this nonsense.

Here’s my takeaway from this. I’m torn. On the one hand, I think Peter having to mimic Jon wasn’t a good idea. But we shouldn’t blame this on Travis Knight, because maybe he wanted Peter to go full blown prime and I guess he wasn’t able to do that considering the budget. Also those cybertron scenes were added in during reshoots. Not only did they have to spend the money on the special effects, but they had to pay everyone else i.e. John Cena, Haylee Steinfeld, etc. and I’d say the same for Jake Tillman, because like you said with Jon Bailey, it’s not his fault. He was just doing his job and we shouldn’t blame him for it. Besides he’s still very young, he’ll improve. And I think Peter Cullen. Frank welker and hasbro have made piece since they both are going to be in a panel at pulsecon.

The difference between Cullen's Optimus' over all these years and all the imitations all comes down to the inflictions he can convey. His Optimus can get angry, happy, neutral, destructive, nurturing, dad-like ect ect. When his Optimus gets angry, that visceral growl and roar he does is unmatched. Particularly his work on TFP and it's fight scenes.

This movie had a tighter budget. Peter Cullen probably costs a fortune as he's probably one of the biggest voice actors out there, so they probably thought we'll give the other guy a chance and we'll just pay Peter Cullen for one day to cut costs. Simple as that. Objectively I can't tell that the Prime voice is out of sync with his mask moving either. Just as in sync as the original cartoon. What we get is a more younger sounding 80s G1 Optimus Prime.

No offence, Jon Baileys Optimus isn’t good. He tries to imitate Peter Cullens voice and just does not do it well. He tries to be to deep and doesn’t have that slight growl in his voice like Cullen does. Don’t get me wrong, he does many other voices very very well, he just can’t do Prime. And now hearing and watching this video, it upsets me to know how they treated Peter. Telling him to mimic someone else who is mimicking him, whom doesn’t do Optimus’ voice justice hurts. Union-busting. Peter Cullen is part of an actor's union, and thus if they hired him they would have to abide by practices that ensure his rights as an actor are fully protected lest they face legal action. No one on Hasbro or Paramount's end wants to deal with that nor the prices that his work would entail, so they just hire other people instead and aggressively pretend it's not happening.

As an armature voice actor, and long time fan of Peter Cullen, and O-Prime, yeah, I couldn't help but feel like there was no gravitas to what he was saying. The pacing we had grown accustomed to in the previous live action movies, when it came to his speech patterns were gone. Everything he said felt like he was trying to hurry up and say it. Peter has said that his brother was kind of his inspiration for Prime’s voice and character, so it makes sense that Peter would care about how Optimus sounds and acts. His brother was in the military I believe and before he went to audition for the part his brother asked what character he was auditioning for. Peter said, “Well I’m playing a truck.” His brother said, “A truck?” And Peter said, “Yeah but he’s a hero, he’s a hero truck.” And his brother calmly responded, “Peter, if you’re gonna be a hero, be strong enough to be gentle.” And Peter has said that has really stuck with him his entire life. And his brother’s voice and words were how he found the sound for Optimus.

Now THIS video kind of sickens me as well. I know Jon, him and I worked together and talked often in our early days a ton. We would talk about projects we'd wanna work on together, or what we were up too, or just goofing around. Jon does a good Optimus Prime, he does a lot of good voices for various characters and a lot of you know that. But Peter has met Jon before, Jon even did his impression of Optimus FOR Peter at a Botcon and Peter was blown away. Now in films, when you're doing these kind of movies, you gotta model off of someone, and if you got somebody who can do a decent job you can model off t hat person. Peter has done multiple TF projects since 07 now, live action, animated, you name it. His price for being in such a small role for a film might of been to high to use for the number of months it was taking to do the animation, we don't know. But it is NOT uncommon in the industry to work this way. Peter even did it when he started working on the Bayformer projects voicing Ironhide and he wasn't even going to be the character.

In all honesty, I liked the voice of Optimus in The Bumblebee movie. I may not like the way Peter was treated, but the voice was interesting to say the least. It sounds like what a Cybertronian would sound like on another world, instead of their home world. But this is just my opinion.

Just rewatched the scenes were optimus speaks. On the surface it sounds like Prime, but It amazes me how much off it truely is. It truely is the difference between what gives a character the soul and the weight, and in teh way Peter critisizes his colleague, it truely shows the mastery he has in his craft, an the deep understanding of what makes this character. The tempo is off, Primes slower way of talking gives him both more strength and seriousness. Amazing how a voice can enhance the charactertraits.
