Peter Cullen (ft. Frank Welker) - Lifetime Achievement Award - Children’s and Family Emmys 2023

Peter Cullen was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to film and television at the 2nd Annual Children's and Family Emmys on the 17th December 2023. It took place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. Frank Welker was the one to present it to him, just like how Peter presented him with the same award in 2016 which, unlike this ceremony, was not televised or broadcast online.

Other actors have been great at that favorite Cybertronian hero in their own way, but when I think of Optimus Prime, it will always be the great Peter Cullen's voice that embodies Prime for me. The same is true of his longtime pal Frank Welker when I think of that malevolent arch rival Megatron. You two greats have shaped many childhoods back during the time of the original show of the franchise, including mine. Thank you both for the wonderful memories growing up. From Mighty Man and Yukk to the various versions of Scooby Doo back then (Mr Welker) to Winnie the Pooh (Mr Cullen) to Dunjeons and Dragons (Mr Cullen) to the Smurfs to of course The Transformers. You both are truly masters. Congrats Mr Peter Cullen on gaining this honor for your dedication in entertaining generations of kids all these years.

What made him so great as the voice of Optimus Prime, was that he took his brother's words to heart. He didn't treat it as just a character from a kids cartoon, he treated it with real gravitas and humbleness, and that's what made Optimus Prime great. You could hear the hero in his voice every time he did it, the weariness of the world yet the hope that kept him going. Honestly he should've received this award a long time ago, but better late than posthumously. First he got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame now he finally got his Lifetime Achievement Award. I just know that every time he did that voice, Larry would be looking down on him from heaven and smiling.

I grew up listening to them on Transformers. I remember a classmate that came to school after watching The Transformers Movie and he was crying that Optimus died (I won't name names even after this long lol). We thought he was joking but nope! And then I was there at Anime Expo 2007, Long Beach CA. We got to see the first live action Transformers Movie a few days early. The crowd went nuts when Optimus showed up and spoke his first lines. This man was a part of many of our childhoods and this honor is just a smidgen of the recognition he definitely deserves.

I hate to say it, but that’s the wrong crowd, had it been a crowd of kids and young adults brought up with transformers from the 80’s or from the early 2000’s the cheers and screams would never end.
