Peter is a musician. He plays the drums. He doesn't beat them. The drums are a musical instrument.

Not musical at all. Drums are percussive ( Latin , meaning to hit ) they essentially keep the tempo , I play drums . They are important !

Can you play , “ Oh danny boy” on the drums ? ( nyet, nicts nada no)
@NathanFiorentino
@NathanFiorentino 3 жыл бұрын
@@stephenkavanagh3560 "Melodic" and "musical" are not synonyms. Also you're ignoring centuries of musical repertoire in which percussion doesn't serve solely (or sometimes at all) as time keeping, i.e. classical percussion. Not that keeping tempo makes an instrument unmusical anyways.

Stanislaw Rybinski ugh yeah just the orchestration and where he starts the groupings makes the brain have to work to retain the original pulse- especially where he ends the triplet phrase and transitions back into more of the 16th swung feel... probably just watched that part 20 times!

Peter Erskine is a fantastic all-around drummer. This cat played with Stan Kenton and swung like mad. He can also underplay, and play straight grooves and just accompany-- when it calls for that. Here he lays it down and plays musical, funky grooves. That... to me... is a GREAT drummer!

I always love seeing these tall muscular hard rock drummers that think that they are complete badasses behind the drumset :D this proves again how Peter Erskine who looks like a regular old man can actually blow these posers right out of the water. Erskine is one of my favorite jazz/ funk drummers. Most jazz drummers just do crazy fills around the kit and seldomly have any groove. Erskine can play subtle and have crazy groove and he has amazing groovy drum solos! Just an amazing drummer.

This is not about whether you or I have skills. What I am saying is that Peter is not nearly as good or inspiring as others. And anyone who thinks he is, probably needs lessons.
@brettcattell

playing music isn't about blowing everyones mind with your capabilities on your chosen instrument. It's about playing for the music as a whole. You don't get to play on 600+ albums and film scores if you're no good. Yes there are guys out there that can put more notes into the same about of space and if thats what your into then great. There are guys that can play rhythms so complex you lose when the beat is but they know exactly where it is. again, if thats what your into then great. The best bit of advise I ever received for playing music was "Play what you want to hear". Peter throughout his career has played music the way he wanted to hear it and has enjoyed doing it. I personally don't think you can knock somebody who has made a successful career at anything especially if it's doing something they love. And as for your 'he is massively overrated by some very rhythmically challenged people.' remark. Peter's genre of choice is Jazz. One of the more complex genres out there. Winning a grammy in that category. Along with being Modern Drummers Jazz drummer of the year 10 times plus being inducted into their hall of fame. And as for your comment on people 'probably need lessons', Music isn't something anyone can truly master. Everyone will spend there lives constantly learning and anyone who says otherwise must be pretty ignorant to the art form. People play in different ways. Everyone has their own spin they would put on a piece of music. If everyone had the same vision of how music should sound there wouldn't be very music of it out there. Not everyone can be inspired by everything and if this doesn't inspire you that's fine by me. But there is no denying Peter Erskine is one of the modern greats. Live life with and open mind. Take care, Peace.
