Wonderful vocal performance by Peter Gabriel. He has made this song a monument by remaining dedicated to it and its message for all his years of live performance. He still leaves audiences with it now, and he always leaves audiences with the message "What happens next is up to you" and he is right, and he is blessed for doing it............God bless Peter Gabriel.

I went to the Amnesty Concert when I was a teenager in Denver. Of the 10 people who attended the show from my small, up scale ski town, 5 of us went on to study and travel abroad and 3 continued on to careers in non-profit organizations. I'm still an Amnesty member to this day. I remember the concert, and PG, so vividly. We were there for the music, we had no idea who Biko was and we certainly didn't have a grip on what apartheid meant. This concert was such an eye opener to the bigger world and all of its adversities. Thank you PG et all for the education via music.

+Kreston Rohrig Yes, it is such a moving song. Glad you discovered the story, same way as I did about 30 years ago, via this song.

People have no idea of how big of a political issue this was back in the 80's, brought to the forefront by PG singing of this at the Amnesty International Conspiracy of Hope tour which was shown on MTV. I was attending the University of Florida at the time and we started protesting against the University for doing business with South Africa. Not long afterwards the University divested all of its holdings and ceased all business with South Africa. Soon afterwards, South Africa capitulated and Nelson Mandela became the man of the hour, all due in part to Peter Gabriel's Biko.

+jaxbus3000 Gabriel said many years ago in a book of conversations about Genesis and his careers, "Ideas change the world." He can be proud because his ideas did something towards changing the world.

jaxbus...thanks for sharing your story about what happened at your university. Peter Gabriel has a heart of gold and I could only see him doing this song for Biko. No one else could have impacted the world more than Peter's gift and using it to bring about change. I'm so sorry what happened in SA to all those people imprisoned. I wasn't to hep on world issues myself. I had only heard the word 'Apartheid' in the news growing up but didn't pay much attention to what it meant or what actually happened and where. It's been only recently that I'm discovering Biko and his story. I watched the movie but it was my love for music and watching some old music videos of PG that I found Biko. I'm glad you had a part in enacting this crucial change. Thankyou!

So true. Mandela so well known, but he lived until his 90s. Biko suffered so greatly and not really given enough credit for his amazing work.

I would love to know how PG felt when apartheid finally ended after singing this 'Biko' to all us white folks all those years…even amid the endless struggle for human dignity for all, there has to have been a moment of satisfaction, to pause and take a breath and behold what has been accomplished…I wonder what was going on inside this amazing visionary genius the moment he heard…

Logically you could ask, if the assailants knew that their victim had an impacted neurotrauma would they have shown mercy? It is an illogical question born to torment the mind even further, because the murderers had impacted the injury in order to target it for the deepest humiliation, and for nothing would they stop.
