It's basically about a man who has lost his job. Unemployment was rife in the UK in the eighties. Whole communities afflicted with factory closures, and many communities bereft of hope. Many men committed suicide because they couldn't handle the failure. They feel they should be the bread winner, and the one who provides. Take that away from them, and they feel helpless and worthless. The line where he is standing on that bridge looking down at the river is about him contemplating suicide. Kate is singing as his concerned wife, who is trying to tell him there is plenty still to live for.

The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under Margaret Thatcher.[1] He composed lyrics within a situation about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement. Gabriel originally wrote the song from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place.[2]

Accordig to songfacts.com it also stemmed from the following; -- Jill Gabriel, who was Peter's wife at the time, told Songfacts: "I saw an article in a newspaper about a woman who jumped out of a huge block of flats with her child and killed herself. I gave it to Peter and it was the original inspiration and he was heartbroken to read it. However his lyrics are always multilayered with many different influences."

LOVE Kate Bush, discovered by David Gilmour (of Pink Floyd) when she was 16 and introduced to American audiences on Saturday Night Live when Eric Idle hosted in 1978, and I've been a fan ever since. She's truly amazing, and huge in Europe, especially Britain, though not so well known in America, since she hates flying. Kate has a 4 octave vocal range. Peter Gabriel was one of the founders of Genesis who left the band at their creative height and never looked back, doing amazing solo work, and some of the most imaginative videos ever seen, but his music has never stopped evolving. Great song with two amazing artists, thank your for featuring this.
