I remember listening to this for the first time as a teen when it had just come out on MTV, it made me cry and back then I didn't even speak English. One day, 15 years later, I hear it again. By then I have finished a degree in English and I am married to an anglophone, living in an English speaking country...and I am driving, the song comes on, I understand each word and I have to park the car. That's how much it moved me. Brilliant choice, thank you!

At the time this song was released, I remember it related to the shutdown of the mining industry in England by the Thatcher government and the terrible impact it had on the miners and families. Kelly, I love that you found Kate. Her song, Cloudbusting, is my favourite song of songs. I studied (Jazz) singing 20+ years ago and sang some of her songs in my exams: Babooshka (we made a swing version of it), and The Wedding List. She wrote songs like "The man with the child in his eyes" when she was in her mid-teens. She also did dance, hence her own, expressive and somewhat eccentric choreographies in her videos of, for example, Wuthering Heights. I "fell" for Donald Sutherland (the white haired president actor in The Hunger Games) watching the Cloudbusting video. My sister had her 1985 album "Hounds of Love", which I, as an 11 year old girl, listened to on cassette tape for hours and hours, just turning the tape over when one side was finished, again and again. Kate is for me very well illustrated on her Never Forever album cover (oh, those decades of proper album cover ART!). Go, have a look. And listen....

So happy that you have found out about the genius that's Kate Bush, I'm sure that you will have a wonderful time listening to her albums. She started writing songs from when she was 12 years ago, "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" was written when she was 13, which is just crazy. She was a trailblazer for women artists in so many ways in the UK her very first single Wuthering Heights went to number 1, it was first time ever that a song written by a female singer had ever done that! As for me I was there from the start, my advantage being I live in the UK and in the same part of the country where she grew up - showing my age now 😀😀 - unfortunately I missed her first live tour but I was extremely lucky to get a ticket to one of her "Before The Dawn" series of concerts in 2015, when she performed live again. It was a fantastic experience and I'm sure that you will have a fantastic time listening to her.

"So" was possibly the best album of the 80's, and certainly one of the most musically significant. Peter's voice is incredible: no other qualifiers needed. Kate too. I saw him on this tour in my favorite venue, Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD, and it's still one of the top three shows I've ever seen. On the song "In Your Eyes" (also from So) he has the famous Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour and his band join him, and for the concert they were the opening act, but also came on stage for the encore and the combined bands played an hour long encore! Peter also did his crowd-surfing act during "Lay Your Hands on Me" (that must give his security guys nightmares). Please do more from this album! My favorite is "Red Rain" but the big hit bangers were "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer". "Mercy Street" is another beautiful ballad. Thanks for listening and sharing! Peace from SF

The song was _inspired_ by the US Depression, in particular the photographs of Dorothea Lange. It had particular resonance when released as Britain was experiencing high unemployment in the restructuring of the post-industrial economy. So yes and no as to the underlying meaning; the disruptive effects on people and relationships was certainly relevant to the times but the direct inspiration was drawn from a different period.

I went with my sister and her husband because I love Sting's music, but by the time the concert was over, I was a huge Peter Gabriel fan. He was so amazing throughout the evening, just his unique voice and haunting music and it was all so moving. By the time they did "In Your Eyes," I was crying, it was so beautiful. Gave me chills. This song has become an anthem for guys separated from their wives during jail time but it was written about high levels of unemployment in the UK. Peter Gabriel has stated in interviews that he didn't have guys doing jail time thinking about their wives in mind when he wrote it. His ex-wife stated at the time the song was released that the video upset her because she and Peter were getting divorced at the time too. There's always been speculation when people saw all that hugging that Peter and Kate were more than good friends.

Goddam song made me cry. I've gone through all manner of mental health issues down the years and now at just 51, I can hardly walk anymore after years of doing sports, soccer at a high level, and then sang in bands down the years and one by one they've been taken away from me by my spine which is giving up on me and I've had to retire from working, sport, music, everything. With everything I've had to stop it's like another hammer to my head, another nail in my coffin. I've started to even hide from my family, and stay in my bedroom away from everybody. This song, and Coldplay "Fix You" both are songs I gage my mental health at that time to see how I am in myself. The quicker I break down, the worse I know I am. Thank you for reviewing songs. I know them all as I'm getting old lol, but still some I've not heard in a long time. Coldplay FIX YOU. If you've not reviewed it, do it. I'm trying to think of one you might not have reviewed yet but you've done ALOT now so it's hard to think of one. Please stop doing tearjerkers as they aren't good for me lol. Ok, I know one to review for you. Glasvegas "Daddy's Gone". Because they are Scottish you may find it tough to understand some lyrics so either get them up or find it with lyrics. My Father left when I was 3 and It's one all children, especially boys will relate to about Father's who've abandoned them. Either that one of Queensryche "Bridge". Same subject.

Thank you Jay for playing this song. My all time favorite since the 80s. The message is so important. My favorite part is when Kate Bush comes in with the words "rest your head... you worry too much..." she comes in with this part at the peak of the eclipse. The eclipse adds that extra dramatic effect. I love that part. It's a if she says it directly to us telling us we worry too much. Which is so true. Don't give up... Two of the most original and greatest british singers of all time. They both also have so much integrity and create their own music from scratch. They never follwed trends just stuck to their own thing. They are the pioneers in music that others follow.

Its one of the most beautiful songs ever made ❤ It gives you an incredible longing after something or someone thats missing in your life - something indescribable... his rusty voice makes you get goosebumps all over. Every Word he sings, hits you like a hammer, deep in your heart ❤ ....And the fantastic voice of Kate - voice of an Angel ⚘

Can't believe I'm tearing up!! Hard week emotionally and this is such a GEM of a song to hear. This came out when Britain was facing the worst unemployment numbers in the 80's. I read somewhere that Peter Gabriel LOVED doing this video spending all day in Kate's arms as they were taping this LOL!!!!!

Yes, they are good friends. Peter appeared on Kate's Christmas TV special in 1979 where they performed a duet of the Roy Harper song "Another Day" and Peter sang a solo (with keyboard) of "Here Comes The Flood." Peter also made an appearance at one of Kate's shows during her 1978 tour - a special benefit concert for the family of Kate's lighting director, Bill Duffield, who died from a stage fall.

Just this time i realized that there is a sun eclipse in the background, it's covers the sun at the most depressing point of the song and then goes back to full sunlight again when the song ends.

This was a song I played for my boyfriend a lot. He was very sick with liver disease and Parkinson's. We had this kind of relationship. We clung to each other. Hugs were everything to us. Alan passed away 11/7 at 3:10am. I was holding his hand, telling him how much I love him. One second here. One second gone. Thank you for this reaction. It was the first time I've listened to this song since his passing. ♥️

Peter and Kate have been great friends since the late 1970's and it was Peter that introduced Kate to the Fairlight computer syntheseizer that helped change her music so much from 1980 onwards. Apart from being close friends, they also had great admiration for each others musical direction and individuality and it's no accident they released 2 of the best and biggest albums of the 80's with 'So' and the 'Hounds of love'. Kate truly is a genius!

It moved me to tears, I really felt Kate’s voice in my heart. Thank you Jay for being such an open hearted, open minded listener! I just watched your reactions on Don't Give Up and Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. I think the music going through you is like going through a 'Pure Filter'. You don't know the timeline of the Beatles members or how an orchestra works, but your reactions are as pure as when I first heard those music and you have the talent to speak out, to give words to your experience. And that makes that music all new for me again. Thanks!

Yo Jay outside of Gabriel’s hits such as “in your eyes” “Solsbury Hill”“games without frontiers” “big time” you should check out his track “I grieve” from the City of Angels soundtrack is a really deep song that has an amazing breakdown featuring his vocals similar to this tune. I think you would really dig “I Grieve”. You can feel Peters grieving in it..,,one of those songs that slow and builds and is amazing truly every Peter Gabriel fan needs to hear that song.
