I agree that this album is killer Ryan... Those two songs youre still gonna do are also both great!! Glad you did Games and No Self Control though, they're my faves. It's great that you're enjoying it so much! Peter and Genesis are starting to sound very different from each other at this point huh, both awesome in their own ways. Looking forward to your listens to Phil's early solo stuff too.

Peter Gabriel's goosestepping isn't quite the same without him being dressed up as a giant flower.

Glad you're proceeding with the Gabriel tracks . Hoping soon you'll get to the anthemic Biko - its beautifully haunting and powerful and an absolute staple at Peter's shows .

Dunno if you're already aware of it as I did not read all the comments on the previous songs. Peter experimented music without cymbals and hi-hat on this album and the following one. He said at that time cymbals conditionned the music a way he did not want thus he uses electronics to replace them (synth and Fairlight CMI). I find his choice pretty clever as the drums and percussions get thicker. It was at that time, due to a mishap, Phil found this particular drum sound without reverb which will be the 80's sound trademark.

On the next album (Security), you have to listen to ''Lay Your Hands on Me'' using the live version of this concert (Athen) . In the philosophy of your channel (doubling studio and live version), this is probably the most intense part of the live performance. Believe me! Enjoy!

Thank you. Thank you very much. This is one of my all time favorites. And one of the few I Love to listen in his german version. "Spiel ohne Grenzen", "Keine Selbstkontrolle" and "BIKO" from this record. And of course "Familien Schnappschuss".

Good choices for the remaining songs. If you end up doing any from his next, "San Jacinto" is a must.

This live version slaps so hard. One of Peter's most underrated talents is his ability to draw together such amazing musicians in one place in time.

For Christmas 1981 at age 16 I got my wish for a boombox with cassette player - finally an upgrade from the FM radio I had for years. I was also allowed to pick one cassette and because I liked this song Game Without Frontiers from radio play that first cassette was PG 3rd album / Melt. Shortly after, with birthday money I bought my second cassette based on another song I had been hearing on the radio called Abacab from a group named Genesis. At least that cassette was easier to purchase / find as it had the name ABACAB! Because of limited funds I played the hell out of those tapes until buying my third and was very easy to do so as I genuinely liked all but one track from both albums. Who Dunnitt being the exception. While a friend was over, he noticed that I had only two cassettes and he informed me that Peter Gabriel was once in Genesis to which I thought he was joking. I had no idea. I was so wet behind the ears in music knowledge and a child of the disco era. What are the odds that my musical taste had evolved to picking as for my first two music purchases these two cassettes! With money from a weekend and summers job I started buying the back catalogue of both Peter Gabriel and Genesis with my third cassette being the double The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. A year or two later with the releases of PGs 4th album Security and Genesis' self titled album Genesis, I got to see my band(s) pick it up a notch with hit songs Shock the Monkey and Mama. Then in 1986 of course the zenith of PGs So and Genesis' Invisible Touch. Then finishing out the 80s was PG's Us and Genesis' We Can't Dance. What an awesome time to be alive back in the 80s looking forward to each new release. Yes, I understand the disdain for Genesis' leaning towards pop. I was so fortunate to have had the ability to purchase the back catalogue as the pop years took hold. Because of being alive for those pop years they really do not bother me. For me, if I had to choose four consecutive Genesis albums in a row that had to bring with me on an extended space journey or to be left on an island, they would be TotT / WaW / ATTWT / Duke which makes this period the era right before that Abacab cassette. The four consecutive PG albums would be Melt / Security / So / Us which is where I first started with PG.

Ryan, hi. Really enjoying your PG journey. There are many live versions of Biko you can find but my own personal favourite is from the Secret Policeman's Third Ball - a benefit show for Amnesty International. Peter is joined by Lou Reed, Jackson Browne and Youssou N'Dour, but despite that it's quite an intimate performance and so much the better for it. All the best, Vincent.

Jeux sans frontières was a Europe-wide television game show, based on the French programme Intervilles which was first broadcast in 1962 and in the UK on BBC was known as It's a Knockout. (Wiki) Fantastic basis for a great song!! The Athens concert is a brilliant DVD and contains excellent versions of both Biko and I don't remember.
@swirll3603 жыл бұрын
Ryan, if you want to I strongly suggest the video to "I don't remember" I don't care if it's here on or your own... When you watch it remember what year it is. This is before Tool videos which share some elements in this video, at least when I saw my first tool video it reminded me of PG and this particular video. Also, Robert Fripp is the founder of King Crimson and their first album is my Patreon request for this month. I hope that request doesn't throw your listening off. If it does I'm fine with suggesting a different album for you to listen to.

I would love it if Ryan went on a King Crimson journey like he has for Genesis, but sadly most channels are not able to play King Crimson songs because the videos get blocked... :/

In an interview in the late 70s, Gabriel said he thought of his solo albums as another edition of a magazine - a familiar logo in one corner, and a new picture for each edition. The first four didn't have any titles until recently when the mainstream couldn't cope without a name. Is it a coincidence that the first album to have a title, "So" was also the first to be way more commercial to appeal to a greater audience. I wonder if it was Gabriel's choice or the record company's? Seeing him live on the So tour it was obvious that most of the audience had only come to hear Big Time and Sledgehammer.

There’s a Kate Bush Christmas special on KZbin from back in the day. Peter appears and sings a heartbreaking song with her. You need to seek it out.

It is called “Don’t give up”. It is his song, she is accompanying on vocals and promo video. Stunning stunning record. His vocals the best on any of his records. Absolutely stunning writing and song.
@warrenbridges1891 Жыл бұрын
@@De5O54 I think she's referring to Pete and Kate's performance of "Another Day", which I think is a Roy Harper tune. Don't remember "Don't Give Up" being performed on the "Christmas Special". Peter's other performance on the special was "Here Comes The Flood"

I think the vinyl version of this ended with the groove going to the label with music and playing forever. Lol. The melt album has no cymbals.

First example of that (vinyl record with endless fade out) I know of is Seventy-Five by Touch on their album Touch, released in early 1969. Search for it. Seventy-five by Touch.

I'm not fond of this one, too repetitive. The message is strong, but the song is not very strong. I can't wait you to hear Biko, which is the peak of the album IMO.

I found his dancing rather embarrassing. His later concerts were superb. Listen to Wallflower or Family Snapshot, you are then listening to truly great music.
