I always found it funny how people blame Phil Collins for Genesis going pop when Peter Gabriel, Steve Hackett,Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks all dabbled in pop for thier solo carrers around the same time. Sususdio and Invisible Touch were inevitable with or without Phil.

@ProgSnob14

Dabbling with Pop in prog isn't unthinkable, Prog shouldn't be stale, kinda the whole concept of prog is to be progressive with your sound. I'd still argue Genesis did more prog with Phil at the front, definitely went full pop in the late 80s and 90s though.

Randy Newman influences for sure. Also think there’s a Paul Simon connection in a few tracks as well. Not a surprise after the “Scratch my back” campaign. Nice review as always my man. Always entertaining

I was wondering if anyone else would catch the Randy Newman vibe of "Playing for Time." Also, good catch on Peter's voice here. I think he sounds way better on i/o than he did on Up. Guessing it's all the touring he's been doing lately if these are recent vocal recordings. Compare that to 8 years of relative inactivity before Up. Only listened to the Bright-Side Mix, so I can't speak to the differences between them, but the weird bit about this album is that there aren't any bad songs and I wouldn't say it lacks flow, but it feels like a compilation rather than a proper album. Not sure why, but it lacks the kind of through-line that most of his albums have. Not sure if that's the songs, the sequencing, or what. And I avoided the individual song releases so I could just hear the album as a whole. To your point about the orchestral albums feeding into this, one vibe I got was that some songs really felt like he was writing "in the style of" someone else. "Playing for Time" is pretty obvious, but i/o has a strong Paul Simon vibe in the verses and I'm blanking on which song, but one of them gave me really strong Cat Stevens vibes. In some ways, it feels like another covers album at certain points - good covers, but not PG. Might just be me though. I suspect the album will be a grower though. The songs are too good for it not to be.

i was just surprised such an older fellow who stays away from pop culture can still bust out some some memorable hooks that sound so modern.. i would have to agree this album is better than Up, that record was just such a downer
@Runicen
@Runicen Жыл бұрын
@@DancingwithGhosts I don't know if I could rank PG albums (the order would constantly change). I remember Up being kind of underwhelming at first and then growing on me. It's a "mood" record, but so is "Melt" at the end of the day. Good point though. There are some irresistible hooks here. The tech and styles will change, but songcraft is kind of a timeless thing. Maybe he just tapped into that.

Coming back to this video because I have a surprising find with the album. Listened to the "Bright-Side" mix of the album a bunch of times to get familiar with it before moving to the "Dark-Side" mix. The Bright-Side mix is phenomenal as a "singles" mix, but it doesn't flow well as an album. What I mean is the songs are all ornamented to the nines, but there's no sonic through line to the album. It feels like a compilation. Flip to the Dark-Side and the mix pulls a lot of the decorative stuff out and gives each song a similar sonic palette. The up songs still sound "up" and the more morose stuff still sounds morose - it doesn't force one mood on the album, but it feels more like a solid platter. Give me another few weeks to figure out WHY that's happening in these two mixes, but that's the overall effect I've found from both - so it's definitely a noticeable difference.

I've been a fan of this gentleman since buying PG3 in 1980 when I was 14, hearing GWF for the first time was astonishing, I can't tell you how advanced it sounded back then. That he's still making music this good all these years later is gratifying, as is the fact that his sounds are appealing to young guys like you. You've got good taste in music young man - REM, Floyd, Genesis - some of my favourites. Am I just an old grouchy fuck, is their great music out there these days? I don't hear anything that appeals, maybe its just being nearly 60!

@DancingwithGhosts Yeah I have seen it happen since you got recommended on the first Rex Viper live review. The vid after that lost all viral traction. It's the curse of using online media. Will you pursue the algorithm-game and whore yourself out. (Plus-side: better numbers) Or are you gonna do what you are clearly passionate about doing? Numbers be damned? As a viewer I like it better if the guy I am watching is really into the thing he's talking about :) I think you're more fun in this field. But that's me. I also observed channels getting big after reviewing Doug Walker's interpretation/review of Pink Floyd's The Wall. If you wanna talk shitload of fucks. 🤣

@JosephBlack Жыл бұрын
@DancingwithGhosts yeah now it's very after the fact. And trust me you would hate Doug's pitchy singing voice in this one. And it's studio produced. No excuses! And he interprets The Wall as a very black & white art piece. Not really understanding the significance in the time it came out. If he called it dated, I would agree. But he analyses it as if it was something of the 2010s. And God the songs were bad jokes and very poorly executed. Save your ears :) listen to good music 🤣 Maybe a next music project by someone that is at least relevant to talk about. Good or bad :)

I liked most of the album, really enjoyed the tour. Thought the moon cycle release schedule was stupid and took too long, but he's an artsy kinda guy. Transatlantic released multiple versions of their last album, it was a bit gimmicky but I noticed the differences, Peter Gabriel's dark side and bright side felt/sounded the same.

Can you please do a review video on why you don’t like Disgging in the Dirt by Peter Gabriel?
@DancingwithGhosts
@DancingwithGhosts Жыл бұрын
i mean i can just tell you right now why i dont like it and save myself having to make whole video about it. The verses musically are just a generic soft blues groove with a boring talk\sing vocal melody to match. The pre-chorus melody is really weak to me "THIS TIME, YOU GONE TOO FAR" and then bringing it back down in the chorus ''digging in the dirt, find the places we've been hurt''.. and lyrically i don't agree with the sentiment (even though if the song had been bad-ass this wouldn't have been an issue). I think therapy is very helpful... it's almost Scientology-like to be so anti-therapy. But yeah, the song is just bland to me overall.
