He's a creative genius. I've been revisiting the early Genesis albums of late and I can't overstate how brilliant they are.

Same here. I love his solo recordings, but until recently I never ‘got’ the earlier stuff. Love it now. 50-plus years late!

I agree, he is very much a creative genius.

Some background on what this interview is about. Gabriel had left Genesis two albums ago. He was signed by Atco, and his first album had the hit 'Solsberry Hill' on it. All three of Gabriel's first four albums were named: 'Peter Gabriel', not 'Peter Gabriel 1' or 2 or 3 or 4. The labels hated it since fans couldn't ask for a specific album by name. Atco wanted to be progressive, but in truth, they weren't. Their only real progressive artist was Roxy Music, who was really an Island Record band that released under ATCO in the US. This brings us to the interview in 1980. Gabriel had just lost his contract with WEA (Warner, Elektra, Asylum) who also owned ATCO, due to the progressive nature of the 3rd album, sometimes called informally: 'Melt.' Gabriel shopped it around, and Mercury released it on their label. It had two really strong AOR (album oriented rock) semi-radio hits with 'Games Without Frontiers' and 'Biko' about a South African social anti-apartheid Black activist who was murdered. In a touch of irony, Mercury also fired Gabriel the next year, and Geffen, a WEA subsidiary picked up Peter's next album which was also called 'Peter Gabriel' (4) with the huge hit and video: 'Shock the Monkey.'

I’m 64, I listen to his music from the 80s walking on my treadmill. He’s an Icon in my eyes.

Gabriel really seems like one of the nicest people in rock music. Very soft spoken, down to earth, modest.

@@pureenergy5136 I read a story about him but haven’t been able to prove if it’s true… someone on a plane recognized him and passed a note written on a napkin..”what’s a god like you doing in a place like this?”…..I can only hope that it happened but my gut says it did😁

In October 2004 I saw a Genesis tribute band in my area named "Musical Box" (from Montreal, Canada). They were fantastic and tickets were only $20.00 and they played at the Royal Oak Theatre, which was designed for the arts so the sound was perfect. They played the 1974 tour of "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". The musician's were mind-blowing fantastic; the lead-singer sang and looked like Gabriel, and the other musicians also looked like their counter-parts. From what I understand, the background screen slides being shown during the show were from the actual 1974 Genesis tour and they also got to be in the studio to learn from the original 16 track tapes. My lifelong buddy and my ex were with me. She was "so-so" about the music, but coincidentally one month later, I took her to see Phil Collins which was her fav at the time. It was fun for her to see the band, what the drummer did, and then see Phil. Of course she liked Phil much better which is understandable. Genesis is more a guy's band. Later in 2005 I read that Collins played the drums with "Musical Box" at one of their concerts in Paris. So it was a dream come true to see these guys, because I would never have had the chance to see the original band.

Peter Gabriel n'a rien changé dans sa façon d'être, ni d'être l'Artiste qu'il sera... Aujourd'hui, c'est le Maître dans la musique !

One of the truly seminal early-'80s albums. Pointed the way forward for an inestimable amount of what was to come. And maybe the first fully realized album by someone else to elaborate compellingly on what David Bowie was on about, musically, just a couple of years earlier. (The Walker Brothers' Nite Flights only made it halfway, IMO)

"The thing itself, because of its success, was becoming a little more conservative, you know..." Yes, the Lamb lies Down on Broadway has always been considered one of the most conservative albums in rock. Pause for laughter at that🤣😂🤣. I've not seen this interview before, so thanks for reminding me of so many untenable contradictions that Peter was capable of spouting at this time, and keeping a straight face whilst doing so, just to maintain some degree of 'rock star enigma', which he and many others thought essential for the success of their careers. Some of Peter's videos were cutting edge, but when I look at many of the live performances, they're choreographed with so many 'boy band' like dance moves, I simply can't watch them. Contrast that with the 'foxes head', or the 'old man mask' that he often wore in Genesis, when he sang fantastic stories in such songs as The Musical Box, that moved rock music forward so 'dramatically', compared to what came later in his solo career. Peter's solo 'pop career' was all about his own 'mega success', which being the clever chap he is, he mapped out for himself.......

I love how reality proved the A&R and label execs to be mindless jackals... It was a brilliant and brave album. He's a trailblazing artist. The industry only wants controllable propagandistas that make muzak to support the official narratives.

You can really sense how saddened he turned when ask why he left Genesis when he also knows deep inside he was slowly being forced out just like Hackett felt to democratic
