Very nice cover. I had to learn this for my band and was tortured between playing it the way you do, or with an octaver. (played an octave higher of course) I decided to go with the octaver as I had the impression it sounded better...but your version will put me again in that dilemna...
@KeithLewisMusic10 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah, I like to use as little gear as possible when I'm playing, so I typically run my bass straight into my amp. It keeps things simple, but it means that there are some sounds that are outside of my ability to make. I feel like the line is just as effective without the higher octave, but it's a personal thing. Just go with what sounds and feels right to you.

@KeithLewisMusic4 жыл бұрын
Oof. This is going back 6 years, so my memory is pretty shaky on the settings, but it's not much. Just my Musicman Bongo going into my TC Electronic RH450 head, which applies some light compression and what sounds like a slight mid boost. I think I was using an Alesis Multimix 16 as a converter then. Then probably a little more compression and EQ in the mix. That's about it. The Bongo sounds pretty amazing without a lot of help.
@leewilliams.3804 жыл бұрын

Awesome. By any chance do you know a link to a tab? Everything I've found is for 4 string bass.
@KeithLewisMusic7 жыл бұрын
The part was originally written to be played like the 4 string tabs you've found, with an octave pedal on it. I shot this before putting together a pedal board, and I did the transcription by ear, so I play the lower octave that is technically being performed by the pedal Tony Levin used on the recording. Just take the 4 string parts you've found, and move all the notes down to strings and down two frets, and you're good to go.
@travismiller9027 Жыл бұрын
Timeless groove! Hey I'm just curious about the 6 strings, I've played 4 then went to 5 then both which was really hard, then I just lost my spacing for 5 so back to 4. So are you a guitarist too? And did go straight to 6? And can someone tell me how not to play so hard, I'm on year 6 and I have to ice my fret fingers almost every time, I don't practice 14 hrs a day anymore, my action is very low, tried strings of all sorts, my best so far were Ernie Ball half round and I was told that was the cause. Because you look so smooth it doesn't even look like you are playing! I just played this song a few days ago, well tried to when I watch you 👍
@KeithLewisMusic Жыл бұрын
Hey! While I do play guitar as well, I am definitely a bassist first, and I bought my first six string bass long before I picked up guitar. I started on four strings, but I switched to six strings for a few reasons. I could read sheet music, so I was being asked to play a lot of gigs that involved reading, but being new to bass meant that I wasn't very good at moving up and down the neck, and the six string allowed me to play more notes in one position without having to take my eyes off the music to look at my hands. I also got involved in some instrumental trios where playing chords was very helpful to fill out the sound, and the thinner gauge of the C string helps to keep the tone from getting muddy with more notes. I also just came to like the feel of a wide neck and the narrower string spacing over time. I still play a four string in some contexts, but I mostly play my sixes these days. As for the left hand stress, without being able to see you play, it's hard to comment, but if your action is already nice and low, I'd guess that you are just gripping much harder than you need to. Make sure that your thumb is behind the neck, with the pad roughly opposite where your first finger is. Your palm should be nice and low, and not touching the neck. Try to keep your fingers parallel to the frets, and press the strings with the tip, not the pad of your fingers. Do your best to keep your fingers in a fairly relaxed curve, and don't let any joints invert when you press down. That's the best general advice I can give without actually look at your technique.

Hahahaha! I do not even come close to Tony Levin's utter mastery of the bass, but thank you!
@jambandbillyd7 жыл бұрын
That's really smooth. It sounds great. I'm guessing you tuned down a half step, so your open E string was really playing a Eb, open A was Ab, etc. Songs with horns are usually in a flat key, and when I tune A to 440Hz I end up playing in Eb for this song. Tuning down works out great playing by yourself with the recording. I wonder how it would go with a live band gig with 2-3 sets of music. Would you have to tune down a half step to play this one, then back up after the song? Or have another bass tuned down a half step and do a switch? I wonder if the bass on the original recording was tuned down a half step? Anyway, nice playing.
@KeithLewisMusic7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was tuned down a half step for this video. Most of the groups I play with these days play down a half step, so this bass pretty much lives in Eb standard. I think Tony Levin also tunes down for this song as well judging by the videos of him playing it. I hate changing tuning live, so if I had to do this with a band where the rest of the set needed standard tuning, I would probably learn it in Eb. That's part of the reason I started playing extended range basses: so I don't have to retune when people want to use different tunings.
