Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel

Күн бұрын

The official Steam video. Directed by Stephen R. Johnson.
The second single from Peter's sixth album, US, was released in 1993.
The album US continued the now well-established Gabriel motif of mixing high technology with decidedly analogue contributions from musicians from West Africa, Egypt and Armenia. Reunited with Daniel Lanois as co-producer, Peter extends the hand of collaboration to Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, Brian Eno, Peter Hammill and Sinead O’Connor.

This one didn't age nearly as well as "sledgehammer." The 80s were the absolutely refinement of the old film techniques in the last decade we were willing to pay for such things: Animation, animatronics, stop motion animation, claymation, etc. Though computer animation had been around for a while, it started to really be exploited in the late 80s early 90s. I remember when this music video looked state of the art but now it looks like silly by today's standards. It's a good case study to show someone the difference between a well executed concept and a showcase. Still better than I could do but interesting to see the difference.

+Mihály Kobela Quite So...! but it's like how you have to put your mind set for watching a silent film. In the mid-80s, there were no cellphones, no laptops, hardly any desktops, the MacPlus & SE had no programs to run on it, there were barely any graphical interfaces, and Windows hadn't even been dreamt up yet! No internet! no, and video games were like Pacman... no www... the $$$$ they spent on making this? was phenomenal. It was so ground breaking at the time. The dancing fire and ice figures, even the decomposing singing head, was trippy and fresh then. It's hard to imagine such a world now, isn't it? But the song has funk and it's still fun.
@tangogrrl
@tangogrrl 8 жыл бұрын
+Replayability It does, because instead of using stop animation, they used very much in its infancy Computer Graphics. It was sooo new. And very expensive. No one knew what to use it for yet, so it was for playing around with effects at that time. No video games were 3D. And the internet was not yet invented, well, not for the laypersons like us. It was still a military thing.

Nothing like a veteran prog musician blowing down doors in the 'new' MTV era back in the day. Peter Gabriel was a master of the video art form, and it doesn't hurt at all that the music is amazing. Can anyone say Tony Levin? I would encourage everyone to watch "Secret World Live" to see that this music is even stronger without the dazzling video-- and Gabriel even goes as far as to give the audience a NEW visual experience live. This man is a genius.

I saw a post where someone said.. they loved how great Gabriel could write something as awesome as Mercy Street and something as groovy as this... Such a true statement... Peter Gabriel has been my favorite musician as long as I can remember.. As for the groove.. Tony Levin never disappoints. His work on this groove or even what he did with Don't give up adds so much depth to the work period..

My father was obsessed with Peter Gabriel, so I always had to listen to it as a child, but you know what? I love him as much as my dad does. I am so thankfull that I was introduced to so many outstanding artist from that time like Peter, Kate Bush, INXS, Genesis, REM, U2, David Bowie, Prince..unfortunatly the only concert I was able to go to was a U2 concert.

+Harry Bosch I suppose Dire Straits' Money For Nothing video is even more impressive, seeing as how it was made 6 years prior to Gabriel's Steam.
@SpaceCattttt
@SpaceCattttt 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, while they're both great songs, Steam has the better video for sure. Money For Nothing, although groundbreaking at the time, is basically just a digital dude and his dog, watching Dire Straits play live on TV, and neon light shit buzzing around. Steam, on the other hand, is funny, clever and much more ambitious. Instead of simply being about "I want my MTV", it's actually trying to say something with pictures that complement Gabriel's often intriguing and complex lyrics. I don't know exactly what Steam is about, but if seen purely as a surreal experience, it's still very enjoyable. And while it may not be his best video (I prefer Digging in the Dirt or Shock the Monkey), Gabriel doesn't do bad videos. There's always something interesting going on. And the "STAND BACK!" bit at the beginning is hilarious! :)

I heard that although hits like Sledgehammer and Big Time were wildly popular, Gabriel was criticized by music critics for his music all "sounding the same", and that "Steam" (which of course has many similarities to his other hits) was a big middle finger to them. And guess what? People loved it just like Gabriel's other hits. Peter Gabriel is a legend.

Pretty sure a lot of today's picture filters were inspired by Peter's videos. He is a genius songwriter, and had a genius team working with him. And Sledgehammer? Hands down, cool as f. Especially since the man had the guts to put his lovely family in the video with him. Come on, that is what being a rocker dad is all about! I love him for that, and so much more.

A cool rhythmic groove from Peter, something Genesis could never have pulled off. I respect him for the fact he didn't reform for money like most of the '70's stars have. Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Collins & Hackett were a classic band, as long as they never come back they will always be remembered as such. I understand they met to talk about it, I'm glad that's all they did.
