Every time I find a live video of these amazing musicians, it puts a smile on my face Love The Oils!!!!

As a kid my favourite band by far was Midnight Oil. One day I went to an environmental youth forum at Tocal and as I walked from one workshop to the next, I walked around the corner and Peter Garrett was standing there towering above me. I looked up in total shock and said ´Oh, Peter Garrett`... I couldn´t believe my eyes, the man that headed my favourite band just appeared in front of me. Still kind of surreal when I think about it. An hour later he was a surprise guest talking in front of us about conservation. Great memory!

I caught the Oils at Rod Laver in Melbourne for their last ever tour. It rocked. They are more relevant now than ever before. Listen up millennials!!!

41 years ago I saw Midnight Oil at The Royal Antler Narrabeen. I have to thank the boys from The Strand house at Dee Why for taking me to the gig. It was late 1979, a warm night, people pouring jugs of iced water on each other and Peter Garrett's head, steam coming from the Lead Singer's bald cranium. Their music and especially their lyrics have made THE OILS one of the most important Rock bands in history. This new song ' Gadigal Land' is an instant Oils Classic. Words cannot describe how much I love this track. Sydney Radio station MMM played it every hour yesterday, so credit to them for that. Before they played it the first time I was thinking " oh, I hope it's good " I loved it from the opening chords, the thumping Drums, the throbbing Bass and Garrett's vocals delivering every word that is punching the Colonial invaders in the face. Well done boys, this is excellent!

Peter Garrat is just one member of Midnight Oil. It takes 5 guys to make that much noise... unplugged! The most powerful version of Short memory I've ever heard.

Amazed how good Short Memory sounds unplugged. A lot of 10,9,8 is a little flash in in terms of electric sounds but this just has that same thumping pulse that drives the original. Lovely.

@@thepcjunkie Exactly, he's (and the rest of Midnight Oil and others) trying to bring to light what is being pushed into the dark. Wake the fuck up. Tragedies, injustice, corruption etc. Media paints him as one thing when it's not what the message is about...

I remember seeing them live in Adelaide at Memorial Drive. Garrett came out wrapped in a banner, which, when two roadies un-raveled and PG spun around and around, read "Uranium Fades Your Genes". A great concert, great band. I was gob smacked when he became a minister for the labor party. He and the band did a much better job of trying to change / influence young minds, and stick it to the multi nationalists, big polluters and fascist regimes. We need another Midnight Oil.

we don't know what happens behind closed doors, but I'd like to think PG has had a impact for the better as a member of the Government. I think there's some truth to the saying that you should focus on fighting the battles you can win. I hope PG still adheres to that.

If you read the history books you'll see the see the same thing happens again and again and again and again repeat repeat short memory, well I'll tell ya never gonna see now, whadda you see now, whadda you see now, where do you go now, where do you play now, whadda you think now ... (gets a bit silly from then on)

Stuart Obviously you've never read history books. History is a constantly evolving process. We learn from our mistakes and try to improve. You're just a negative narrative of what really matters.

That's not true. Australia needs his voice like the world needs Noam Chomsky's. Imagine Chomsky had joined a political party in the US (this is a ridiculous notion I know), where would people get their truth from? Australians once got their truth from Peter Garrett and now they get political spin.

you should have stuck with the band and political comment rather than actually become a politician and realise that your previous utopia has always been a myth and as a politician you did exactly what you opposed as a free musician. Hypocrisy comes to all of us at some time in our lives but when you're a politician everyone knows about it.
@davidlawrence27768 жыл бұрын
I think most people venture into politics with the right intentions and face the same "status quo" as Garrett did. Pauline Hansen was denigrated from all sides of politics and was forced out of the political arena but she stayed true to her beliefs and convictions and she is back again to stand for what she believes. Garrett is no exception in politics but his ego and self opinionated preemption into the Labor Party was quickly quashed when Kevin Rudd transferred the blame onto Garrett as the minister for the environment over the deaths of several young men working in the insulation program. He got screwed by his own beloved labor party and it's leader. He doesn't have the real ticker to admit he was wrong with his venture into politics and came out the arse end just like so many other wanna be's. Come on Pete - admit you were screwed by your own Labor party?????? www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/peter-garrett-was-in-charge-of-home-insulation-program-mark-arbib-20140512-zr9zr.html
