Peter, Midnight Oil influenced me so much as a youth, and inspired me to want to make a difference in this world. Now my daughters (both aged under 10) frequently request that I play them this song (along with some of Midnight Oil's greatest hits) and genuinely ask questions about the lyrics and their meaning. You are still influencing the next generation with your songs and have truly made a difference.

I know it's a loose connection, but showing the rhyming lyrics in this video reminds me of INXS' "Mediate". Been re-discovering my love of the Oils and just now discovered that Garrett had put out a solo album. He has always sung from the heart, but it's great to hear him get more personal on many of the tracks from A Version of Now.

Nice ... "Peter Bob Dylan Garret" ... Definitely put that on the next Midnight Oil album Peter as it will get more traction .. I'm sure there will be one at some stage ... and "SCREAM" it a liitle more to make it more heartfelt ... Maybe the "It still matters to me" part ..."IT STILL MATTERS TO ME!!!!!" (-:

Great song, has a bit of the vibe from Oils' 10,9,8 and Red Sails. Intro is similar to "Outside World", and the rest somewhat like "Who Can Stand In The Way".
@fluosauvage3028 жыл бұрын
I must agree to disagree. How can you make such a comparison ? The early Oils were probably one of the best rock bands ever, full of inventivity, fury and beauty... This is flat and boring, already heard a thousand times before. Please, listen to "Outside World" and "Who can stand in the way" again and then listen to this and tell me what similarities you find because I can't seem to find any. Sorry for being partial, I'm probably the biggest early Oils fan ;)
@MikeLandicovers8 жыл бұрын
I get the "Who Can Stand in the Way" claim but this is still very different and has more of a techno pop feel. I like it. Hearing woman backgrounds is definitely very different.
@BedfordLevelExperiment8 жыл бұрын
The sparse, pulsing synth bass intros sound similar (not identical) to me - I've been listening to the Oils for 30+ years, they're my favourite band, both their newer stuff and old stuff, and that comparison is what immediately came to mind when I heard this new track. I've been playing bass for 25 years, and pay a lot of attention to the bass and rhythm of a song without really thinking about it, so that's a major part of what I mean when I compare. The bass lines and rhythm of the vocal delivery in the verses of "Who Can Stand..." also sounds somewhat like this new songs' verses and chorus.
@BedfordLevelExperiment8 жыл бұрын
Yes, Garrett's daughters brought a very nice touch to the whole album. One daughter is credited as the drummer on one track too!

I like both early Oils and this song. You have to admit, this could've been a very embarrassing album full of phoning it in and it's anything but.

I still like this song :) all you can do is try you're best Garrett no one's infallible when it comes to environmental problems that just slip away. Its hard to change but you still did well, but many things were never done, that's why it shouldn't just be in the politicians hands. It should be us making change with our money and practices. We run the country not the politicians, if we were honest with ourselves., and stopped crapping on about our 1st world problems and made the change to see what we do have, instead of feeding our own fascism, and capitalistic ideas and all worked together for once, to develop a better system of living. It would be better economically and environmentally its a process, and you're the influence!

How? Garrett is the person who ruined the best band in the world to record second-rate solo albums in the end... I can't get it. The best song on the album is an old Oil's song... So why not to spend his precious political time to do the same with the Oils and make better music?

trouble is, everything in this film clip is made from oil, gas, coal. Trees come down for us no matter where we live, even for making instruments like an acoustic guitar. We all wear clothing derived from oil or cleared land. We all eat something grown or farmed on cleared land. Most of us live in a house where forrest once stood. We all are watching this on a computer made of plastic and most likely poorly recycled, or phones with rare earth involved. We all drive cars or catch transport made from minerals, that all need mining, and huge energy on multi levels to do so. As much as I wish I had an answer, I'm clueless. Consume less is about good as it gets. Many of my cloths are plastic but are 20 years old. I prefer cotton but big crops, big fertiliser, big water, create a couple years lifespan. Leather shoes are nice, but the land used to farm a cow makes synthetic less impactful. Computer is 13 years old, phone 7 ( out of date, can't update, but still works a s phone), that sort if thing. Not everyones liking, but we can all consume less somewhere.
