David Dawson i am pretty passionate about this things myself. I am guilty also for attributing feelings to objects. I love those then and now videos about houses and other things. But I don’t want guitar players to think that this guitars are in fact magical and not the players. That is what drives the vintage market and it is us that raise the prices for them.

I talked with Peter Green and he kindly let me to play his Les Paul after a blinding gig in a small club in Ashington Northumberland playing to a handful of people when the original Fleetwood Mac had not long hit the road.The neck pickup was missing then and he told me it was being repaired. When I met him again later in Newcastle he said that the guitar sound had changed after the repair but didn’t know why! The mystery and debate continues but whatever, that guy could make elastic bands stretched over a biscuit tin sound amazing! RIP and you’ll always be with us!

Jimi Hendrix played stock CBS era guitars. David Gilmour after selling his iconic guitars said "they're just tools". Peter Green doesn't really care about the guitar. What does this tell you? It tells me it's not the guitar, it's the player. So many people disappear down rabbit holes chasing tone, when they could be practising and developing their own great tone.

Eh there are musicians that care to an extent, and a lot of them have at least one or two guitars they won’t sell. Billy Joe Armstrong still has the same strat he played as a teenager, jimmy page still has the les Paul Clapton gave him, Kurt Cobain refused to smash his hot rodded jaguar. They all have one they care about that they won’t sell or destroy for a number of reasons.

The debate goes on. Whatever the reason for the guitar having that slightly nasal out-of-phase sound in the middle position, the real magic was in Peter's fingers. At the height of his powers no-one could touch him and B B King famously said that he was the only guitarist who gave him the cold sweats. A lot of people said negative things when Kirk Hammett acquired the guitar but I agree with you that it was geat that he took it out on the road and played it instead of locking it up in a collector's vault and it was lovely to see the picture of Peter being reunited with the guitar. Although he is reputed to have said that the guitar didn't mean a lot to him, I can't help feeling that he must have felt something to have held it in his hands again. Such a shame Gary Moore is no longer with us as seeing the three of them together with the guitar would have been a special moment.

no believe me it wasn't only peter's hand, I did the same thing on my 335 and I've got that kind of nasal sound...anyway, the colour of the guitar is completely different and the neck was broken so it doesn't really has much to do with the one Peter had...last but not least, Kirk Hammett is an awful guitar player (but a nice guy), I'd prefer to see that guitar in better hands but who am I to say...

In the Peter Green biography he talks about the Les Paul in quite an of hand way, stating that it was hard to play because of the neck set up. He himself seems unsure of how the guitar got it's sound and he was never that happy with the sound, so go figure. I don't think he ever had any kind of love for any of his guitars, they were the tools of his trade. He had a beautiful Les Paul Standard Gold Top that he gave to Danny Kirwan. Mick Fleetwood bought him a Les Paul from the same year and Green barely played it. It's nice to see the circle being completed in the photo with Kirk. I'm not a fan of Metallica but I think the fact that he was willing to pay so much for and still get it out and play speaks volumes about him as a musician. I think the connection with Gary Moore is probably more important to Kirk. Anyway...thanks for the video and all the research and knowledge. I liked the sound of the SG.

Very interesting. So were both coils on the neck pickup rewound or just one ? I have a reverse wound middle pickup on one of my Strats , suppresses hum when combined with the bridge but shouldn't affect the tone too much , maybe it's a tad darker sounding than a std Strat. Anyway , personally I still think that the out of phase tone on the PG LP has more to do with the magnet flip. Maybe I'm missing something.
@TheGuitarShow4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shaun good question... But I think it was completely rewound. There's a subtle difference for sure.

Turning the pickup around plays a part, but also flipping the magnet does it too! I have done magnet flips and its not just that but if you turn the pickup around so the poles face the bridge or do the magnet flip then install reversed you get the tone??

Hi Andy yes you are right it's several things working at once but the magnet flip will get you in the bal park and is the most effective method.

A guitar's tone changes over the years. As the wood and top age & dry it changes the tone. Also, the environment the guitar is kept in affects it also. Temperatures and humidity have affects on the body & the neck. And like you've heard a bunch of times, after Gary Moore got in a car accident & the headstock was broke and glued back on, the sound changed. Put this next to another Les Paul of the same year, and yes, it sounds different. Some people are just def.

The Guitar Show I remember very clearly that Peter used Clifford Essex strings but with each string being the one above it. For example, he had the 5th string instead of the 6th, the 4th instead of the 5th, etc. Then for the top E he used a banjo 5th (G).... I know, because I was a huge fan and strung my guitar accordingly. I read about it somewhere, probably the Melody Maker or Beat Instrumental, which in those days were like The Bible..... Cheers

The Guitar Show I really don't know what the gauge was. In fact I am not even sure if they put it on the packet in those days. We are talking over 50 years ago.... Lol I have just remembered however that he copied that string selection from Mick Green of Johnny Kidd and The Pirates. Everybody tried to copy Mick Green in those days. He was way in front of everyone. Tone, attitude, and a Fender Tremolux dimed..... Johnny Spence, the Pirates bass player used a Leek 50 watt amp with 2 Goodmans 18" speakers, so did the bass player of Screaming Lord Sutch and The Savages. Richie Blackmore played in the Savages as well.... They were THE bands to go and see. In West London anyway.......

I'm so happy to have seen this legendary axe in person when I saw Metallica play last summer. I'd love to see it in Greeny's hands but sadly that's unlikely to happen any time soon.

Well actually Gibson used out of phase neck pickups for the Es 345 so probably just someone at Gibson that grabbed a pickups from the wrong box! 🤷♂️

A magnet flip would just reverse the reverse wind imo, I've got a reverse wound from mojo, you're to blame for that

Fact of the matter is not many know who Gary Moore or Peter Green are in the USA. Thin Lizzy was popular but not as much as you think. Many know who Metallica are. Peter Green is a no name you would have to google to figure out he was successful if you didnt live in his time frame. Very sad people talk so bad about Hammett, who is really the first superstar to own that guitar.

I want to build a replica of the Peter green burst soon. I'm the guy who sent pictures of my burst builds on Instagram. Once I finish up the pearly gates clone, greeny is next.

Don't think many kids watching Hammett will give a shit about the blues or care where the guitar came from. So sad such an iconic guitar ended up with him IMHO.

I agree with you. If anything he's making it lose value rather than increasing it. It should be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame or something.
@SteveSchuffert4 жыл бұрын
Obviously Gary Moore’s playing on it will never be surpassed.

I think alot of it is down to the player aswell. The tone have to be coaxed out and it takes some skill as a player to be able to do that. Demonstrated beautifully Ramon.

Greeny 's sound always makes the ears perk up. Spontaneous but restrained when needed. The only other guitarist that I am more impressed with is the late Otis Rush who both Clapton and Green acknowledged. Not only a mega talented player but a supremely talented vocalist and songwriter. Check out his self penned classics of 1958 never heard anything like it. By the way the SG sounds closer to Greeny . Great playing

The sg wins hands down. I wonder when Gary died if this was the guitar leaning against the night stand, when Gary was found dead in bed. Maybe Garys soul is in it, and Kirk figured it out. 2 million for a Lea Paul. Thats crazy.
