The scene with Diana where she ask her what self respecting person lies about their age just to be an assistant? I think Liza was thinking it was a foot in the door. It wasn't something she was wanting as a career it was a steppingstone to something bigger and it did do the trick because she became an editor and she like ran an in company within the company. With this day in age it's hard to get any job anywhere so you gotta do what you gotta do and Liza was just trying to get in the door.

First Liza must afford the studies for her daughter. Hopes she won't be pregnant and will have to make a definitive choice. (Really, Liza's husband is not attractive at all...I understand why her life was so boring) .
