"Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair" is a folk song, originally Scottish but given a new tune and American Appalachian identity in the 20th century. Many artists have recorded it, and this is one of my favorite versions.

How did this video escape my radar? I am a huge Avi fan, so this was amazing. I watched this five times in a row. LOL. I just can't get enough. I never noticed that Avi did that with his eyes when he sings lower. I noticed Tim Foust using his hand, but I didn't notice Avi. That's cool that you did! Great reaction/ analysis...as usual!

I agree Change on the Rise is vocally less dynamic then other songs you have listened to. Its the lyrics and Avi's smooth voice that people love. It also was the first single he had out in a long time after leaving Pentatonix, he did do some blue grass music before this. When it came out it was like YES Avi is back. I love his solo music but it is not for everyone. My favorite Pentatonix song I believe he and Keven wrote is called Run to You. 5 part harmony it is gorgeous.

I'm so glad you reacted to Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair - definitely a favorite of mine. Change on the Rise is a deeply personal song of his struggle with and through depression, and a call to rise from it. If you've never experienced real depression, it can be hard to relate to the song. But those of us who have, or have walked through it with a loved one...it resonates deeply.
@gailseatonhumbert91994 жыл бұрын
Situational depression or anxiety can happen to any of us with enough stress. Avi has my admiration for not doing the usual professional performer musician thing of getting into drugs or other self destructive behaviors instead he had the maturity to leave the work situation that was causing the problem for him.

Avi left the group, took a year off to be with family in the states and oversees. He spent a lot of time backpacking in the Sierra Nevadas and all over Europe. He came back to settle about 40 minutes out of Nashville, Tn and start to create his music. I saw him in concert a few times and the music is amazingly good and getting better with every new release. His music is Roots/Folk so its very different from PTX. ITs the kind of music I love best so I'm a huge fan.

I've always loved the joy that comes through your reactions but that may be the very reason you didn't get "Change on the Rise". There's no joy in this song..... no sweet spot.... no uplifting tune. There's no room for analysis, It's only about feeling. It's all about raw emotion and that emotion is dark. It raises the hair on your arms within the first 2 seconds of the song. It reaches down your throat and clenches your guts, preparing you to fight. It's a primal song about clawing your way out of the darkness and back into the light. A fight to rekindle the flame and claim back your soul. Even without knowing the backstory of Avi's fight with depression after leaving Pentatonix, the lyrics and visuals are clear. He is literally trying to bring light (fire) into the darkness (of his life) at that moment in time. I for one, am glad he chose to allow us to take the journey with him through his music.

🌺what’s nitemare I ditto your observation of Qofy not getting feels for Avi’s change on the rise… IMO: I am sure Qofy will get it once he has researched Avi’s personal battle with depression & anxiety peaked during /after PTX. With a friend he journeyed a few years soul searching in woods/ forests here and Europe. Having overcome his demons/battles is now ready to proclaim his Change On The Rise. Just IMO❣️😉🤙🏼

Hey QoFy, hey QoFy gang! I love these two songs, especially a Change On The Rise. With Avi’s solo music, it’s less about the technical vocal acrobatics, and more about the feeling of the song, coz Avi’s music is very spiritual. Listening to the full EP, you just put your headphones on, close your eyes and just let all the words wash over you. I went to his concert back in January, and once the concert was over I felt ... cleansed, almost? Anyway, if you want more Peter Hollens stuff, hes just released a collab with Tim Foust, a cover of Fire And Rain by James Taylor. He’s also done a collab with Scott Hoying. They covered Turn Up The Music by Chris Brown about 8 years ago! And there’s a fun separate bloopers video for it. He’s also done a really fun song with Hank Green, the Hobbit Drinking Medley, and yes it’s from the Lord Of The Rings franchise, but you don’t need to know that to enjoy the song, it’s a lot of fun! 😁😁
