Fun fact about the play this is based on. When Tinkerbell’s light is going out they would have kids clap their hands if they believed in fairies to revive her. The first time Peter Pan was played in front of an adult audience, the performers did not expect all the grown ups to participate in the bit. They did though, and this created such an emotional reaction from the performers that they had to take a small intermission to get themselves together before they continued the play 🥰 Bonus facts: it was tradition for Peter to be played by a woman, also in the production of the Disney animated movie here they almost had Nana come with them to Neverland
@DelGuy03

Thanks for providing all that great information. J.M. Barrie wrote the play in 1904 (and novelized it a little later), and it was produced almost every year in London as a holiday-time play for families, always with a woman playing Peter. There have also been multiple musical adaptations of it. This Disney animated version added the slapstick elements you noticed, had a boy voice Peter, and had it all magically happen in one night. (In Barrie's play, the children really do stay away for months, and they bring the Lost Boys back with them.) But Disney did keep it set in 1904, so that's the period you're seeing depicted, back when well-off English families would always employ a live-in servant, a "nursemaid", to look after the children -- only in this family, she's a dog. I wouldn't make too much of the "This has all happened before..." narration that the Disney writers added -- it's basically saying that children have always had fantasies of taking off to have exciting adventures, and then they grow up.
@vixiestarfire
@vixiestarfire Жыл бұрын
@@DelGuy03 in regards to the “it all happened before” part, I’m sure it’s something Disney also added but I think they imply at the end of the movie that Wendy’s father went to Neverland when he was a boy, at least that’s how I see it when he says he saw the pirate ship before when he was young. I like to think he went to Neverland with Peter too 🥰

The scene were Tinkerbell measures her hips has always been hilarious too me. It must've had a completely different context back then compared to nowadays.
@oliverbrownlow5615
@oliverbrownlow5615 Жыл бұрын
The joke in that scene is partly about perspective. Because Tinkerbell is standing on the mirror, her hips are closer to it than her head, and they appear proportionally larger than they would if she was just standing in front of a mirror.

Tinkerbelle can only "speak" through body language, gestures and her chiming sounds she makes. In the Disney's Faries franchise, she does speak but like animals speaking to each other, it's "translated" for us veiwers as shown in one of the films, when she talks to humans, they don't understand what she's saying, only her jingeling sounds like from this movie.

In the swedish dub the tonic is refered to as vitamins, similarly how kids in the early 20th century were fed with cod liver or castor oil in order to grow big and strong (back when vegetables and fruit weren't so common), the latter turned out to be poisonous though.

The "medicine" that Nana the Dog prepares to the kids is actually concoction of morphine and alcohol which was commonly used at the turn of the century (very early 20:th century) to make kids fall asleep easier and faster. In the swedish dub, they're rather reffered as vitamins, similiar to cod liver oil (which was something that kids had to take during early 20:th century to grow big and strong when vegetables weren't that common unlike today) or castor oil.

Hans Conried plays both Captain Hook and George Darling, which is kinda tradition in the play that the same actor plays both characters. Mr. Smee and all the pirates are voiced by Bill Thomson who is best known for doing the voice of Droopy Dog but also been in a lot Disney movies including The White Rabbit and Dodo in Alice in Wonderland, King Hubert in Sleeping Beauty, Jock, Bull, Dachsie, Joe and the Irish Policeman in Lady and the Tramp and Uncle Waldo in Aristocats (his final role before his death in 1971), as well as the title character of Screwy Squirrel cartoon Big Heel-Watha, Tom's cousin in Timid Tabby (a Tom & Jerry cartoon), Professor Owl in Melody and Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom, Ranger J Audubon Woodlore in several Donald Duck and Humphrey the Bear cartoons, Station Manager Flannery in Pigs is Pigs (the Disney cartoon, not to be confused with the Merrie Melody of the same name) and the first ever voice actor for Scrooge McDuck in featurette Scrooge McDuck and Money (before Alan Young started voicing the character).

One thing I love about Disney movies, is that they're really good at the details of their animal characters. Example, alligators are not really good at jumping out of water but crocs are. So to have the croc leap out at hook in the cave, though cartoonishly exaggerated is a real thing. They do similar things with other animals throughout yrs.

The reason for Hook's obsession for Peter Pan is because the boy cut off his hand and fed it to the crocodile, named Tick Tock Croc in fanbase. Tick Tock likes the taste of Hook so much, the crocodile followed him ever since as Hook said it, possibly even travelling out of Neverland just hoping to seek a chance to get another chomp on Hook. This humiliated Hook and wounded his proud so bad, he vowed vengeance on the boy. That's what the crew meant when they are sick and tired of their captain's obsessive vengeance for Peter. This also works for Peter too. Before that, Hook plans to plunder treasures from other worlds, including Wendy's. He knows that the other worlds outside of Neverland won't stand a chance against Hook's pirates, for in this time Hook's crew were notorious and well known. To protect those worlds, Peter had to come up with a way to make Hook stay in Neverland prevent the pirate from putting other worlds in danger. As Peter cut off Hook's hand, fed it to the crocodile, giving Hook a humiliating defeat, Pan now has the thing to keep Hook where he wants him. For Hook will kow be so obsessive to Peter, the captain won't be leaving Neverland anytime soon.

According to Wikipedia: "The term arises from a device developed for use in the broad, physical comedy style known as commedia dell'arte in 16th-century Italy. The "slap stick" consists of two thin slats of wood, which make a "slap" when striking another actor, with little force needed to make a loud-and comical-sound. The physical slap stick remains a key component of the plot in the traditional and popular Punch and Judy puppet show. " But it mean a physical-type of humor, often an exaggerated mock violent action. The classic case was the comedian who would slip on a banana peel. This was funny to an audience who knew it wasn't real - if the guy had not moved after he fell and other actors ran out on stage because he had actually hurt himself, it would turn into a tragedy.

If you really want to watch the Pinocchio remake, just watch the part of it when Honest John and Gideon are on screen-- then you will have seen all the good content of it. To answer your question: A shirtfront was a detachable chest you wore between the frock vest and the shirt, because this type of vest had a very low cutout and shirts at the time were considered part of the underwear so it was indecency to let it show in public, especially during social events that require the frock broken out.

Peter Pan is shown on Disney+ with the warning of racist content before the movie starts, along with other movies and/or tv episodes (such as The Muppet Show) that have similiar issues. It's a good thing in my book to show the movies and such uncut while still acknowledge the issues for people who do have serious problem with content or humor that is consindered racist today. Now if only Disney would release Song of the South again cuz such a classic shouldn't be hidden to the world despite it's problematic issues and acknowledge them like with the others. Disney should really stop from shying away from this, man up and just release it with a warning. Man, americans are overly sensative to a lot, they really need to chill down and just think about it without getting upset. Sure, racism is wrong but it shouldn't overdo it, just think of Cartoon Network not showing Speedy Gonzales just because they were afraid to offend mexicans but in reality they idolize him.

I completely agree. They still stereotype 'white Southern people' as redneck hicks in movies and nobody seems to get bent out of shape about that. You also have to take into account that Native American culture/behavior in the 1700s (probably the basis of Disney's characters) was probably a lot different than today.

There's an Italian singer(Edoardo Bennato)who has done a whole album with songs about"Peter Pan"...it's a shame no English speaker knows that...there are pretty epic songs in it and he also has done another about"Pinocchio"...again...a shame only we Italians know about that.

27:53 Well, he did use a poisonous cake in the musical. If you haven’t seen it, Cathy Rigby Peter Pan became a movie. Other than that version, as well as Hook and Return to Neverland, I liked the 200?3? Version, and the Tinkerbell films.

I enjoy peter pan a lot. One of my favorites. Peter pan has a few reboots and such.. there's hook which is not that good... Peter pan(2003) which is really good... and pan which sucks!!! The musical is fun and the prequel musical Peter and the star catcher is amazing

“Never smile at the crocodile No, you can’t get friendly with a crocodile Don’t be taken in by his welcome grin He’s imagining how well you’d fit within his skin Never smile at the crocodile Never tip your hat and stop to talk a while Never run, walk away, say goodnight, not good-day Clear the aisle and never smile at Mister Crocodile !” 🐊

These lyrics by Jack Lawrence were written for the crocodile's theme, a tune written by Frank Churchill during the early days of *Peter Pan* 's development, when Walt considered making it the second Disney animated feature film, instead of *Pinocchio.* Sadly, after creating some of the most beloved tunes of the 20th century for Disney's *Three Little Pigs, Snow White, Dumbo,* and *Bambi,* Churchill committed suicide in 1942, more than a decade before his tune for *Peter Pan* would finally be used.

The movie isn't based in the 50's. J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan in 1904. So the clothes and culture are from the 1900's not the 1950's. They made a movie about J.M. Barrie in 2004 called Finding Neverland. You'd find answers to a lot of your questions there. Also, I'd highly suggest watching something that sticks to the original story closer than the Disney-ized version before watching Hook. Hook is more of a sequel than a remake, but they assume you already know the original story so make references to a lot of things that got left out of this version. Hook is one of my favorite movies ever, but I really think you'd enjoy more if you have more context going into it. Funfact: The theme that plays everytime to announce the crocodile is there is a children's song called "Never Smile at a Crocodile."

Smee and Captain Hook's VAs were so freaking good in this. The ONE live-action remake that was actually good for me was The Jungle Book ... All the rest were meh, especially The Lion King. The Jungle Book followed the same story for the most part, but things were different and it was not 1 to 1 to the animated version. 94 critics/86 audience on RT... It's good. Also since you love magic and stuff, you have to check out The Sword in the Stone animated at some point.

Long shot to end all long shots: Please react to “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” by Mischief Theatre. It’s about a group of amateur actors at a community theater who try to put on a production of Peter Pan but things keep getting increasingly worse with the production. Actors forget lines, props break, people get injured on the sets, backstage drama spills out on stage, etc. It’s friggin hilarious, it’s only an hour long and it’s presently free on KZbin. Please react? 🙂
