Dang - Wendy in the classic animated film was so strong. Like the part where she walks the plank and keeps her chin up the entire time. As a kid, that really struck me. While not fighting pirates in the same way as Peter or the Lost Boys, Wendy exuded a different type of strength, something that the others lacked. She showed that growing up doesn't have to mean becoming an unsafe, selfish person. She demonstrated the kind of heart and compassion that is truly a strength in adulthood and is missing in so much of the world. Really sad to see that this subtle yet profound lesson was lost on the modern writers and they've instead gone the route of "girl has to be better at boying than boys or she's a victim of the patriarchy" route, which is so tiresome. What happened to celebrating diversity and our differences?! 😆

Sorry, but Disney's diversification only works in one direction. For example, the live-action adaption of Mulan featured approximately zero non-Asian characters, and the live-action remake of Aladdin didn't feature a single white actor. Any role that was previously portrayed by a white character is up for diversification, but any role that previously featured a non-white character can and will only ever be portrayed by a non-white character.

The symbolism behind Wendy is she represents the mother that none of them ever had including the pirates which makes her a treasure worth preserving that both the lost boys and the pirates are fighting for. I understand writers have to put a new spin on recycled material to make the story feel fresh. But I know they're only using an algorithm which has got to be the highest form of lazy writing.

Yes!!! This was the beauty of it. Everyone wants the story to have a watered down PC women but misses the subtly of Wendy, even thought this was made long ago. Wendy represents the poignant female lead, who is proud and motherly to not only her brother but to those around. Take for example her mother, quiet and reserved (seen as the “old model” for women). Both the author and animators show how a young women can break this mold and become a self spoken women who not only provides for others but also saves the day. But that implicit theme is “too much” for people to understand.

This is exactly what I have said for a long time to all my friends: woman (Gwendy) keep the human society from crumbling by caring, nursing, teaching the next generation (Lost Boys) while the man (Peter Pan) make sure no enemy (pirates) touch her and do his best to protect his family from any harm. Is it too hard to understand ?
@wun1gee
@wun1gee Жыл бұрын
@@kietdo4379 While it may be true, and may have always been true, reality doesn't support the post-modern conceptualization that there are actually no differences between the biological sexes and that if the woman wants to fight pirates she can and should be no worse at it than the man. Therefore she doesn't need the man to be the protector. But also know the woman in this new role is also the caregiver and loses no ability in that role either. To suggest that the woman can't be both the caregiver and the protector at the same time is sexist.

Having the lost boys not the all be boys takes away Wendy's uniqueness. The reason why the loss boys and peter were drawn to wendy is because of her feminine and her mothering. She was unique to them because they had only dealt with only boys. So, in a way, they are degrading Wendy. Not only have they been swept up in this, seemingly, never ending pursuit of "equality", but their IQs have gone through the floor. You have to use your fists and draw blood and do everything boys do!" If there are females who like being stay at home mums more power to them, but don't force it on every female, as if we don't have a choice on how we want to life our lives. In saying that, modern day feminism is a joke. It does not do anything for females or nor does it allow equal rights for males either. Don't think that 1960's feminism is the same as todays. While there are some things that are questionable in the 1960s feminism it did benefit for lack of rights females had back then, whereas todays feminism benefits no one. The irony that we need a new Peter Pan take when the original had: - Lost boys, basically insinuating that boys were the only orphans that weren’t wanted because a girl was preferential back then. - Wendy was the mature, level headed grown up of the group and demonstrated the importance of a mother figure. The boys would’ve become lost in Neverland without her, something that Peter never had. - A group of “Lost Boys” because boys specifically don’t want to grow up, whereas girls do.

Hollywood has denigrated the concept of motherhood for years (look how they made Sarah Conner bitter and regretful in Terminator Dark Fate) They somehow see it as demeaning and sexist to saddle a woman down with a kid (their perception), when the archetype of the mother as protector and guide and provider has been in art and mythology for millennia from the Venus Of Willendorf, to the Virgin Mary, to Sarah Conner. There are women who feel blessed and, yes, empowered, for carrying life and bringing it into the world (my own wife for example) But Hollywood sees it as somehow subservient.

It’s a weird form of sexism, to say that the strongest female characters in literature, who are strong BECAUSE they are female and highlight those strengths where women are at an advantage over men, cannot be considered strong unless they exhibit the same strengths that men usually have over women (I.e., physical strength) despite losing the unique feminine strengths in the process. They’re basically saying women can’t be strong unless they’re men, and there’s nothing more sexist than that.

Wasn't it an intentional choice to have it be the Lost Boys? They were a rough and tumble group of boys going on reckless adventures with their leader Peter. The name Lost Boys feels metaphorical for the fact that they forgot an important aspect of their lives. The presence of Wendy reminded them of the gentler side of themselves brought about by the nurturing presence of a mother figure. It even acted as a great source of conflict when Peter grew scared that he was losing the support of his followers and thought they might leave. It's such a shame that Disney is undermining the intent of the narrative and bastardizing the message the original was trying to tell.

To anyone who doesn't know, the original voice of peter pan was Bobby Driscoll, Disney's first child star. They fired him soon after the movie because he got acne (it is said). He was litterally banned from the grounds. He died at 31, found by kids in an empty building, surrounded by beer bottles and religious pamflets. No one knew who he was and he was buried in a pauper's grave at Hart Island. Eventually, his mom started looking for him a year later only to find out he died. With this new life action film and the horrible villain made out of him in Chip N Dale, I feel people need to know his story.

@@riglaxable actually I believe the copyright for the story “Peter & Wendy” was given by the author to a children’s hospital in England, and Disney paid them for licensing rights when the original animated version was released. Walt Disney usually did not like to pay royalties and you’ll notice that most Disney films are based on public domain stories: The Jungle Book, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Pinocchio, Beauty and the Beast, etc…. So they’re not required to make new versions of these stories.

The idea of gender differences is pretty silly. It's sad we haven't reached that understanding yet. I know nobody wants to hear it, but it's true. Girls can be tomboys, guys can like cute things. It doesn't matter what you like. What matters is when you run around yelling at the top of your lungs to be "represented" and demand that everyone call you by words you made up. When you have friends online it doesn't matter if they're male or female. People don't _need_ to define themselves by their body parts, but because everyone else is doing it now young people feel pressured to join the bandwagon. It would be better instead if we all said "You don't like tomboys/cute kittens? That's nice" and just went on with our day. If you're tough, good on ya. If you're good at raising kids, good on ya. I can't see a reason to care what body parts are dangling off you while you go about your business.

What I always liked about Wendy’s character is how in Neverland you never really know exactly how long the LOST BOYS, Peter and Tink have been there. Assuming based on Peters design he has been there the longest. For Wendys character, she shows them that it’s ok to grow up because they’re so afraid of growing older and taking on new responsibilities, or learning new things. They’re so comfortable with being a carefree child. Wendy who appears to be the oldest there is arguably the youngest but bc of her experiences she’s actually living a life worth living. Not living out of fear like Captain Hook who’s afraid of Death/Crocodile with clock

This will only make me watch the 2003 adaptation even more. It captured the Peter Pan spirit so well in everything it did. Wendy was the strong, feminine symbol for both the lost boys AND the pirates, and, while she was also able to wield a sword and fight pirates, it was all rooted in her love for playing pretend with her brothers, and the pirates themselves (except Hook) often felt like they only existed in the children's imagination. They managed to capture the childlike wonder of Neverland, helping the audience to not take it too seriously, without losing any of the weight carried in the various themes. In fact, they even added themes of love, husbandhood, and fatherhood to Peter's fears of becoming a man. It was such a good movie, there's no way this film will even come close.
