Jen Campbell Thank you for this! I will never think of Peter Pan the same way again. (Also I recently wrote an adaptation of Peter Pan based on all these versions of the story. And I'm planning on minoring in classic literature in college and major in theatre in college and it makes perfect sense seeing as Peter Pan was a play character as well as one of the most interesting and important literary characters for not only children but adults as well.)

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for your analysis and this amazing video! I've been anticipating this episode for a while now and you delivered beautifully! I just read Peter Pan for the first time this year and this makes me want to reread it again. While I didn't really arrive at a lot of the things you mentioned in this video, when I finished the book, I had developed quite a strong attachment to the story. Even while reading it, I felt that there were so many layers to it and certain elements of the story just stuck with me and I couldn't really understand or express why. I guess it is truly the sense of nostalgia, longing, childhood battling adulthood, growing up sort of thing that resonated then and continues to resonate now. It really wasn't a very "happy" book and the ending left me thinking about it for a while though I really couldn't explain why. This video helped to articulate some of my feelings about the story so thank you very much for that! :) Fascinated with reading it in the context of gender and performance as I really haven't thought of it in that way before.

this was really interesting, it's fascinating how dark so many children's books are when you really start looking into them. I think that a lot of the time authors, especially in the victorian era, would make statements or share opinions with symbolism in childrens literature that they wouldn't have been able to talk about in ",polite society".

The fact that wendy "falls in love" with peter pan reminds me of how some aromantic people talk about understanding themselves and being their own "partners" in life. The children even talked about him not being capable of "desiring" anyone, not mattering the gender, so maybe that is something to add to this interpretation.

You know you might find the movie and book versions of Howl's moving castle interesting. They both have theams of preformance (the movie representing them visually and the book through diologue) but in almost the oposite of Peter Pan as it was by being cursed to be an old woman that Sophie felt freed from society's expectations and embrased her own adventure. The story behind the book and its adaptation is also interesting as Dianna and Miazaki both lived through WW2 as children and use their respective craft to deal with that trauma but in diffrent ways. Yet even with their aproch being diffrent both manage to capture what the story is about.

I was so afraid of this video because I love Peter Pan, but it was so damn interesting because I always thought of Peter as Wendy's soul, but never occured to me Thinker Bell too. I have done a short study on Peter Pan myself during my studies at Uni, although it was in connection to adaptations. I like the ideas and arguments you have in this video! I find it very interesting, makes me love and understand the story more. I have read the play and I also have Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter and Wendy, as well as the play Peter and Alice. I absolutely loved this video! If possible, could you make more videos about this? I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the story! Also, have you read the book, The Child Thief by Brom? It's a much darker retelling of Peter Pan and has a lot of graphic content in it but it's very well-written and your video reminded me of it some because in the very beginning, Peter rescues a girl from her abusive father by killing him and then offering her a safe place where there are other children, and then throughout the book it talks about other people that Peter "rescues" in order to enlist in an army against darkness, not in Neverland, but a place called Avalon, and there's also religious questions raised in the story.

another fall reference is the fact that Peter has to remain ignorant of all things. he can't know what anything really is or else he loses his immortality and will start to grow up. which is why he thinks a thimble is a kiss and visa versa. also do you have any idea who Hook really is? because the book states that James Hook isn't his real name and makes it sound like he is really some historical figure.

In the play, it is implied that Hook attended Eton - his final words are Floreat Etona (though they aren't in the book). Barrie also said he based the character of Hook on Ahab (from Moby Dick). The narrator says that Hook was associated with Blackbeard, a real and notorious pirate. :)

oh. well in the book Barrie wrote "Hook was not his true name. To reveal who he really was would even at this date set the country in a blaze". I didn't know if Barrie intended Hook to be a real person or if there were any theories as to who hook is.

This is a really interesting video, and a way I have never read Peter Pan - I only read it as a child so it was just a fun adventure for me then. I loved this so much, Peter Pan is my favourite book and I love that I'm still able to learn more about it. Your thoughts are so interesting and it seems like you have so much more to say, would be fab if this turned into a series on Pan!
