Bart Ehrman, author of the highly popular Truth and Fiction in The Da Vinci Code and Lost Christianities, here takes readers on another engaging tour of the early Christian church, illuminating the lives of three of Jesus' most intriguing followers: Simon Peter, Paul of Tarsus, and Mary Magdalene.
What do the writings of the New Testament tell us about each of these key followers of Christ? What legends have sprung up about them in the centuries after their deaths? Was Paul bow-legged and bald? Was Peter crucified upside down? Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute? In this lively work, Ehrman separates fact from fiction, presenting complicated historical issues in a clear and informative way and relating vivid anecdotes culled from the traditions of these three followers. He notes, for instance, that historians are able to say with virtual certainty that Mary, the follower of Jesus, was from the fishing village of Magdala on the shore of the Sea of Galilee (this is confirmed by her name, Mary Magdalene, reported in numerous independent sources); but there is no evidence to suggest that she was a prostitute (this legend can be traced to a sermon preached by Gregory the Great five centuries after her death), and little reason to think that she was married to Jesus. Similarly, there is no historical evidence for the well-known tale that Peter was crucified upside down. Ehrman also argues that the stories of Paul's miracle working powers as an apostle are legendary accounts that celebrate his importance.
A serious book but vibrantly written and leavened with many colorful stories, Peter, Paul, and Mary Magdalene will appeal to anyone curious about the early Christian church and the lives of these important figures.

I'll say one thing about vids concerning religion, Xtianity in particular, they always bring out the nutters. It's always a delight to watch commenters attack, insult, and rant against people who have spent their lives studying and researching an area of academic interest. Ehrman has 30+ years of research. He's fluent in Koine Greek, and has a passable grasp on Hebrew, Coptic, and I believe Latin. He has read the NT and associated literature more times and in more ways than any of us possibly ever will. But go ahead. I'm sure you clearly have more insight and understanding.

I am so happy to comment that my research has lead me in a different direction. in those days even the deciples did not understand what Jesus was trying to teach them. They did not believe in the equality of women and men but Jesus never shared those beliefs and although the Bible (which has been changed, added to and deleted in parts) did not say much about Mary, Jesus was especially close to her and they the deciples did not like it; in fact they hated her and treated her badly when Jesus was not around. the Bible made Jesus so inconsistent, one has to choose which parts to believe by measuring each aspect against LOVE. Jesus was about love in thought, words and deeds. Peter was extremely flawed and although Jesus loved him - Jesus did not judge - John was closer to Jesus than him. Peter only changed after he saw the "resurection" which was not really a resurrection as Christians believe. Once you are dead where the silver cord has snapped releasing physical body from the soul which continues with the spirit body. Jesus returned as a spirit, a highly developed spirit and Mary was the first to see him because she was special to him..not the men. There is much I can say here with much more clarity thst when I listen to these experts my feeling that they haven't started yet.. sorry! and by the way, Jesus was not tge first to rise from the dead. Everybody who has ever died physically rises instantly...no waiting. Jesus also rose instantly. CE

Jesus said, "Look, I will guide her to make her male, so that she too may become a living spirit resembling you males. For every female who makes herself male will enter the kingdom of Heaven*** My Reading : The true spiritual self within a woman is the same as that of man in spirit. The Kingdom of God is within you (male or female) ...read Luke 17:21-22... "she too may become a living spirit resembling you males."...The kingdom of God within a man and woman is similar or alike or resemblance. At about 14:30 or so, Ehrman talks about the lawsuit by the writers of Holy Blood, Holy Grail against Dan Brown (DaVinci Code) and IIRC, he incorrectly states the reason those writers lost their plagiarism case. IIRC, the decision by the judge was that since the writers of HBHG claimed that the book was history, it was not possible to plagiarize history. Thus, the HBHG writers were hung by their own petard.

A near death experiencer was shown more details about the relationship between Rabbi Yeshua - Jesus and Mary Magdalene. .... ... "One day, when we were in Jerusalem, the Pharisees and others who lived only by the letter of the law, brought before Yeshua a woman who was beautiful and, having been caught in the act of adultery, had been stripped to the waist to reveal her shame to others. “The Law of Moses tells us that those caught in adultery should be stoned to death. This woman we caught in the very act and her shame is revealed. Should we stone her?” "Yeshua looked at the woman crouched on the ground with her nakedness revealed. "Stand up." he said to her "and face your accusers." Then he said to the men who had brought her, “Look on her! Is there any man among you who does not feel the wish in his heart to do the same act with her? She is a beautiful woman. Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.” There was much hesitation, the woman standing before the men, as the stones dropped one by one. When the accusers left, Yeshua turned again to the woman and said, “You may clothe yourself again. No one has condemned you. Neither do I.” Then he turned to us and said, “Any man who has looked on a woman with lust, has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Do not judge the woman if the same desire is in your own heart, because then we would all be stoned to death.” “What is your name?” he asked the woman. “Mary --- of Magdala.” “Go and sin no more,” he said. “I will not sin, but I cannot go. You have already taught me much and I would learn more. My life was darkness, but now I see light in your face. You have saved my life. Perhaps you can teach me how to control my great desire.”| ( Bruce F. MacDonald Ph. D., The Thomas Book, Near Death, a Quest and a New Gospel by the Twin Brother of Jesus)

Gregory the Great in his own mind as the pope, stated in 1591 that Mary was a fallen woman in the church's continuing desire to destroy worship of the Divine Feminine. The Knights Templar dedicated Notre Dame to her, Mary of Magdala, rather than Mary the mother, for many reasons. They were neither wrong nor misguided.

There is a fascinating story that Mary Magdalene came to the South of France along with 60 other early Christians and hid in the caves in Provence along the road to Aix en Provence, a Roman city. If you go to St Maxima en Baum (Mary of the cave) there is a very early church over the cave, later cathedral, 3rd sarcophagus and her relic bones. If you go there everything is just so spooky and makes so much sense, everything just so early, the sarcophagus so early and Roman, detailed with figures of her on it.......Earliest Christians in France came from this area .....Go there some day.

If there was a Jesus, he lived too long ago and was too obscure during his lifetiime to have been documented adequately enough so that there is no question of his existence. Therefore, this is likely an endless (and fruitless) debate. However, we do have the purported teachings of Jesus, which if examined with discernment reveal certain principles which can be adopted into one's life and practiced. Really, what is more important? That we investigate the veracity of the teachings as they can be applied to our lives here and now or that we can establish the historical origin of those teachings? If there was a Jesus who was responsible for these teachings, what do you think would have mattered to him?,
@anotheryou218
@anotheryou218 9 жыл бұрын
AnarchoRepublican I agree, but that doesn't make it nearly as important (to me) as the fact that the teachings can be practiced and verified through experience. The principles underlying Jesus' teachings are not unique to him, but indeed he had "made them his own" and expressed them in his own unique voice with an authority that "astonished" his listeners.

If Mary Magdalene went to Jesus' tomb and was the first to proclaim Jesus' missing body, starting Christianity (as Ehrman claims), then she had an address of a tomb. B. So why is Mary Magdalene visiting tombs at all? Was she crazy then?

The thing that fascinates me most about Bart is his intense interest in something he doesnt believe. I mean if the underlying reason for having a New Testament was to believe in Jesus then why study the damn thing after you stopped believing in it. Ive never heard of an Islamic scholar studying the Quran after he decided to leave Islam. Ive never seen a Christian studying the roots of Atheism and writing books on it if they are Christian so why is Bart doing that as an Agnostic. If you believe the Bible is inaccurate then or corrupt then thats fine but do you need to go around preaching it as well ? I mean what does he get out of it ? JESUS AS A PROPHET IN THE BIBLE: Matthew 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. Matthew 14:5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. Matthew 21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. Mark 6:4 But Jesus, said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. Mark 6:15 Others said, That it is Elias. And others said, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets. Luke 4:24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. Luke 7:16 And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. Luke 13:33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. John 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. John 4:44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country. John 6:14 Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. So Jesus answered them and said, "My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me"(John 7:16) John 7:40 Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. So Jesus said, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught me (John 8:28) John 9:17 They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a PROPHET. For I did not speak on my own initiative, but the Father himself who sent me has given me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told me (John 12:49-50) He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me (John 14:24)

If some of the stories have been altered, then it could all be altered, and that's what the problems of Christianity are, the gospels were all written decades after the fact, none of the gospel writers new Jesus, all the gospels differ, and Jesus said himself that he had only come for the Jews, it was Paul who started all that. Take care, are you praying to an Idol, because if you are G_D hates anyone bowing down to any one other than HIM. search the Jewish Torah for the truth, I am not Jewish, just in case you think I have an axe to grind.

The well known wedding at Cana where enough food and drink was magically produced for the masses attending was in fact Jesus and Mary's own wedding. He says so himself. Yes, of course he says so, did you think he went away or went silent or turned his back on humanity? He lived some 600 years in THAT body in THAT most famous lifetime, moving about throughout Europe mainly with his Wife and children and the orphans they took in. What do you know of what happened to his family, his Mother, brothers and sister after he supposedly left Earth? What happened was that they were forced to flea their homeland by the Roman authorities and of course all the stories are truth, that they wound up in France at first and this is why small towns around southern France highly praise Mary Magdalene, have erected a statue of her and how and why they know much more about her than anyone who reads the bible or any other Christian pieces of misinformation. Jesus has authored/inspired/channeled his own autobiography through Tina Louise Spalding. If you know-it-all and feel you can judge such a book as being from Satan, the Devil or some other Source, good luck to you! If you can admit that you do not know-it-all and have no idea if the book can be from him or not, I urge you to take a peek.

Kevin Paul The Acts of Peter has been known for long over a decade and sounds completely stupid to me. Talking dogs? Its almost as dumb as saying a Serpent can talk or a donkeys mouth can be opened and speak, both which are written in the Bible. Hey, I know God can do anything, I really do, but somethings just seem odd. I personally dont believe Peter ever set foot in Rome
@KevinPaul444
@KevinPaul444 8 жыл бұрын
+The Omega Agents HD I'm not referring to the book Acts of Peter, yes that book is similar to many apocrypha books of the new testament, written by Gentiles following after the liars of Paul and Josephus. But I am referring to the True acts of Peter, hidden within the memoirs of his disciple, Clement of Rome. Have you read all of the Recognitions of Clement? Here is a link - www.studylight.org/history/early-church-fathers/view.cgi?sid=ant&aid=08-04 A lot of what I am about to say below is affirmed in the Recognitions of Clement, even with it being a still Greek doctrine handed down to us, so just imagine what the unedited Aramaic or Hebrew doctrine would have sounded like, it just would have been all the more clear, not to follow Paul. I also agree that Peter did not go to Rome, and was also not crucified, as pointed out within those books I am referring to. The followers of the apostles believed in the Ascension, not the Resurrection, simply meaning that the Christ "rose" into heaven in spirit, and not as if a zombie risen from the grave. But referring to how he ate bread with them after the crucifixion, that is because he was let down from the cross, as told from Josephus, and in the Dead Sea Scrolls. And he was exiled to England, as some researchers have come across, Mary Magdalene was separated and exiled to France. That is why there is a legacy of them in England and France, because it is true. Surely the truth has been omitted form history, and the way for us to find it is to gather bits and pieces of it, and put them together. In my investigation I have concluded that the apostles were Essene Nazarenes, and that the Zealots and Sicarii were branches of the Sadducees - just what they did not want us to figure out. The Herodians were aligned with the Sadducees, and Paul was really a Herodian. Both of these parties were aligned with the Romans. By the time of the fall of the city, the majority of the public were aligned with the Nazarene church under James the Just, but he was stoned, which led to civil war. Finally the people saw that the Essene way of life gained prominence, but shortly after the Romans, Sadduccees, and Herodians, destroyed everyone siding with the Nazarenes or Essenes and then had a goal to eliminate all Essene bloodlines and historical remnant of their existence, which is what we see, the true church was destroyed and false doctrines were written over it, pretending to stem from the truth. That is why Paul speaks about the Nazarenes with contempt in his early letters, his new church is one of greed and animosity because he is destroying the source and starting from his own agenda. Nobody knows any of this specifically because Paul and the historian Josephus are liars, if people understood that they were complete liars Christianity would be the opposite of what it is.

Jesus was not killed or crucified, but saved by Almighty God and taken upto Him. Due to their childhood-formed view of the world and its threat to them they have shyed away from being assertive and taking action in their life to get their human needs met. The anxiety they feel about not being good enough (possibly from messages received as child) drives them to earn the approval of God by doing stuff for him, in extreme cases of delusion a person derives meaning from actually BEING Jesus (or whoever).

You're getting confused about what Ehrman believes to be what actually happened, historically, and what he believes the texts (the oldest/most reliable) texts themselves say (there's lots of disagreement about which passages are original etc among scholars). So it's not a contradiction: Ehrman can believe that, in reality, Jesus was never put into the tomb, but can support the bible passages/traditions which say he was (and that Mary Magdelene knew this, and later showed up there, as opposed to those which say she wasn't, or don't mention her by name). Remember, Ehrman doesn't even believe in God (or any gods), so he's coming at this from the point of view of a textual scholar and historian.
