Although I was brought up in the Christian faith, I haven't been a practicing Christian for decades and have no real abiding interest in the subject, so I've been trying to figure out why I have been listening to so many of the interviews and lectures posted here. I've concluded that it's the simple pleasure of listening to anybody speak intelligently, at length and in depth, on any subject -- so rare these days.

foss rampant Yes, it is fascinating to hear someone talk intelligently about this material..,. Which ironically calls attention the unnoticed fact of how uninteresting most of what we have previously heard has been. This is a bit surprising , since one might rightfully expect that god’s attempts to communicate with us would be nothing short of astonishing.

George Yes! One would reasonably expect “the word of god” to be unambiguously clear; not to require innumerable human interpreters with widely divergent explications
@drgeorgek

Ardy Hagen how convenient for the church and clergy that “only them” can interpret the so called inerrant word of god and in doing so protect their privileged position and control the poor laity who they deceived and continue to do so today. Pathetic.

George Yes, almost all “believers” become convinced that preachers are messengers of god. believers disregard the reality that preachers are all too human; they have the same self interested frailties as any other human. And as churches evolve into large organizations, these organizations develop the same self serving structures that are typical of any large organization.

The main keys to a pastor keeping his job are: 1. Don't "rock the boat" by bringing anything traditionally accepted as true into question. 2. Keep reinforcing the feeding the flock the same old over-simplified, re-warmed pablum that they got as kids in kiddy Sunday Schools. 3. Agree especially with those who represent the monetized core of members who funds your salary.

One reason the pastors might not be sharing this information with their congregations is because they could be fired for it. Many pastors are not the leaders of their church, they have been hired by a group of elders or deacons, who can fire them if they begin preaching something from the pulpit that they do not agree with

Interesting there are so many critics of Mr. Ehrman who I gather have never read the Bible in the original Greek or have limited study of the historical context of its language or of the historic period. O'well, you can't convince fundamentalists of anything they don't want to believe.

***** True enough. I certainly have my own biases concerning Christianity having grown up in an extremely fundamentalist Christian culture. However, I don't drink whatever punch an atheist pours for me. I don't agree with everything Ehrman says or with all of his interpretations of biblical literature. He played no role in my rejection of the religion. But I, too, have seen atheists jump on an anti-Christian bandwagon without due process of research.

"Why don't more ordinary Christians know this stuff?" Honestly, it's because most of the people in the pews want reassurance from their pastors, and not the kinds if ambiguities that scholarship necessarily entails. There are exceptions, of course. If you look to some of the major Episcopal parishes, along with some other denominations, in larger cities, where the clergy are often of a more scholarly bent, you will indeed here some of this. I live in NYC, and here, one is very likely to learn a lot of this. Many clergy here are trained at scholarly seminaries Like Union Theological, Yale Divinity, and General Theological Seminary. And their parishioners are a pretty academically sophisticated lot. But in suburban and rural churches, the tolerance for scholarly ambiguity is often far lower.

I attended a conservative bible college in the early 1970’s. Even then many of the faculty taught much of what Dr. Ehrman describes regarding the inconsistencies in the the gospels and other content in the New Testament. It is troubling to me that clergy with this knowledge keep their congregation in the dark. Within my extended family their are a couple ministers. I often question their integrity. And the basis of what they say is a calling. One has left the ministry. If their truly was a call how can he deny it? I question there choice of career because I know to much about their character.

We are very fortunate today : uniquely we have available to us a written work which explains and describes the exact and entire nature of creation and the relationship between creator and created. “The Commentary On The First Six Chapters Of The Baghvad Gita” by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is essential reading for that tiny number of people who seek to understand The Way The Truth and The Life. Once having read this work the way all other holy scripture works falls into place. Without reading it all holy scripture is an insoluble mystery

Imagine you are told something today by someone you don't know, that happened say 60 years ago, you have no proof from any source except this person's story (which we can call here-say). Another person comes to you and tells you a similar story but there are contradictions and still more here-say. Again, another tells you something different from the previous two but with more added here-say that's new to your ears. On and on this goes for a few years until you decide to write a book about all you heard. But before you begin, you ask those people for a living source, but all are gone. Well, "How about some documentation?" you ask; but there is none. So you sit down and chance writing a book based on what those people had told you. What do you think would happen to you? You won't be writing for any legit publisher and you may never have a fan base except a few fanatics who are unwilling to search for the truth because there is none, they only believe what you tell them. Unless of course you call this book fiction in which you may have a best seller on your hands. However, you do not pass this off as a true story because this is not what we do as humans if we are to come to an understanding for our existence.

Dr. Erhman, the light of your research does provide a lot of insights into the true reflection of historical Jesus Christ. This certainly deserves the highest compliment for your dedication in this realm of studies. It is of paramount importance for one to have sound knowledge about the religion before picking up the faith. For example, the historical information about the trinity does shed clarity into my understanding. For a long time, I had problems compromising to the fact that Jesus is the Alimighty. By literally reading from John's gospel pertaining to the Baptism of Jesus Christ creates a dilemma. How could God being descended from heaven be perceived contemporarily as Jesus Christ, who is mortally co-existing. From this perspective, it is clearly undestood that Jesus cannot be the Alimighty. This is fundamentally a myth creating another myth. It may not be difficult for me to come to terms with the prior. However, to be able to swallow the latter is beyond me. The purpose of creating the trinity has been used by Christians to unify religions. If the Almighty does exist in the Christian context then why are there so many religions after 2000 years. Aparently not, as this has been answered by time. If God does exist, then Jesus is just deem as another prophet introducing another religion to mankind.
@MichaelSmith-ku7ki

Re: _"How could God descend from Heaven and be perceived contemporarily as Jesus Christ, who is mortally coexisting"_ This is no different than God speaking to Moses out of the burning bush, or appearing to Job and Ezekiel in the whirlwind, or communicating to the people of Moses as a pillar of cloud by day and as a tower of flame by night during the 40 years they wandered the desert. The flesh of a man is nothing magical, special, restrictive, or limiting to God. And if you say "God can't be a man and God simultaneously", then how can a human being be alive and simultaneously play a character of Skyrim or become Mario in Mario Cart? Why doesn't the human player die when Mario is killed? Your Loyola trained Jesuit Bart Ehrman isn't consistent (if God can't be Jesus, he can't enter and speak through the burning bush either!) and history proves Jesuits aren't honest. You should realize he's just scratching your itchy ears the way you're yearning for them to be scratched. But he's certainly not telling the truth. Biblical Jesus is the Creator taking on the Flesh of a man the same way a flesh and blood human being takes on electronic form and represents himself in an electronic world in a video game. A Creator always has the ability to represent themselves in their own Creation. Teen-age human beings have been doing this in electronic worlds men create for decades. It is nothing for the God who Created the flesh to personally animate and control some of that flesh in the form of a man to Communicate with His worldly Creation. God does that to keep His WORD, to provide a PERFECT example for men to follow in a manner he can process and understand, and to save us from His NATURE - namely that God is PERFECT and His PERFECT HOLINESS, PERFECT RIGHTEOUSNESS, and PERFECT JUSTICE cannot know corruption. Therefore Human beings in their corruption, rebellion, and SIN cannot stand before the PERFECT INCORRUPTIBLE JUDGEMENT OF A PERFECT AND HOLY GOD and not face separation. If we know from the Laws of Thermodynamics that matter cannot be created or destroyed, then the souls of the beings that God Created cannot be destroyed either. That means you either stand before the Judgement of God in corruption knowing God, even it he loves you, cannot know or TOLERATE AND FAIL TO PERMANENTLY SEPARATE REBELLION AND IMPERFECTION FROM HIMSELF. That's God's Nature. And only in Christ Jesus can a man's Sin and Corruption be washed clean. And those who in pride REJECT Christ deserve what they get. Good luck with the Judge. "Good" deeds won't get you out of a traffic ticket in a HUMAN court. They're sure not going to help you with God. And ALL human religions are prideful and about balancing "good" deeds with corruption - except one.

Jesus said and foretold as COMMANDED BY THE ONLY TRUE GOD-THE FATHER: BY THE FRUITS YE SHALL KNOW THEM Radical Monotheism exactly like the Jewish Prophets/ Jews to believe in a uniquely ONE GOD-without any partners or equal or like a three in a one falsehood called the doctrine of the Trinity -plus believing in the Messiah Jesus sent by God, and the essential consistency with his doctorine - the Muslim. The very words that the Father-the only true God Commanded Jesus Christ to say. The doctorine of THE ONLY TRUE GOD that HE COMMANDED Jesus Christ to give. The testimony of Jesus Christ the Father: - The only True God (John 17:3) - The only one who knows the Hour (Mark 13:32) - Greater than I ( John 14:28) - Greater than all ( John 10:29) -My God and Your God ( John 20:17) The doctorine of Jesus Christ = The doctorine of a Muslim (Of course the term Father in the Jewish context. A figure of speech for their times. Not that God has a literal son. God has got Son by the Ton in the Bible) Defenders of the true honor and status of Jesus Christ against lies and abominations which includes the crucifixion. Christianity more like the Greek and Roman doctorines and pagan doctorines like " God" coming down in human form and human/blood sacrifices that pagan had going hand in hand with Paul's doctorines of easy fake salvation with blood of an innocent, making the Merciful God into a blood thirsty vampire. The same people making Jesus Christ UNRIGHTEOUS by their position ( believing in the fiction called crucifixion) and making the Father a treacherous back stabber by their position and doctorine. Christianity actually the followers of Paul. 2000 years ago, the Roman and Greek Empire with its culture and Mythological and pagan roots already hold the beliefs such as " God coming down in human form" so after witnessing just a single "miracle" from Paul the deceiver they were conforming to their already held beliefs. No wonder when they heard this guy Jesus with all the stories of his miracles, it was easy for them to take him as a "Son of God" (and this concept later on developed into taking him as a God) as this already went hand in hand with their pagan and Mythological belief system. Little wonder that those times and places and people also had "Triads" and ancient " Trinities" and "God" in three and stuff. Act 14:11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, THE GODS HAVE COME DOWN to us IN HUMAN FORM!" ******** Then of course the abomination of the alleged human "sacrifice" of Jesus Christ making the most merciful into some human blood thirsty Vampire. Going against the very teachings of the true Prophets and that includes Jesus Christ. ******** Unfortunately, it was the Pauline Christianity and Pauline falsehoods, blended with pagan doctorine and backed up by the powerful Empire that eventually won out over the years and wiped out the Jewish movement radical monotheism.

For me, the most interesting part of the "keep the Jewish law" thing from Pauls point of view is that he said, "we have written and CONCLUDED" (Hebrew: krinantes i.e. having adjudged) that the law does not need to be kept. NAS: we wrote, *having decided* that they should abstain KJV: have written [and] *concluded* that they INT: we wrote *having judged* to keep from them Maybe I just do not understand but to me, it seems Paul _descided_ that the Gentiles do not have to keep the law. Exactly the opposite of what Jesus says to his followers. Remember Jesus instructed the apostles to spread the wors to the end of the world.

+John Booker There is a good reason there are no "autographs" by Jesus of Nazareth. Autographs are actual writings from the author's hand to paper/tablet. Btw, there are NO autographs for the entire Bible - which is the best thing of all! Why? 1. Real history causes ancient documents to corrode naturally. How else to preserve the Text but by copies being copied and copied and copied over the years. Worried about mistakes? Don't be because . . . 2. The more copies we have, the better we can ascertain which ones form a continuity of narrative. Compare, contrast, examine, test ancient writing (of any sort) is well identified via many copies. Wading through variations actually clears up which documents are valid or not. All of this points to authenticity. 3. Whereas one written text (like the Koran) exhibiting one united voice points to fabrication by one author. 4. Jesus states "Heaven and earth will pass away but my word will never pass away" Matt 24. There is a lot to this, but briefly, this and much else points to Jesus claiming he is God, the Author of the entire OT and NT! Test and see if this claim is true. Reliable testing occurs by dealing with the Text content, plot line, narrative, itself. Not the silly, truncated "mistakes" Ehrman points to. Take the claim, Jesus is making about himself being God, for example. Focus on that claim and see if it is upheld throughout the entire Biblical Text: Genesis to Revelation. "Sacred Bond" by Michael Brown is a good book that outlines the entire Bible and shows how Jesus IS the Christ, using the entire OT/NT. The evidence is quite clear.

***** Hide what? The "contradictions" are minor and insignificant in comparison with the indisputable message of the New Testament, which is that Christ is risen. No biblical scholar doubts that that's the main point of it. Ehrman is a "merchant of doubt," making lots of money publicizing material that biblical scholars (most of whom are people of faith) have known for a long time. Some of this material is rather technical, concerning the meanings and nuances of certain Greek words and phrases. He himself acknowledges that most discrepancies between manuscripts are inconsequential.

One other thing Ben the reason the Muslim asked you which Bible is because he only has one holy book the Qur'an and they are all the same word for word as for Christians who have so many different versions all with different interpretations I lost count and there in lies the problem. You say to know Jesus is to know God well then you better pick yourself up the Qur'an and get to reading because he is discussed more in there than any Bible...the only difference being and this is those details I told you about is in the Qur'an Jesus doesn't get crucified he is taken to heaven by God and Muslims view him as a prophet like Moses, Jeremiah ect. But Christianity must be the correct religion with countless versions of it one of the denominations picked the right one or did the non denominational ppl get it right? Or maybe the Jews have been right all along...well good luck with that if you need me I'll be studying the cosmos I like to find truth on my own not a big fan of someone telling me this truth because oh wait they don't have a because you have to have faith...makes sense I'll trust the desert dweller from 2,000 years Ago he definitely knew what was going on...couldn't read or write but he got the God thing right...smh

They don't want to scare them away and create doubt with the application of reasoned analysis. I just got schooled by an agnostic. I definitely don't know what I don't know. I kind of need to meet this Jesus to find out the stuff he really said and did. I was already interested in the Jesus before the politics and interests of Constantine. I am now even more interested in the earlier Jesus. The historical perspective has not really altered the counterintuitive nature of the teachings of Jesus, nor goes it seem to have changed the two great commandments of Jesus' reductionist message of all things biblical down to a single word. When the chisels and hammers come out, that one word is still there! That one word just will not go away. Man, that staying power is so freakin' awesome! Free speech is awesome, but love is even more awesome! The two great commandments do not exist in the Koran. When the Koran is reduced, only smoke, dust and vapors are left. Islam greets challengers and critique with swords, knives, guns and explosive devices because it fails under intelligent, scholarly challenge.

Humans are not stupid we are rational and logical beinga , you have people from the unintelligent layman to people with phd's converting to islam , theres obviously something there that attracts them , maybe try to youtube some videos on some misconceptions you have and give the "oponents" a chance to explain themselves from an actual muslim scholar .

Are you so dull to listen to this garbage Bart tells. Its not like they wrote the scriptures and say here the scripes fresh off the press. Scholars look at what was going on in those times to date the gospels. The gospels could have been written right after the crucifixion. We can look at the much important fact that the Jewish temple was destroyed in 70 AD, No where in Matthew, Mark, and Luke, where JESUS says this will happen, had it happened yet. Such an important event as this, would have been told in the gospels as one of JESUS prophesies coming true but it wasn't. So that could only mean, the gospels had to of been written before 70 AD. I know this could be only speculation and you can simply say, they didn't include that, It is speculation, though scholars base their dating process on.

Ted cox The New Testament's synoptic Gospels and Pauline Epistles were written c. AD 40-65. The Johanine Gospel, Epistles and the Book of Revelation were written c. AD 90-95. Matthew was written (or dictated) by the Apostle Matthew. Mark was dictated by Apostle Peter to John Mark. Luke and Acts were written by the historian Luke, a companion of the Apostle Paul. John was written (or dictated) by the Apostle John. The Pauline Epistles were written (or dictated) by Paul. The Johanine Epistles were written (or dictated) by the Apostle John or by a companion of the Apostle John. Revelation was written by the Apostle John. Hebrews is ascribed to the Apostle Paul, though its authorship is currently unknown. What is known is that these writings were in wide circulation by the end of the 1st century/ beginning of the second as evidenced by the numerous handwritten copies found in the region. The oldest of which is from the Gospel of John and dates to c. AD 100, a mere handful of years from it's original writing. In all honesty, it is only the uneducated and uniformed who continue to foster the misconceived notion that the Scriptures were written a century or more after the events or written by those who were not witnesses to the events they claim to have witnessed; and even then, onlyn found only within lay adherents to atheism.

Yes, my friend.. This is an important subject, The accuracy of translated Bibles. This is why it is important to own a translinear Bible, examining all the different texts. Different languages use many different forms and have many different meanings for words. There are literal word for word translations and translations that stick to a concept/idea. This by no means makes the Bible not valid because the main message is very simple. It may make a greater understanding of certain things harder.

Message for Christians [Old Testament] * 5 Books of Moses 1. Genesis {Bereishis} - This book is based on the teachings of Moses about the creation and expansion of the human race, and the story of Abraham and his descendants. {Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph}, all of these prophets came before Moses. - The prophets that Moses speaks about are mainly the descendants of Abraham's 2nd Son, Isaac. Not much is spoken about Ishmael {1st son of Abraham} & his descendants. - This is because the Jews, along with Moses himself are descendants of Isaac not Ishmael. - These Jews had basically lost their sense of religion because they were enslaved to the Pharaoh of Egypt for hundreds of years & they were forced to neglect their religion and worship the Pharaoh. Over time the religion of Abraham was basically lost. 2. Exodus - This book is mainly about the life of Moses and how he freed the Israelites from Egypt and began the journey to bring them back to Israel. - It tells about their journey to Mt. Sinai (where Moses receives the Torah from God) and their wanderings in the wilderness. 3. Leviticus - This book is about the laws and teachings of the Torah that was revealed to Moses from God for the children of Israel, along with sayings and teachings that Moses spoke & taught to the children of Israel. 4. Numbers - This book talks about the Israelites wanderings in the desert as they continue towards the land of Israel and how they began to apply the laws of the Torah in their lives. 5. Deuteronomy - This book is about the final years of Moses's life and how the Israelites finally reach the land of Israel to restore their nation. - These teachings & stories that Moses received as revelation from God were not originally written as books, but the Jews passed down these teachings traditionally & orally. Many, many years after, these teachings were collected and written down in narrative book forms in the Hebrew Language. The collection of these 5 books are known as The Pentateuch. - All of this information that Moses spoke & taught about was revealed to Moses from God himself through revelations and Moses thought these revelations to the jews of that time so they can learn about their origins and religion. The name of the revelation given to Moses is 'Torah' and it is organized as a list of commandments. - Over time, The original Torah was not preserved and the governments of Israel began modifying laws of the Torah for their own benefits. They changed, added & subtracted many laws for their own benefits. When the Jews began noticing this, riots and disagreements broke out among them. - Changing or modifying the Laws of the Torah is a major violation in the Torah, but the governments of Israel still did this for their own benefits. - The Messiah was supposed to restore the teachings of the Torah along with the teachings of Moses, so that the Jews can return back to the true religion that God prescribed for them & so peace can be restored among the nation of Israel. However, the jews of Israel were very corrupt, and they wanted to keep their own laws instead of accepting the original laws of the Torah. Even though Jesus matched all of the prophecies that the messiah was supposed to have, The Jews neglected and killed him. Jesus was not actually killed, God raised him back to the heavens. - Today, the 10 Commandments are the only laws that are believed to have not been modified by people. Jews/Christians are still confused about the other 600+ laws contained in The Pentateuch, and they are not sure which of these laws God prescribed and which of these are laws prescribed by people. The original revelation that Moses received from God; The Torah, is corrupted and mixed in with laws prescribed from people. - The people of Israel violated the laws of the Torah that God prescribed for them by corrupting the Torah. Jesus, who was the prophet God sent to restore religion in the nation of Israel was killed (He was not actually killed, God saved him) by the Jews. - God chose the Israelites, who are descendants of Isaac, to spread the religion of Abraham throughout the world. However, the Israelites failed and became a corrupted nation. Things got even worse when a man named Paul basically created Christianity and began to brainwash people in to believing that God has children... Paul also created perverted ideologies like the trinity, 'Jesus died for our sins', and original sin. All of these perverted ideologies are made up by Paul. [New Testament] * Gospels of Jesus - All 4 of these gospels were originally written by unknown authors in Greek & Aramaic languages. - The only way of finding out if the information in these gospels are accurate is by checking with the Qur'an, because the Qur'an is the revelation from God; while these gospels are unauthentic man-made books. - The message or 'good news' that Jesus spoke is called the Evangel. Many parts of the Evangel are unknown to the Christians because Mark, Mathew, Luke & John did not write them in their books. - The message of the Evangel along with the Torah are both contained within the Qur'an. [A little info on the Qur'an] - God promised Abraham that he would make great nations from both of Abraham’s children, Ismail & Isaac. - The descendants of Isaac became corrupt, and they were not worthy of receiving another prophet or revelation because they corrupted the Torah {Revelation} and Killed Jesus {The Prophet}. - God sent his final revelation to the final prophet, who was a descendant from Ismail. The promise that God made with Abraham about creating great nations from both of his sons was now fulfilled. - Instead of sending a revelation in Law Format that can easily be modified by people (Like the Torah), God sent this revelation in a unique poetic format; consisted of 114 Surahs/Poetic Chapters. All of these surahs are easily memorized by people within hours & if someone tries to modify a letter or word from any of these Surahs, a Hafiz, who are people that dedicate their lives in memorizing & preserving the Qur'an easily notice this. Therefore, it is impossible to modify any letter or word from The Qur'an. - The Qur'an is a miraculous Revelation because it was revealed to a prophet who couldn't even read nor write, Muhammad (PBUH). Angel Jibreel used to reveal verses & surahs to Muhammad in the Arabic language that Muhammad spoke. Muhammad easily learned and memorized the entire Qur'an and he would pass it down to all of his companions. They would pass the Qur'an down orally and today their are millions and millions of hafiz who are people that have memorized the entire Qur'an. Eventually, The Qur'an was written down, so it can be sent to countries all across the world that didn't speak Arabic. They sent a Qur'an to each of the major countries around Arabia. One of these contries was Turkey, and that same exact Qur'an is still preserved today in Turkey. - Since the Qur'an is preserved in people's memories it is impossible to get rid of it. Their are over a million people all across the globe who have memorized the entire Qur'an. - God made the Qur'an so that it is preserved in peoples tongues & hearts rather than their brains. Only God can produce such a miraculous amazing poetic revelation like the Qur'an. - The Arabs along with the billions of Muslims living today have not violated God's law to fit their own. - Although, their are a small number of muslims who are becoming corrupt; Al Qaeda & ISIS for example. The Prophet Muhammad prophesied that near the end of times Muslims would begin becoming corrupt and start violating the laws of the Qur'an. This has already begun with groups like ISIS & Al Qaeda, and it is only getting worse now... - It is prophesied that the Messiah, Jesus would return and get people back on the true religion of Islam. Similar, to what he tried doing over 2,000 years ago with the Jews of Israel. - Today, both Jews & Christians are corrupt and violate God's commandments. Jews hate Jesus & Christians associate partners with God {Trinity}. Both Jews & Christians neglect the final prophet Muhammad, along with the final revelation from God; The Noble Qur'an. - The Qur'an is a revelation that addresses the Jews/Christians, Polytheists, Atheists, and the entire mankind/jinn-kind. - The Qur'an is loaded with countless Linguistic, Scientific, Historical & Mathematical Miracles.

There are so many scientific miracles in the Quran that it is beyond an illiterate man like Muhammad to conjure it. If you have an open mind and look beyond the rhetoric and prejudices you'll find that Islam came from god through Muhammad and his greatest miracles is the Quran, a document that has kept its originality since it was revealed 1400 years ago. It suffers from none of the corruption of the bible and contains many miracles that are signs from god the creator of all.

One of the strong points in the original apostolic preaching is the confident appeal to the knowledge of the hearers; they not only said, 'We are witnesses of these things,' but also, 'As you yourselves also know' (Acts 2:2). Matthew. There is both is both internal and external evidence that the Gospel bearing the name Matthew was, in fact (Ehrman knows this), written by Matthew even though the title "According to Matthew" was added in the second century. There are many references to money throughout this Gospel, which one would expect from a tax collector. Moreover, the humility of multiple references to his being a tax collector. His ability as a record keeper is borne out in his recording the long discourses of Jesus. That Matthew is the author of this Gospel is also established by the church Fathers as far back as Papias of Hierapolis (written works published about 130-140 C.E.), also by Justin Martyr, by Hegesippus, Irenaeus, Tatian, Athenagoras, Theophilus, Clement, Tertullian, and Origen.

We know every single man un this chain. Right know I can take approve from Hafez by reading one style of recitation go back until prophet Muhammad pbuh. The problem with you that you lack information about what different mode in recitation, and you do not know any thing about Isnad. You quoted from Bukhari but you do nt understand. Let us imagine that all disciples of Jesus came know and produced one single bible that they herd from Jesus himself , and the commanded you to burn what you have from what so called word of God, then What would you do ? That exactly what happened with us. But what you have is really problem. Bart ehrman mentioned facts you have to deal with instead repeated thng you have know idea about Quran.

Acts 11.26 "...in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians." The second mention of the term follows in Acts 26:28, where Herod Agrippa II (the connection I've already mentioned above) replies to Paul "Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?" The Jewish disciples, if ever, never called their leader in Gentile Greek "Christ" but "Messiah" (here: of the House of David) instead. Okay?

Islamic theology beautifully resolves all of these issues with Christianity. We are the only other large world religion to accept Jesus Christ but Islam clearly explains that he did not preach that he was divine or that people should abandon the law. He was a miracle born to the Virgin Mary whom God can create without male intervention just like God made Adam.

Most atheists' know the bible far better than the majority of Christians, Fact! Hence it is one of many of the reasons that set me on the road towards an agnostic-atheistic life. There is no historical evidence for the resurrection and I have to be honest with myself especially when I'm asked to believe this story because my soul depends on it, I needed to question it. I do not believe in an afterlife, there has never been evidence for it when in theory there should be.
@CyeOutsider

PlntPeace It is literally impossible to prove, historically, the ressurrection of Jesus. Or that Jesus was born of a virgin. Or any of the supernatual stuff attributed to Jesus. These are theological claims and not historical ones and thus it must be believed on faith, not evidence. Christians need to stop pretending that these are provable historical events. They aren't. As Ehrman himself says, the job of historians is to figure out, in the most scholarly manner possible, what *probably* happenned or what is *most likely* to have occured, having properly considered the evidence to hand. Miracles and supernatural events are, almost by definition, the LEAST LIKELY explanation for any kind of event, especially events occuring 2000 years in the past.

By 'the Golden Rule' I mean the ethical proposition that you should treat others as you would wish to be treated, and should not treat others in ways you would not wish to be treated. This ethical proposition (with variants) can be found in many, if not most, developed ethical systems. The technical term 'Golden Rule' to describe this family of ethical propositions is certainly not used in the Torah. But the Torah surely contains ethical propositions of this type.

Indeed. So much for, 'Turn the other cheek,' 'Love your enemy,' 'Do good to those who hate you,' etc. Rather, 'I have a new commandment - do as I say, not as I do!' Incidentally, Luke 19:27 (that's the passage) said nothing about antichrists or people persecuting saints. Jesus was comparing himself to a hypothetical tyrant king and those who were to be 'slain in his sight' were simply those who didn't 'want him to rule over them.' What a guy!

Hi I agree that Pastors do not know where to begin to teach parishioners about the historicity of especially the new testament and it's inconsistencies and contradictions. The right approach would be to begin in Sunday school and stop teaching children aspects of the Bible which have been found to be contradictory or having been mistranlated. Then when they reach their teens then begin to explain to them how some of the stories in the Bible are not as presented and what actually is the right translation of the passage and let them make their own informed decision on whether they accept what is in their particular version of the Bible or the Scholars and Historians have pointed out.

Is your point that these Torah principles are essentially limited in their scope to fellow-clansmen / fellow-tribesmen, while the Golden Rule would be more widespread in scope? This touches on a very interesting issue - how to define the universe of moral concern. However, the said Gospel or Injeel is no longer in existence. Since the original Old & New Testament have been forged and distorted, The Omnipotence Being have revealed the Final Testament, i.e. the Noble Quran thru Prophet Muhammad which comprehend all the divine teachings of all prophets (since Adam). I suggest you read the English translation of the Quran with an open mind. As for me, I've read and studied both the Bible and Quran since my schooling days and came to the conclusion....that the deviation of Prophet Yeshua's teaching began when people (notably the ancient Greek scribes and Saul of Tarsus after Yeshua's ascension) distorted, misquoted and wrote scriptures according to their whims and fancies. They tried to compromise the Greek pagan myth with divinity. Remember.... Jesus, Bible, Christian & Christianity are unknown words/names in the ancient Hebrew & Aramaic vocabulary of the Semitic people in the middle east. Prophet Yeshua (Peace Be Upon Him) who spoke Aramaic, addressed our Creator as ALLAHA which is almost similar to Arabic's ALLAH. All prophets & messengers of God Almighty (since the beginning of our forefather, Adam) had same ultimate teachings, i.e.submission sincerely & wholeheartedly for peace to the One and Only God Almighty. One word for this in Arabic language is ISLAM (SHALOM in Hebrew); and mind you...... both are Semitic language. Good Day & Regards.

If God/Allah wants me to believe the Quran, or the Bible, or any other book, then why does he not tell me such himself? Surely Allah knows that men corrupt things, he knows that the New Testament has been corrupted, so how does he expect me to think any different of the Quran? Why does Allah expect me to believe Mohammad, a man that I never met? Why does God want me to put my faith in men like Mohammad, Moses Jesus or any other prophet? I don't trust men. SO what? Am I condemned because I don't trust the men who wrote the Bible and/or Quran? Also, how did men corrupt the injeel? Was God not powerful enough to protect the Injeel/New Testament from the corruption of men? If God/Allah didn't protect the Injeel, then maybe he won't/can't protect the Quran.

The Qur'an on the other hand directs man to use his mind and than duduce and conclude that the universe had to have a Creator.

what is free thinking your definition? Islam is based upon enlightened thought, always was and always will be. Democracy is hypocrisy always was and always will be. Capitalism is corrupt , the definition of greed. Bet you didn't know, that Islamic scholars translated the Greek concepts because they were lost to Europe after the fall of Rome civilization. Also, the names of the stars are in Arabic, Arabic numerals are what we use today, Algebra, algorithms etc all Islamic.

B. White "Also, the names of the stars are in Arabic, Arabic numerals are what we use today, Algebra, algorithms etc all Islamic." Indeed, the Muslim world was very technologically and scientifically advanced, and there was a lot of culture trade between neighboring nations. Also, it were the Muslim preachers *themselves* who then claimed numbers and sciences to be evil and against Allah, and brought the whole scientific and cultural advance to a cruel grinding halt. Interestingly enough, science constantly shows us the complete, absolute lack of any single shred or shadow of evidence that there is any such a thing as a "creator". I wonder if those two facts are somehow connected?

Fernie Canto I think your just full of your self or you just do not know what your talking about. Western thought is totally based upon scientific thinking, it is why the west is based and stuck in materialism, Yes the door of ijtihad was closed and scholars did make mistakes about their understanding and how to look at new things. Today the islamic intellectuals have combed through western thought and see its failings and saw that its idols, and gods are false. God is one and He only he is real and everything else is created (temporal).

Bart addresses a question I've often wondered about. Pastors know that their congregations have many misconceptions about the scripture they read to them each week. Not that these misconceptions are secrets, but most churchgoers never encounter most of them; so they are, effectively, being lied to. An obvious example is the authorship of the Gospels. I'm guessing that most believers assume that they were written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, in the form they see in their Bibles, and are historically accurate. The pastor knows different, but keeps it to himself. It seems that Bart, like me, can only speculate about the reason(s).

Of course, exactly right. There's a reason why up until a couple hundred years ago, commoners or serfs as they were referred as, weren't allowed an education of any sort that would enable them to be able to read or write or think for themselves. It was only religious leaders and the aristocracy on all levels that were educated and they told the people what to believe and what to do, what to wear, what to eat or else be punished. Religion started to lose it's gripping monopoly of power and control over people when people started to be able to get an education and learn and THINK for themselves. Most people though don't realize the discrepancies between the 4 gospels because they are not reading them side by side and comparing and understanding the mistakes of the anonymous authors of those books.

Bart Ehrman claims the Bible doesn't claim Jesus' divinity until John. What about Mark 14:62-63? "62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?" Jesus claims to be the SON OF MAN. In the Old Testament the SON OF MAN coming on the clouds of heaven is a reference to a Divine being. Jesus is claiming to be God. For proof just look at what the priest did when he heard Jesus say this. HE TORE HIS GARMENTS and sentenced him to death. Only claiming to be God would warrant such a reaction. Or how about Luke 19 and the Parable of the Ten Minas. Jesus tells of a king leaving his kingdom and subjects and then returning to pass judgement on the ones who He had entrusted with his wealth. This is a CLEAR reference to Jesus dying, going to be with His Father in heaven and then returning on Judgement day. How many mere mortals say after they die they will return to Earth to pass Judgement on all of humanity, saving the righteous and throwing the rest into the hell fire? I don't know anyone like that. :-) Maybe Bart does......LOL. Bart Ehrman for being a professor of Religion is missing an awful lot about Religion. Mark is supposedly the earliest Gospel so it's even more offensive that Bart Ehrman would ignore it and claim Jesus' divinity didn't come till far later.

***** "Jesus scolds him for calling him "good".....a clear indication that Jesus is not God".....God entered His creation as Jesus Christ. Jesus has to keep reminding people of that fact. This is just one of many examples. Jesus alone is not God in His entirety. Jesus is but a human interface TO God. But Jesus is still God entered into Creation as a mere Human. This conclusion is inescapable. The New Testament literally drips with Jesus' divinity. To wit, Luke 19. "Luke 19..... still does not imply that Jesus is God".....Do you know any mere mortals who say after they die they will return to Earth and Judge humanity? I don't. Maybe Bart Ehrman does. And you aren't allow the "Messiah" defense here. Messiah just means "Anointed One", nothing Divine. Finally you make a lot of assumptions about time and what is published when. None of that is known. Exact dates are not known, they are just theories no matter how many times Bart Ehrman repeats them in his crusade to kill Christianity. :-) (kill Christianity? yeah, i know. kind of makes you go hhmmm).

***** "I think he's at least trying to be objective.".....My friend, Bart Ehrman is very bitter at the Christian faith. Bart Ehrman went to Seminary and was about to devote his entire life to Christ. He began to lose his faith based on his Literalism but also the fact that Christian Seminarians in the Bible Belt tend to be a pretty Conservative bunch. Bart is not a Conservative. In fact he HATES the Tea Party. Bart Ehrman's loss of faith has as much to do with his Literalism as his political leanings. In other words at some point Bart said to himself "If I keep believing in Christ I'll be agreeing with the "Tea Baggers", so something must be wrong somewhere." .....Of course at that time the Tea Party didn't exist but you get the idea. Bart is no Conservative and Bible Belt Christianity almost demands you be one. Bart rebelled and he's spent the rest of his career trying to make Conservative Christians look bad. It's as plain as day to me. I'm amazed you can't see it.

Thank you for this comment. I have been puzzled by the claim that there were some early Christians who believed there were 365 gods. If there were any people in the first century CE who described themselves as Christian and yet stated they believed there were 365 gods they would not I think have been among Jesus' original disciples and followers. Jesus and his disciples were all brought up in a Jewish religious tradition which was fairly emphatically monotheistic,

This charge of forgery in relation to the letters of Peter, based on Peter's illiteracy, is wholly absurd. As Professor Ehrman has himself noted - in the ancient world it was common to dictate letters. When someone dictates a letter, it remains his letter. The blind Milton dictated Paradise Lost - the poem remains Milton's poem. Even if Peter were illiterate, he could have dictated letters,- and these would remain his letters.

These mega churches are run by corporations and tell their employee( your pastor )what he is or is not to preach about. If you keep the entertainment level up and skip some difficult scriptures you get more butts in the seats and more money in the offering plate. Despite that, my biggest concern, is did Jesus really say what is attributed to him saying? like john14:13? (Whatever you ask I will do.) where (even 1% ) do people go to a specific church to be healed? No where.

The problem is because most of these hadiths are false. I reject all hadiths even if some maybe true, but since so many are derogatory and just simply silly, nothing can be credible in these books. Reason for most muslims who follow and read these silly books, steer them in wrong direction. It's why islam has the image it does today. These hadiths and teachings or illustrations are destroying the religion of islam, just like a lot do to christianity and judaism. All beautiful religions and being destroyed by men who love hate and love even more to spread it. All the prophets had God's message, men twisted their words and re wrote the history that benefitted them, about how they were. It's like the ones who say islam is evil and mohammad was bad etc and it's a devils cult and all false and fake mohammadism and barbaric nature and it's made up and so on... then they say this is why : and start copy pasting all the hadiths and illustrations, who were written by the same people, who destroyed the religion, had hand in his family's death, and use all the writings from most of these cruel dictators or caliphs and say you see! they use the terrorists material, to prove why islam is terrorism, and not the terrorists who aren't muslim, because the religion is fake and made up and we use fake material for proof! Haha :P Hypocrisy at its finest! They do the same to all religions. I say believe what you want, and love what you love and stop hating on what you don't like or at least stop spreading the hate, because we have enough of that. This discussion is on what it's on, let's not bring anything else into it, let's just listen, and either agree or disagree but don't spread hate. Respect and peace

Sahih Bukhari, and Sahih Muslim are the gold standard for hadith. These sources are the MOST reliable. These are not fringe hadith, nor are there any serious scholars who reject Sahih Bukhari or Sahih Muslim. Qur'an only muslims are universally rejected so making a distinction that it's hadith and not Qur'an is meaningless since authentic hadith, like Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, are binding. There are plenty of things that are Sunna yet not in the Qur'an.

I don't see a discrepancy between Matthew and Paul. In Matthew it says he's not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Not one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, TILL all be fulfilled The law wasn't fulfilled until Jesus's death and resurrection. To follow the law TILL it is fulfilled is saying the law necessarily is changed once Jesus has fulfilled it, thus Paul's lack of concern with the law. It's been fulfilled, it holds no more sway.

I would guess more conservative churches don't talk much about it as people don't really want to hear it.
