My step dad always sang this song to me when I was little. Even when I was a older teenager I would ask him to sing it. He had such a beautiful voice. He died in 2016. This song brings back so many memories. I miss him dearly and if he was still here with us I would have him to sing it.

Aww, that is sweet. I used to play this on an old #45 all the time... Dad used to sing to me too. Whenever we went to town, or on vacation trips. Dad passed in 2022 at the age of 94.

My dad was dying in a hospice in the same hospice Peter Yarrows Mom was dying. My son was six months old. Peter came in to visit his mom and sang this song to all there. He came over to me and asked to hold my son and sang to him and us this song. I was in tears and honored. My dad died shortly after that and forever I am grateful for this. I had just been homeless for to years and got sober. It was the beginning of a new life. What a gift🙏❤️🔮🦋🙏

It's impossible for me to listen to the 3rd verse without ugly crying at the end. This song will forever hold a special place in my heart. My son was born Thanksgiving weekend, and while we were recovering that night at the hospital, they had a Peter, Paul & Mary Christmas Special on TV where they played this song. My boy was so tiny, only a few hours old, and was facing multiple surgeries due to a birth defect we had discovered. I cradled his tiny body signing to him as PP&M sang along on the TV. I prayed that he would stay young and innocent as long as he could as I wept over him. Fast forward to now: my -21-year old son, towers over me at nearly 6'3" and is as strong as an ox. He is moving out to complete his college degree in a week. And I'm back again to being a bawling mess as I let him go and he spreads his wings. Time flies so very fast and I cherish every moment I've had.

Rest in peace to Zoe and Dana Falkenberg, who were some of the youngest victims of the 9/11 attacks 22 years ago. Zoe was 8 years old and Dana was 3. They, along with their parents, were sadly on board one of the planes that was hijacked that day. Puff the Magic Dragon was reportedly a song that the girls would sing with their parents before bed. So this song has always made me think of them ever since I learned that. Rest in peace to them and all of the other 9/11 victims.

Apparently there was an additional final where Puff becomes the imaginary friend of a different child. Unfortunatly that verse was left on the type writer and has since been lost to the midst of time... (A similar problem happened with Elton John's "Daniel"...)

It can be about drugs. An adult using drugs and regressing into a magic land and then loses it when he/she gradually sobers. I personally think it is about a child growing up and getting out of innocence, but I can see the hallucination angle too.

It was about a dragon. It's based on an earlier children's poem Custard the Dragon, apparently. It seems to be about a toy dragon whose friend, the little boy, eventually grows up and stops playing with the toy and imagining all kinds of adventures. Of course, that leaves out the next generation. The "drug" interpretation is just a bunch of degenerates twisting a touching song about childhood nostalgia into something to do with their drug obsession.
