Peter Pears sings "Deeper and deeper still... Waft her, angels, through the skies"

Here is the great British tenor Peter Pears (1910-1986) singing Jephtha's prayer from Act III of Handel's oratorio believed to have been performed in the mid-to-late 1970's. The orchestra and venue are unknown.

Not really, though McKellar is fine he is not on the same level as Richard Lewis or even old Jan Peerce . Pearce late seventies…. he was in his sixties then, not bad for an aging singer. Not crazy about the conducting or the mediocre orchestral playing

1. Pears (not Pearce) is well below all of these other gentlemen. Not sure why he ever even got to record, besides having sexual relations with a famous composer, whose pedophilia he encouraged. 2. I'd take McKellar over Lewis any day. Lewis is a bigger voice, but it is cumbersome and sluggish in Handel, and there is a deeply unpleasant throatiness in the high notes. He also is not a sensitive interpreter. Peerce is obviously a first-rate operatic singer, unlike any of the others. He's in a different league. Bigger than the others, but still more agile. Much more focused vibrato. That said, Peerce is a decidedly monochromatic interpreter, unlike McKellar, whose delightful shadings make his Handelian recordings more competitive than his limited vocal means would normally allow.@@operanostalgia3820
