The brilliance of it is that Peter isn’t really making a wrong decision here. He is right when he says that he can’t spend his life living another person’s dream. Which is why the rest of the movie is about him finding HIS OWN reason for wanting to be Spider-Man. The old Spidey, the one driven by pain and guilt, is indeed “no more”, never to be seen again. When Peter chooses to don the suit again, his decision is not driven by self loathing, it is driven by love.

When this first came out when I was 5, I didn’t understand why he lost his powers I thought he ran out of webs but as a 22 year old man, I started to relate to this movie a lot especially the character that is Peter from the comics to this movie. Physical health is important but if what’s up there isn’t functioning well, the rest that is physical won’t do well, he was clearly depressed/anxious from the things happening all around him, from losing his best-friend due to Spider-Man, losing the love of his life because of Spider-Man and the fear of endangering the ones he loves because of Spider-Man, the character that is Peter Parker was, in my opinion, portrayed well in this movie. One thing I’ve learned from Spider-Man especially this movie is that life is all about choices and sometimes we’ll have to let go of what made us comfortable, safe or feel good in order to grow.

While he's sad that Peter doesn't want to continue being a hero part of him is happy that Peter is making his own choice on his current situation. As kids, we saw Spider-Man running out of webs. But as adults, we see a man going through an existential crisis. Spider-Man didn’t “lose” his powers; they were always there but the reason why they weren’t working is because Peter’s mental wellbeing wasn’t there. He was tired of being Spider-Man, he was falling behind in school, and the love of his life was marrying another man. The lesson here is that living a double-life isn’t healthy. You have to make a choice; we always have a choice. In the end, Peter learned to accept that he was Spider-Man. ❤

Peter lost everything that was important to him. He lost his powers, Harry was not his friend anymore, and his girlfriend got engaged to another man. So now, Peter has nothing: no powers, no responsibility, no friendship, and no love.

My head cannon for the doctor scene is that he knew Peter was Spider-Man after telling him, but played along with the "dream" excuse so that he wouldn't add anymore stress to Peter's life.

Danny Elfman’s music for this was absolutely robbed of an Oscar nomination. I would also argue Spider-Man 2 should have been nominated for Best Picture. All these years later & it’s hard to believe this wasn’t considered a top 5 movie of 2004.
