Was looking for Tim O'Brien on either Mandolin or Guitar - finally found him in the shadows on Fiddle. HE is a real wizard as well . . .

Tony Rice seems otherworldly sometimes. So fluid and every second is packed with complex note structure. A true gift and a reference for all acoustic guitar players.

What a fine rendition of this song by a handful of the masters of several genres. Tony's voice had long gone but his picking remained legendary to the end.

The pure joy Tony gets out of hearing that fiddle solo from the 2:10 mark to 2:40 mark!!! He yells YEA MAN!! a few times throughout. That’s what music is all about, bringing joy. To think after all the times he has played that tune and with The Who’s who of players he’s played with, a great fiddle solo still gets him excited!! Love it

This is definitely one of the BEST versions you will EVER hear. Love the sound of that old Martin and the one and only Tony Rice playing it!

Listening to Shady Grove is like visiting an old friend. Tony Rice opens the door to this familiar house and welcomes you inside. Then the other musicians come and shake your hand warmly and the party begins. You start to move with the rhythm and the guitarists take turns dancing with you. The mandolin is giddy like a jolly drunken fool and gives you some of his moonshine to drink and now you’re in heaven, then the violin pulls you by the elbow and spins you around while leading you back to the guitarists and Tony Rice is there to bring you back to earth, slowing down the dance as he leads you out the door but not before giving you one last hug with his guitar. But you wish this party could go on forever.

There aren't enough thumbs-up to express how much I love this. The looks on Tony's face throughout the video are priceless. I've loved this arrangement of Shady Grove since the Quartet album was released, but for some reason I only discovered this video now. Thanks so much for posting.

Tony's adaptation of traditional song structure opened a gate and created a path and that others still walk today. The audience "gets it" and respond in such a positive way that other musicians are afforded the luxury of experimentation in the acoustic world. Amazing.

I was only 5 - 10 miles away from this event when it took place... unbeknownst to me that it was underway. Without undue arrogance, I've always considered myself one of Tony's biggest fans but his venue slipped thru the cracks and I reckon I wanted to cry but it sure made me mad that I missed out on it. Tony -- if you ever chime in on any of this -- we sure miss you... Best wishes... Mike from Fredericksburg.

Peter Rowan is one of the best bluegrass vocalists, but I fail to understand why he even takes an instrument on stage. He is pathetic on the guitar. And lazy.
