Hearing your rant is absolutely heartbreaking. You cared so much about these books. I mean, I understand, you're a book-reviewer. How could you have had hope after even seeing the trailers? Maybe we got a different advert in the US, but as soon as I saw them, I wrote it off to never be seen. I'm terribly sorry that the movie ripped your heart apart and you had the courage to stand in that movie and let it do that to you. :c

'They exploited the story of Peter Rabbit, without bothering to understand the people and culture and landscape those books came out of.' As an American, this sounds like an incredibly American thing to do. Hollywood even butchers our own books this way. As for why James Corden... he's popular now. He's a treat for the parents who feel forced or obliged to bring their kids to this movie, and probably one of the few English persons who is popular enough over here that we can recognize his voice. That would also be why they didn't change his accent, we wouldn't be able to recognize him as easily that way. And another thing, any movie that uses pop songs that are popular right now is a blatant cash-grab. It will be painfully dated in two years or less, they just want whatever they can get for it now before they move onto the next thing.

The moment I saw the trailer I made myself a promise: I would never, ever see this move, so that it couldn't mar my love for Beatrix Potter's stories. I don't consider adaptations part of a story's canon anyway, but this one in particular seemed like an awkward, undisguised money-grab. I came close to breaking that promise... and then this video appeared in my sub box. Thank you for making it!

my brothers gf saw the trailer and wanted to see it, she said she read the stories when she was little and it took... a lot of willpower to keep my mouth shut and try to look bland and be polite. I already know we dont have the same interests when it comes to content. "am i staring hatefully and full of disgust now? i cant tell, shit". I was horrified. You dont *DO* that to gentle childhood characters that only ever belonged to one person. You can pull the "new and cool with the kids" shit with something as prevalent and part of the zeitgiest as gnomes or emojis or the easter bunny. But you cant do that with a beloved character. That would be like doing that to Winnie the Pooh, or Totoro, or Sailor moon. Or other sweet beloved characters from books! or The Velveteen Rabbit!!! the catepilliar...gumby...bambi...frosty the snowman.

In many ways I feel your pain. I hope the process was cathartic. The most recent frustrating example I had was the adaptation of Ghost in the Shell (2017) when you consider The Arrival (2016) & Annihilation (2018). Same studio, but not the same trust or courage the audience would be there for quality science fiction. Please don't ever allow the length of time needed to examine a topic keep you from uploading quality analysis as this. We need pedantic examination often to see where things go wrong, and we need the decision makers to see we have lost our tollance for garbage fires. You & Jordan are doing inspired work... GRATITUDE

Hello fellow Northerner! Thanks for all the background, I honestly hadn’t even known that her books were from Cumbria, which I probably should have since I’ve always lived visiting my grandma who lives there. I am really sick of all the snobishness that goes on, it just makes me think of Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. Thanks for bringing the matter up, bc this video’s been super informative, and now I know not to watch the film, and you’ve given me inspiration to try and work Beatrix Potter’s message and similar into my own work

First I just want to say I just stumbled upon your channel last night and am loving it (all the stuff you said about The Mortal Instruments was so true and I'm glad someone finally said something, I couldn't even get through the 2nd book i was so confused). Second I wanted to thank you for confirming my fears about this movie without me having to see it. When I first saw the trailer I didn't even realize it was supposed to be Peter Rabbit, I was just "oh great another crappy animated rabbit film, Nope". I think it was the 2nd time it hit me and then it became "oh they did NOT do that to Peter Rabbit". I can confirm as an American that we do know the original Peter Rabbit and most people I know love it. While it might not be as pronounced as British love for it, it holds an important part in a lot of our childhood here too. Unfortunately Hollywood likes to twist everything in a transparent and disturbing attempt to cash in. They also seem have a disturbing lack of moral compass. I mean explosions? in Peter Rabbit? How did anyone even come up with that, let alone think it was a good idea? *infuriated sign* anyway, thanks for the review it was a lot of fun to listen to and I'm on to the 2nd part. I hope you'll be finishing your Mortal Instruments reviews, I LOVE them. Good luck with your channel!!! P.s. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there’s this weird trend of having a live action film with a CGI rabbit as a main character pop up every 5 years or so, no other comments just think it’s an odd trend, especially as they tend to crash and burn.

Wow! Great analysis! I had watched the trailer and had two reactions: The first was "Ugh!" And the second "Why is Peter Rabbit an action flick set in Sussex???" I guess I got my answer! I think the trouble is with an unwillness or inability (on the part of producers, directors, writers, or just studio heads) to understand the source material.

Very good review. I've never read the books (aside from a single thin book I kept from when I was younger) or watched the movie aside from the ads (which I didn't much like) and actually felt disturbed by them. I then told myself that the film was going to be another mean spirited film created for the sake of money. Whenever someone on TV was talking about movies they'd either praise Peter Rabbit or not talk about it. Then at some point this one show spoke to a mother who took her son, who she (or he himself as I forget if he took part in the interview at all) said he loved the books, to see it without researching it because she figured it would be harmless. She told of how her son started crying scared of Peter after a bit, especially after Peter apparently threw berries (I forget now what she said in the interview) at the farmer guy, caused him an allergic reaction and thought it was funny while the farmer guy was trying to find his ebypin. The mother said her son has sever food allergies and how she couldn't believe they did that in the movie. I think she also called it insulting towards anyone with serious allergies, stating (I could be recalling this line wrong as its been a while since that short interview) that serious allergies are not something there to be made into a joke for sh*ts and giggles. I have a lot of allergies, some of which fall under high or sever, and I agreed with her. I shook my head at her telling of that scene because if someone's allergic to something and starts having a reaction to where they could die, you don't laugh at them as they try to find the one device to use to slow down the reaction so they have time to get to be checked out by an ER doctor for further treatment as needed to ensure they don't die. There's a lot of movies I see advertised and it's rare to none that ever in recent years make me think "That looks good. I wanna see that when it's on DVD" because nearly everything is just so disturbing, at least to me it feels disturbing because their ads cause my stomach to feel like it's twisting and I just feel greatly uneasy/nervous towards it. Maybe I'm just not a huge movie person but I wish movie makers actually gave half a crap about what they were producing. I have watched and own several DVD movies but most of those come from around the 90's or early 2000's. I think the only movies I've enjoyed in recent years has been MLP because they've been entertaining, kept me curious how the end result gonna be resolved (even though already know good always wins) and didn't make me feel like they were being mean spirited just to get money, even though I know the point of MLP is to sell toys I haven't noticed a mean spirit behind it as I have with most Hollywood movies in the mid 2000's to current time.

The movie was produced by Hollywood, by a combination of American and Australian companies. There was literally no hope they would even vaguely try to recreate the cultural milieu rather than just shit out a quick cash grab. We're lucky that the accents were even vaguely within the UK and not Australian or something with the logic of: 'no one outside of the UK will know the difference or care about it'. You're allowed to hate American movies; I'm American and the way the industry has been for a long time now has bleached any sense of respect for it right out of my brain. It's part of why I never pursued a career in film; I saw how shit the movies had become and how commercialized it was and was like 'nope, no thank you, I couldn't stand being ashamed of myself for the associations I would form.' If nothing else, the Fifty Shades series should be an indication that the US movie industry has officially sold any integrity it ever might have had in the name of making a quick buck. I read the Peter Rabbit books as a child because I was generally a book reader and I was attracted to the art style. Just hearing what they've done with it second hand is enough to convince me not to watch this garbage if it came on for free on TV or on an airplane during a flight. Now, looking at the art on the animation, it occurs to me that they didn't even get that correct about the movie; there's a superficial impression from stills that it might be close enough, but as soon as there's a more dynamic pose to the characters, it is immediately obvious that there is a huge deviation between the style and tone of the books vs. the movie. Hollywood garbage, the infinite grab-bag of hungry pockets. Why the hell people even give movies a chance anymore is so far beyond me I can't even begin to imagine why people still bother to watch movies from Hollywood anymore.

Enasni Ec-neicsnoc completely agree, there is still the occasional good movie which comes out of Hollywood, but from what I’m seeing they’re getting fewer and fewer. I feel bad for all the genuine people in the industry with genuine passion and genuine talent who want to make something good but find it difficult at every step because the money men have all the power and, well, don’t seem to care about the quality. A few reasons. People have TV shows for their in depth stories. Hollywood won't take the hint from that. People don't have as many serial television shows so they just want to get on board with the latest most hyped movie to stay relevant. And people want to know exactly what to expect and just "shut their brain off" or fall asleep during a movie. If it's somehow too complicated or doesn't follow any trope plots they can't follow it. It's "reliable" and reliable "makes money" (yea okay).

(Here via Jordan's video.) "all the rabbits of England weep" Aw, I loved that. I saw the trailer and it looked so mean spirited and cynical. From all you said here , it's even worse than I thought. How sad that this is what kids are given today! I didn't grow up with the books, so I don't have the memories/emotional connection associated with it. But I know how it feels to have a childhood favorite ruined like that. What a shame that Hollywood no longer remembers how to create the magic it once did. Thanks also for the North vs. South issue. As an American, I didn't know all of that. It seems the way those in the South there see/treat the North is a bit parallel to the way the North in America sees/ treats the South. Or maybe more accurately, the way the E & W coasts treat "Flyover Country." (The rest of us peons who aren't classy enough / cool enough to live in NY or LA.)

I've become pretty good at spotting a bad movie based on the previews, so I stayed far away. Honestly I don't go to the movies anymore unless someone's gone before and can vouch for a film. Beatrix Potter has been my all time favorite author growing up to the point that in my late teens I asked for the complete set of her books as a Birthday gift, because I could never grow out of them. Being American I didn't really realize the difference between the north and south and their attitudes, but if I had been making a film based on the lake district I would have done the research, visited the place, and filmed on location. Seems like it would be more expensive to go all the way to Australia. But I guess after the Lord of the Rings everything's got to be filmed halfway around the world.

The Authentic Observer If you're wondering, the reason most of it was filmed in Australia was because the studio that did the CGI on the rabbits is located there. Not that it changed the movie's quality, mind. The fact it was also produced by Sony, best known for the infamous Emoji Movie, still gives me shivers. They clearly only had the excuse of it being "it's just a kids movie" in their hands so they could get away with it being badly done, along with ALL that money in their pockets.

This video popped up in my recommended and I after viewing this, happy that it did. First off I have no childhood love for Peter Rabbit (I never had the books as a kid, not that I thought they were bad and didn't want to read them or anything.) and yet I am even getting annoyed at how badly they adapted and disrespected the source material. This is often how I feel a lot with so many comic book films/shows/cartoons now a days doing things different for no other reason than just why not. I love comics the same way I feel how you love books, and I sincerely can relate to this so much. You can hear in your voice just how much you genuinely didn't like it, and its fantastic. Just a high quality video and opinion all around, I look forward to now watching your how you would fix it video. I was put off almost entirely simply by the casting of James Corden. I can only cope with him for about 10min chunks. I do a weekly visit to the cinema and nearly saw this. Thankfully I convinced my friend to see Isle of Dogs instead, I think I made the right choice. Also, it's interesting how you talk about the North/South divide. As a Highlander, I observe the same thing in Scotland too. It's kind of funny because it feels like a North/South divide within a North/South divide. In media, you struggle to get Highlanders with Highland accents, something that always infuriates me.

The idea that there's different accents in Scotland is really baffling to anyone outside of Scotland or that it has different areas at all. I guess Lazyness plays a part as well. I live in South Scotland, after moving from the Central Belt, I don't know if you mean South of the Highlands or the actual South of Scotland but the actual South of Scotland is bloody weird in the way they see themselves. Like for some reason they all go to Carslie even if they actually closer to Glasgow and I had a friend (not friends now) that had real prejudice against Scotland despite being half Scottish herself. Most of her stuff was aimed at CB and I've never heard anyone say bad stuff about the Highlands (except that weird sheep stuff about Aberdeen) but I know the Highlands get a raw deal sometimes. I agree with that there's definitely a divide within a divide.

The first thing I'd heard about this movie was when friends were warning about a bullying scene where the victim has a food allergy and gets picked on and bullied for it... I know a lot of people (mostly children) with life threatening allergies and I myself have allergies, though not severe they are still very painful and mess with me mentally... So for them seeing another person with an allergy be bullied because of it would really hurt them then help them because they already get that themselves... I haven't seen the movie and hadn't had any intentions after hearing that and seeing the previews, but if that is in it, and all the things you've mentioned in this video about the movie... I'm sorry for the families that go in unknowing this who will face a shock and the people who love and enjoy Peter Rabbit and see Peter The Evil Rabbit instead. :/ Also wanted to mention everything you said from 15:00 to 17:00 (i believe) talking about the character growth (or lack of) in Peter and what should and normally does in characters like his where great! I had to write that down because you said it very well, I was stuck on something before and though i knew all this it was the way you worded it that just helped me break through all the parts i was stuck at. And thanks for mentioning and explaining the North and South differences because otherwise I wouldn't have known.

I absolutely adored Peter Rabbit as a child. In primary school after learning how to read Peter Rabbit was what you graduated to, they were such endearing and lovely stories. Whenever we would go for a picnic in the country I would take them along with me and try to imagine the story in the place I was in. It really is a shame that these lovely stories about a mischievous yet lovable rabbit are being turned into a slapstick comedy for garnering cheap laughs. It would break Beatrix Potter's heart if she saw what was to become of her work. Instead of it being Peter Rabbit adorable children's book character it's Peter Rabbit the hangover version

In America on the channel Nick Junior there is a Peter Rabbit cartoon. It is far more respectful of the source material than this movie. My son and I enjoy the cartoon, and it lead me to by a collection of the books. Each book seems like it could be a plot summary for that show. So you can imagine my delight when I heard there was going to be a film. I thought it was going to be by the same people. I wanted to take my son to see it, but after reading a plot summary online decided it was better to just ignore it. I completely agree with you on the movie. And while the cartoon I mentioned might have its problems, you can tell the creators tried, unlike the people behind this trash heap of a film.

I remember the complaints thing too but I feel life of me honestly tell you if that was put in before or after the allergies controversy because in the trailer for the movie there was a thing about Thomas being allergic to some kind of berries and then them pelting him with berries that he's allergic to in hopes that he'll go into anaphylactic shock and then they have that words like oh yeah allergies are really serious and then they proceed with the scene of them throwing the berries that he's allergic to at him and one going into his mouth and him just barely saving himself with an EpiPen so yeah

You can tell from the poster. There used to be a billboard in the US advertising a water park, and the prepubescent kid in the water clothes was reclining in a floating rubber tube with a look of unbelievable arrogance and hubris, like the rabbit in the movie poster. In the future, you will see such things and never get past the poster.

I’m not from the UK but I grew up on Beatrix potter, and she’s such a big reference to me when I do art. In Mexico where I live there is the same stigma, Sadly. Mexico city is in the south, and they think they are the center of everything. The government provides so many opportunities there and they see people from the north as uncultured, simple, incestuous cowboys which..... was fun when I moved to Mexico City for college :/

I can't be bothered to watch this film; the trailer was bad, and your summary just confirms my suspicions. As for how to fix it, I wonder whether a) making in an anthology film, with many stories all connected by location, theme, and narrator, similar to the "World of Beatrix Potter" and b) setting it in Victorian times; could have helped a lot.

To be fair, Hollywood also sterilizes most of the American countryside as well. Everything not in California or New York gets generally treated as "flyover country" by most of the coastal people, even though there are very distinct regional differences. I really enjoyed and appreciated your explanation of the regional differences in your country as well. As an American, I had no idea.

As far as Hollywood caring, it's not so much that they think that London is the only important part of England.... That's where you're a little confused. It's not that they think that the North is unimportant, but that London is all of England. Any one Englishman can be swapped out for another, because American Audiences won't know the difference.

Julathegreat unfortunately I think you’re right. It’s a shame because I think there’s a lot more variety in Britain than the movie industry seems to believe. We’re a small island, yes, but a very old one with a complex variety of histories, people and events, with each area being immensely different in culture. As well as the ancient Britons we’ve had vikings, Romans and more settle here, and the remnants of their cultures appear to different extents depending on where you are in the country! Yes there’s an overall “British culture”, but each area also has their own distinct identity defined by a unique history extending back centuries. Hollywood could use this, there’s so much interesting stuff here! Sorry for the rant haha but this really gets on my nerves!

Julathegreat I don't agree with this statement. I'd look at is as the same way you guys see America. If you were to make an American film would you place it in LA where everyone in your country is familiar with or would you place it in Jackson, Kentucky where no one has heard of it unless they actually live there? We know that there are other places in England but a movie is going to make more money if the setting is a place that people from a wider demographic are familiar with. Would you say that any one American could be switched out for another? I know that we are a much bigger country so a few accents stand out but so do the English ones. So that sounds pretty ignorant that you would just assume that Americans are too stupid to know that there are different regions in another country that sound different (we literally have different accents in almost every state over here so why wouldn't it be the same in other countries) I know that sounded a little mean but I didn't know how else to word it; your comment infers that Americans are stupid whether you mean it to come off that way or not. I don't agree with this next sentiment but it is a stereotype over here and the reason for the casting choices = the southern English accent is seen as sexy/posh/elegant etc while the northern English accent is seen as not... I know the same could be said for over here as well. Our southern accent brings forth a few instant stereotypes about its people i.e. slow/stupid/racist. Just throwing you an American's perspective. We aren't all stupid despite that stereotype about us...
@Julathegreat
@Julathegreat 6 жыл бұрын
Caroline Cole I get what you're saying. While I ended that comment with "because American audiences won't know the difference," I was meaning to infer more indifference from the entertainment industry and Hollywood's perspective of their audience rather than citing that all Americans are ignorant. However, as an American who has never been to England, I would in truth not be able to tell you where various English accents come from. I know the name and location of the "cockney" accent and that's it. Imagine though if a studio was locaterd in Europe and they decided to make a movie that took place in "America". If they made the setting Los Angeles and cast a bunch of New Yorkers, do you think folks in Denmark would notice or care?
@carolinedixon5913
@carolinedixon5913 6 жыл бұрын
Julathegreat I think you chose the wrong the cities because the New York accent is actually really well known around the world. So I don't think that they would know the difference if someone from Pennsylvania played a person in LA. My point was more along the lines of there are a few main accents for both countries that people know. Each accent hold certain stereotypes that are kind of universal. Studios are going to pick the accent that gives the feel that they are going for or are more openly received around the world.
@Julathegreat
@Julathegreat 6 жыл бұрын
I get your point, but let me make another example then. Let's say this same hypothetical studio sets a movie in Los Angeles and trying to pass of actors as Los Angelian, and they have the actors call a Carbonated soft drink "Pop" instead of "Soda". Literally every American will roll their eyes, but I don't think any Joe Schmo overseas will even blink at it. So I think that's what I'm kinda getting at - American movie studios decided that Americans will assume that all English accents are the same, and so there's no point in trying to get things "Authentic", as long as it feels "English".... because the american studio that produced this swill don't give a dang.

As someone who was born and grew up on the south coast I just wanted to say that London seemed a different beast for me as well. I am well aware of the "southern nancies / northern yobs" tropes, but regional tribalism has been around since before Rome discovered Britain. As for James Corden being cast - that is almost certainly because he is known (and possibly even popular) in America, so they were aiming to make it more popular there.

This might be an American/English thing. I've noticed that English humor often falls flat over here in the states and vice-versa. My kids (3-year-old twins) loved the movie and ask for it regularly. They love the music and all the action scenes. They also love all the cartoons of Popeye and Bugs Bunny when the characters beat on each other, so I'm not surprised they loved Peter Rabbit too. Come to think of it, even those old cartoons are pretty violent--I guess you don't notice these things when it's a cartoon, and Peter Rabbit looked close enough to real to be disturbing in that way. I agree that there were no character arcs and that Peter is a sociopath, but most of the humor hit home and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I felt it had a more kid-friendly Deadpool vibe with the odd pointing out of character flaws and other soft 4th-wall breakages. My biggest gripe was that Bea kept saying that the garden should be opened and the gardeners should work to help feed the rabbits because the land belongs to them too, and they were hungry and should be allowed to feed themselves... yet she never bothered to grow any vegetables herself for the wildlife, she just wanted him to use his labor and donate his food that he grew and worked for for the bunny's benefit without contributing herself. As a gardener, my reaction was "F&&k you, B*#@h". Anyway, I get what you're saying about ignoring the source material. I didn't grow up with the books, but I can imagine I'd feel betrayed if a movie was made about the Berenstain Bears and turned Sister into an overly sarcastic and trigger happy parody of a B-action movie. In other words, my family received it well and continue to enjoy it, although I don't think it's going to have staying power beyond a few years the way the original books do.
