Peter the Great is one of my historical heroes. The story of his "Toy Army" is my favorite part of his biography/legend. He was a man of contrasts: simple, but brilliant; conservative, yet progressive; personable and affable, but also capable of ruthless cruelty. Regardless of how one may want to criticize him--no one can deny that he was, without a doubt, "great".

No. Russia never had intention to capture Europe. The reason Russia expended is to survive. Gergian King pray and ask Russians to take it land into Russia. And russia did not want to do that. But, finlay agree. Only becouse Gergia could face total extermoination by Osman empire. Gergians are ortodox christians and Russia could not let this to happen. Same story with Armenia. Peter oriented Russia to Europe to modernise it. He understande that it is essential for Russia to survive. And he was Right.

He did not make Russian great AGAIN, he just made Russia greater, Russia wasn't as great before him as it was after him. Trump is a retrograde that wants stuff to be like in the old days, hence the slogan "Great Again", Peter The Great wanted Russia to become a major European power so he sought to modernize and reform Russia, so the Trump's slogan of "great again" is completely unattributable to Peter as Peter was a modernizer who looked forward and Trump is a retrograde looking to restore the past, they're completely polar. Peter actually had to fight retrogrades in order to get rid of the old ways.

I have just seen the article on Catherine the Great and was disappointed at the program, which was told a lot different from an educated person from Russia, please see it and then make your comment, they rubbish Peter and made him out to be a dolt and he was far from that. I've been to St. Peterburg. There's a way that most can afford it. There are companies that offer high school (and college) students really REALLY cheap trips with great tours. My 10 day stint in Russia cost $1700 in 1993. It included transportation, lodging, tours, and two meals a day. Tour of the Kremlin (for starters), hotel across the street from Red Square. Fun overnight train trip to St. Petes. Tour of the large (but simple) cabin in the woods. AMAZING fountains. I was invited because my local high school was two people short of qualifying for free tickets for the chaperones. I didn't go as a chaperone, but I accompanied the group on most of its outings. What a trip! Take it off your bucket list by finding those companies that organize these wonderful and affordable tours. I can't remember the name of the company that organized mine, but it isn't the only one.

Peter did not bring Patrick Gordon to Russia. Gordon was there already when Peter reached maturity. Patrick Gordon fled from England, served in the Prussian and Swedish armies before joining the Russian army in the times of Peter's father. It is correct that Gordon was a great soldier and Peter indeed wept upon his death and later declared that the catastrophe at Narva would have had another outcome had Gordonhad the command of the Russian troops. In the 17th. century Russian suspicion towards foreigners was great but Gordon was very respected due to his services to the Russian state and thus not only Peter but many other Russians was stricken with grief when that great soldier died. The history of Peter and Russia during this particular period is one of the most interesting periodes of European history in my opinion and I much enjoyed your video though there are some elements in your narrativ that I would have changed IF it was my video. :-)

@scpmr9 жыл бұрын
@sailaciagofren10769 жыл бұрын

Correction....... After Charles kicked Peter out of Narva, Peter begged for peace over and over again, year after year.. He even fled the battlefield days before the battle excusing himself he had to greet the awaited Turkish delegation. Only thing is the Turks were expected. and arrived 6 months after Narva. Charles reply sent back with Russian "plea for peace" couriers was always the same "There will be peace and it will be signed by you once I reach Moscow." He wasnt the brave charachter portrayed here. Charles pursued Peter for nine years, deeper and deeper into Russia, kicking the crap of the Russians in every major battle always outnumbered 3-4 to one. Peter was always the first to turn tail, Charles always the 1st, personally to lead the soldiers into battle.. I think that says something..... At Poltava during the first hour, Russians and Kossacks started deserting by the hundreds as they expected yet another defeat. The defeat at Poltava was more a mix of unfortunate circumstances rather than Peter's "battle tactics". The victory was near for Sweden and had Hamilton's cavallery quit pursuing the Russian cavallery earlier and if the batallions of Roos infantry, which was one-third of the total force, had reconnected with the main force, the result would have been different.. We are looking at a starving, tired and worn army that's been on foot for nine ( !!) years against a fresh, well equipped Russian army four times stronger... Yet Peter does not take the initiative but fortifies himself in a pure defensive position.. Three years later and Peter and Katarina are about to be slaughtered by the surrounding Ottoman army.. He bribes himself out and Katarina even gives up her personal diamonds. I cannot say Peter is quite the hero.... S.t Petersburg btw is built by Swedish POWs...
