this is fascinating. I have absolutely no recollection of how did I found this video. this feels like what would happen if a computer was trying to recreate the memories of a deceased person. And all you see are the shattered, mixed memories from different moments all on top of each other.

@@tangowhiskyman2007 in a "Les Cahiers du cinema" magazine (I am French like Gaspar Noe is) that is how I heard about his top films list. there's two aspects of this film that immediately came to mind upon finishing this for the first time and I'm going to try my best to connect them. literal: it's like a deconstruction of sound and sight. it begins as somewhat legible yet distorted images, disintegrating to the point where the screen is occupied by just shapes - the shape of rectangles reminiscent of a 35mm film guage reeling (although the aspect ratio of the film is something else? not sure), as well as a sharper shape that, when paused, looks likes audio waveform. This is literally the visual (film guage) and audio (waveform) of the film being torn apart and presented as its constituent parts. It reminds me of deconstruction in music (see Tim Hecker). thematic: I interpreted this as a trauma piece - using visual and sonic deconstruction as a means of conveying trauma induced memory loss. Your brain's self-destruct mechanism in an attempt to stop you from reliving your abuse.

I saw Outerspace on the wide screen at the the Tellruide international Experimental Film Exposition in 2001 and was overwhelmed by the experience. The light and sound and fragmentary chaos on the big screen changed me forever. The source footage is from the film “The Entity” starring Barbara Hershey.

I have seen some of the most infamous films, whether that be fiction or real footage of horrific incidents; and yet none of them chilled me to the core like this one. Dear God, I have never had a film grip me like that. Really impressive editing for 1999, impressive even for now, I don't know how they did it. Really amazing use of audio, I feel it really seals the deal; the creativity you would need to plan out these shots, and these sounds so horrifically is the work of a true artist. Not only that, but the way it's not just random edits, but tells a story through its editing; from dark and choppy, to smooth and white, to dark and violent again. Love the euphoric hit when the negative filter rectangles/lightening come on and everything smears, and music kicks in. I have never seen anything really like this, makes me feel like I'm drowning in a sea of violent waves, just really great. I don't think anyone could make this without being just a little insane, and an insane commitment to the films people quietly keep in their mind to never be said aloud, you could easily use this as torture, and to that I tip my hat to you Tscherkassky!

Maybe another avant-garde film on the nature of voyeurism? It seems to just be a badly damaged film...but then you put a beautiful woman in an unsettling environment, and my own voyeurism kicks in. I ignore most of the distorted and disorientating film (or editing?) and ask myself, what is going to happen to her???

FYI, the audio is summed to mono which took away the actual warmth and dimension the sound design has of the movie and you shouldn't really be caring about this until you experience it in full stereo.
