Even more impressive: he lost his son the day after he was appointed as highest military commander of the Netherlands. And then he had to deal with it and try to keep his personal grief apart from his new role for the Netherlands in his professional work.

Peter van Uhm a very well respected general, you can just feel that he is a real father figure for his man and woman. His son died in Afghanistan the first day after he took command as the highest commander of the Dutch forces. It must have been so hard to be mourning as a father and still having the responsibility of the mission in Afghanistan. I have nothing but respect for this man.

He was the general when my husband was still in the army. My husband was in Afghanistan when his son Dennis was killed. It’s always bittersweet to see him, and hear him speak.

I had the honor to meet General van Uhm, he was retired at that point. Why did I meet him?! He was and is ambassador for hulphond Nederland. Huldhond (assistance dog) Nederland trains dogs to be assistance dogs, epilepsie dogs, therepie dogs ect. Van Uhm is not just an ambassador. He and his family have trained pups for the first year of there life. A truely kind, softspoken, and gentle men. The kind of person you want to lead your army.

From platoon commander to Chief of Defense. A remarkable man. General Uhm could (he retired a few years ago) stand behind, or actually next or in front of his soldiers since he was one of them. Outmost respect for this man who, in despite of loosing his son in Afghanistan, still believes in the norms, values and the necessity of our international working armed forces. Really appreciate this video on your channel and your reaction to it from a military AND civilian point of view. I salute both of you for the same reasons... Now Peter van Uhm is retired, he's an ambassador for the training of assistance dogs. The first dog he handed oud was to a soldier with PTSS - the same soldier who tried to help Peter's son when he died in Afghanistan. I saw Peter van Uhm once 'live' giving a lecture in my hometown. I have nothing but respect for this man.

I sympathize with you and certainly with General van Uhm. I've seen the misery of guns being held in the wrong hands. I have seen the plains west of Kupres and Kupres itself and Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina. But this man has lost his son. On 18 April 2008, his son, First Lieutenant Dennis van Uhm, at the age of 23, along with 22-year-old soldier of the first class Mark Schouwink, was killed in Uruzgan by an attack with a roadside bomb. His speech at TEDxAmsterdam gained national and international acclaim and was viewed millions of times.

Nice to see this talk again. General Van Uhm lost his son freshly promoted to chief of defence staff. Still, he wanted his job to proceed as normal. I remarked that it might be unwise to proceed with him as it could influence his judgements, my Director said, "then you don't know generals very well". I still remember that. As you can imagine, the whole atmosphere became a bit bizarre. I also knew the woman who wrote this speech. I know she had many conversations with the general about the speech. I think this was her masterpiece and she got a prestigious prize for it. I liked her a lot and also we talked a lot as I was in a crisis in my personal life. She really helped me. I knew she was writing this speech, but I was not allowed to have a preview, sadly.

As a pacifist/anti-war person myself, this was a learnful speech. HXC admitting the USA is a failed state on this subject shows his growing Dutch directness.

In the Netherlands every 18 year old (male?) gets a letter near their birthday that says you can be called to defend the country until 45 years old, if you're able to do so. I wouldn't be a great guy in the field because I have a scoliosis and autism but I am definitely able to forfill some supportive role. I'd never let this country get overrun like it happened in the second world war.

Most of my generation were conscripted into the army at a age of eighteen years, and we handled all kind of arms in those few years we had to serve. It's nice I never had to touch a weapon again in the last fifthy years.

Such an impressive talk. Violence is one of our worst impulses, and to defend yourself is so often not possible without the help of others. World War II would have such a different outcome if there was no help from Americans, Canadians and all those peoples far away from Europe. Hopefully we will have the courage to help others peoples whose families, lands, and properties are overrun by violent forces, and not turn our backs...

As a Dutchie gubs beside bb guns were hardlya part of my upbringing. I was shocked when in a bar in Atlanta, the gut sitting next to me at the bar of a country bar, had a serious weapon on his belt. In the weekend I was invited to a BBQ where they also had a gun range. I was shocked to see young girls with assault weapons but also taken by the lovely way they were taught because it was part of their loving upbringiging. The other way around they were shocked I let my ten year old stepdaughter go to grandma alone on her little bicycle because we taught her to be aware of dangers.

I am a pacifist, but I know very well that I can only be a pacifist because others chose not to be a pacifist. I could never shoot at a person (but I can do damage in other, non violent ways if needed) but have a huge respect for the men and women in our military. Even being a pacifist you can be a warrior. As a Dutch veteran who always adored the military in any way, always waved criticism away when it came to "anti-military"matters,....now I am more mature I became more of a pacifist because war is a dirty business. And realizing that in the past I hated pacifists because the way they think I came to terms. Realizing that in most of the people is a pacifist. Sorry for disturbing you mate ;-)

Thank you for your service and sacrifice Highly! I hope you are aware that Dutch schools teached my generation a lot about freedom and about our dependence on the Allied forces during the second world war. There are so many Memorial statues kept in impeccable condition. As another example, a Sheman tank is permanently parked at the entrance of my town. Or the American War Cemetery in Margraten, which is US soil but guarded and maintained by the Dutch. The US and the Dutch may not have the same constitution, we adhere to the same values.

Even you go to the Netherlands, go to Margraten. It’s in the south of the Netherlands. A graveyard full of white crosses from American soldiers who gave their live for our, my freedom. There are also 2 long walls with the names of missing soldiers.

That's a great speech, truths not many people realize sadly. It's sad weapons are needed but they absolutely are with all the scum walking around trying to take away what we hold dear. Right now of course Ukraine, I sympathies with those people (partially because they're so close to us in so many ways) and I think we should definitely keep up the support. But the average Russian soldier isn't a monster, of course there are rotten apples, but I can't imagine it's anything close to what you see in places like the Middle East or in places in Africa.. Man I can't imagine how it would feel to face all those horrors over there. I'm not the type to serve but I would if I had to, god bless those putting their lives on the line for the good cause

Never forget the offer America, Canada and all those other country's made to liberate our country and our continent. That is the reason our country have to do our part, to support other country's like Ukrain and Mali and so on. But first we can never forget our own liberators. Being close to a gun isn't scary or uncomfortable. What makes it uncomfortable is not knowing what the person holding it is going to do with it. Or if you find a gun not knowing it's state/condition. That's the scary part in my opinion.

Like the man said and you said a gun is aTool. Its also a pretty dangerous tool and shouldn't be in the hands of those that don't need it and especially not in the hands that don't know how to use its safely. Also it shouldn't be allowed on "the streets" more then it has to be (accidents do happen and not everyone is stable, resposible enough that the should have easy acces to the things). You don't go walking around with a wood cutting axe or a big chainsaw or a big butchers knive downtown so why should you bring a gun there? Now there is nothing wrong with having one if you do need it as a tool and are propperly trained on it. Or for those few enthousiast who want to have some fun with it on a well protected range so outsiders won't get hurt. Just keep the guns there in well gaurded safe and if you have to move it from range to range do it in well gaurded safe way.

My mom and here family were com to the Netherlands from Germany , my mom was 18 enn she came to the Netherlands she had then 3 brothers and 1 sister ,the oldest brother not could serve but the other 2 ,that lived in the Netherlands talking Dutch ,but the were never naturalized so the must go and cried now we must fight against oure friends , my grand father was killed in ww2 so grandmother was stay Back with 5 children ,my 2 uncles 1 died in Russia and the other was missing ,and wenn liberators came to oure home my mother always must tell them put the gun away ,if somthing happen the think on me I was from German descent .yes there were many bad man as are in all countryside, yes also in the Netherlands. Because look what the was going in the overseas . I hope I am right I do not feel som guilt anymore please understand I not the one that is thinking the war was good . Please let there be peace everywhere ,I know it's a impossible dream ? Love to all peace workers all over the world ?😭❤💔

It's of course very sour to note that 12 years after this talk, after the loss of his son in Afghanistan, all the dead civilians and soldiers, the exact same regime is back in power in Afghanistan. This clearly demonstrates that the gun can protect democracy, but it can't bring it to places where the people aren't ready for it.

I am so glad that i don't need a gun in order to feel safe. I hope that situation never changes. But i realize in order to maintain that status we need people trained with guns to protect it. So i am not against guns. If i ever get the feeling my government cannot be trusted in this regard it's time to pack and move.

I have the feeling it's growing a bit more unsafe, but I might be wrong. If I'm right though then we could use a system like Switzerland or Finland has. I feel like guns shouldn't be as much of a taboo in the NL as it currently is, because it could prevent so much bad things if we do it right.

@@martyz1212 Crime rate has gone down constantly. What we now consider a crime wasn't even reported in the past. Think about violence against kids in schools, normal some fifty years ago, not any more. Domestic violence, a man beating his wife for not having the diner ready, normal thirty years ago, not acceptable now. Breaking the windows at people suspected to be gay, normal ten years ago, but a crime now. And even though we report more things as crime, crime rate goes down.

I'm dutch, and I own a "legal" gun. Not match People know that, People that know, dont know how two react to it. Het is in Nederland niet "normaal" om een wapen te bezitten. Mensen de er 1 legaal hebben, die praten daar niet over. Ik ga 1 keer per week naar de schietbaan. Het is een hele rustgevende sport. Je bent bezig met je ademhaling, en heel gecontroleerd en geconcentreerd bezig. Alles moet uiteraard veilig en gecontroleerd verlopen. Ik ben van mening dat iedereen wapen training zou moeten hebben/ krijgen. Echter ben ik tegenstander van het hebben van wapens thuis. Ik weet hypocriet, want ik heb een wapen thuis.

The whole reason that "instrument" was needed for liberation in the first place is because it was used for oppression first and foremost. Weapons always have and always will. Thats not any argument for their existence though. Also please stop using the following orders excuse for soldiers, has been old since the germans tried that in 1945. If you're a soldier you are choosing to go to another place to murder, whereas if you choose not to be you choose not to. Whatever excuse or validation you or anyone else might project over that doesn't take away the very reality we all can very easily figure out from following the news even casually. A government monopoly on violence is what has led here in the Netherlands to us no longer having the right do defend ourselves. And people being prosecuted for locking burglars in the bathroom until the police arrived

​@@martyz1212 it is. On average police takes 15 to 30 min to get anywhere in the Netherlands. And it is not illegal to lock in a burglar. Conviction however is up to the judge. (as you will understand)

Everyone do have the right to defend yourselves in the netherlands as long as you are using the same force as is used against you(i.e. if someone uses a weapon against you, you may as well, as long as its no firearm)
