I’m more personally bothered by Airbus A321’s replacing Boeing 757’s (and even 737’s). The MAX crisis made things awful, and the virus turned the world upside down. When this downturn passes, I have no clue what to expect, but I have still been letdown by Boeing. Although Airbus has gotten nailed by the virus situation too. And don’t be surprised if Boeing gets bailed out by the government.

These units were generally owned by Conrail before they were acquired on NS rosters and they have seen several decades of service. The technology in the SD60 series is not reliable to modern specifications so CSX union pacific and Norfolk Southern all retired them.

Thankfully 2 CSX SD60s were saved by Pennsylvania Northeastern (8701 and 8711) 8701 is in Lansdale sometimes used on PN L160 while 8711 assists CP SD40-2 5577 at Warminster on J930. 8711 is also a former EMD Demonstrator. Both actually looked like CSX hardly used them but that's what you get with EMD, pure quality and no rubbish if you take care of em when needed. These twins also almost replaced C39-8 8212 cause that thing is an unreliable GE POS!

I had to watch, over the course of 4 months, 15 locomotives being torn down and scrapped. It made my heart hurt, because these locos could still have been useful...somewhere. Edit: Oh...my...word. Seeing the engine numbers makes me think that this entire string was brought by NS to my town, where they were scrapped! We have part of the Detroit Corridor, between Fort Wayne, Ind., and Detroit, that comes through my town in southern Michigan.

We were talking about EMD's different engines at work today and it is sad to see NS getting rid of them, I've run them before and they were not that bad but I don't work on them and their mechanical records tell the story. At one time EMD was king but the SD50's SD60's were pretty much flops from what I've read, ones that were modified did turn out to be a reliable engine though. If I had to pick a favorite road locomotive it would have to be the SD40, it had the best power to weight ratio of almost any locomotive ever built, they would pull until they just couldn't unlike so many of the micro processor controlled locomotives, but that progress for you.
@stretchlimo72753 жыл бұрын

It's sad what they're doing to one of EMD's comeback kid. It may not have been able to outsell the Dash 8 but it out lasted the model. Norfolk Southern had those locomotives as solid performers for three decades. I saw a 204 in Greenville, SC come in the yard with an an ailing ES44DC, and 2 C44-9W's. I knew the crew. They came in on track two. It took two hours. They had to go across the whole yard of twelve tracks at least and pick up a parked EMD SD60 spartan cab. It was started and idling, isolated when I returned from studying at the library. They had the the ES44DC at the rear behind the SD60 as a heavy freight car. The 2nd unit, the short hood forward C44-9W was already short hood forward, was now point unit, and the other C44-9W was unit two. If that happens again, they won't have any SD60's to help them out. Sadly, I say farewell to an era.

idk, the SD60's never appealed to me, kinda like SD40s that took Viagra to get bigger, just blah. Anyway, in principle, It just stinks decent locomotives get scrapped/dumped on a whim. Ive seen several railroad graveyard videos where they just sit and rot. Pisses me off. Its unreal how many NS scrapped recently. They could have sold them to minor league railroads at the price of scrap. its similar to decommissioning a Navy ship. it was part of your life, in this case the engineers and conductors who operated them. Im sure they're misty eyed seeing them go.
