On this episode I finally get started on tearing down my 359 Peterbilt in preparation for paint. Amazing to me how a single day of work can turn what was a beautiful truck into something kinda ugly … oh well, it’ll look amazing when it’s done

The mirror moving is a plus, not a minus! When backing in you can open the door to see the trailer in a sharp back in! Huge plus!

Just back mask the inside of the windshield hole with tape to the adhesive is facing you, then put paper or plastic to stick and the windshield is covered. That’s what us restoration painters do.

You might look into using nut-serts to mount the mirrors instead of what was done before. The nutserts will give a nice clean install

I remember trying to pull the wiper arms off mu Pops' 81 359 and could not get them off. That was the mid 80's! Mark, you really should pull the vent windows out, and every other piece you possibly can as it will be a better job in the end. And take the sleeper completely off the truck. You will not regret it!

To reach the top of the sleeper, maybe that gantry platform using your small yellow scaffold is the best idea!

I painted mine from the side, lean over to the middle start from the middle to the outside then go to the other side and grab your wet edge in the middle and out to the other edge.

If your not taking windows out when you re spray get some electrical wire and push under rubber it will then leave a gap so you can mask and paint will drift under rubber .if you take windows out then you mask edges on the inside and use brown paper NOT news paper . It’s a lot of work but you should take sleeper off then you will be able to paint back of cab and front of sleeper. Keep up the good work it’s going to look a cool truck 👍A

Color scheme 26A on your Instagram page is very nice. But with blue colors and not the green ones. The blue colors are a good reminiscence for the beginnig from your LITTLE BY LITTLE Story with this great Peterbilt 359. In 1979 your Pete was white with another color stripes and at last it was blue. Take now both together. White an blue 😊

For the stripped out mirror bolts, instead of having to take the door all apart, you could install rivnuts in the door skin for the mirror. Just a thought.

Good idea replacing all that ancient glass and those seals, before painting is definitely the time to do it. Truck is gonna look sic when you're done mate, looking forward to seeing the finished product.

tape from the INSIDE of the cab when you go to paint it. I painted for a few years and picked up on a few tricks, I forget what they call it but painters will stick the tape on the piece that needs painted and actually roll the tape backwards to get a "soft edge" on different colors. If you tape on the inside on the window frame you won't get any overspray inside and the entire frame around the windshield will be once color and even inside where the seal sits

Mark,can you not use a rivnut for that missing mirror mounting?A trick for window rubbers is to just lift the edge of the rubber and then tuck a length of thin wire around it into the gap,it keeps the rubber away from the panel enough to prep and paint under the rubber slightly,and makes masking the rubber easier too.

Mark, take your time and remove as much as you can before painting, yes, it’s a pain, but in the end you’ll have a nicer finish and won’t have a case of the, I wish I would haves. It’s going to look amazing when it’s done! 👍

With the 2 windshields out, trace them on 1/4" plywood or 1/8 " hardboard and install temporary with a little masking tape while sanding, wet sanding and painting to keep the interior clean. That Metallic blue is going to be a great color.

Mornin Mark LBL sure does look different with all the shiny stuff gone, But I think the end result is gonna be worth it. Learned something new today on your video, I had one of those little pullers in my tool box that I picked up with a bunch of stuff at a garage sale and I had no idea that it was for pulling wiper blades, so thanks for that. Hey, OK.. two options Easy painting .. Dismount the sleeper and put it on a low stand with wheels .... . Hard way.. use painters scaffolding and hope you get paint on all the blind spots . YES , I have painted a few trucks too. great video. thanks

i used bricklayer rolling scafold it it worked great as it can ve built high enough and wide enough to roll over the whole truck

Great video mark. A great advantage of the door mounted mirrors is being able to open the door to essentially “adjust” the mirror to see the trailer better when making sharp lefts. I wanted to put newer style post mount mirrors on my old 379 until i realized just how often i use that trick coming out of narrow field approaches and such

Hi mark, as you are replacing the glass, use it to seal the window frame, by having a suction cup on the inside of the glass and a ratchet strap / bungee cord to draw the glass onto the frame .. you could also run a tape round the edge of teh glass to get a better seal when its pulled against the frame ... Keep up the good work .. Andy UK ..

Mr Mark, when I worked at a concrete company in my youth, I painted the mixer trucks. There was an attachment that gave me 3 feet of reach. Now, it was back in the 70s, and that attachment was there when I started. You may want to look into that. I painted many of concrete trucks and rigs with that spray head.

When removing windshield glass use Sprayway glass cleaner and a plastic pry tool, working your way around to lube the seal and then start slowly pressing the glass out. Will save you time and glass

Mark after you remove the windshield, when you put new ones in have glass company cut you some lite tinted bronze glass, that's what we used back in the day,

That beaut Gratz crane seems to be the answer for painting the sleeper. Move the sleeper back 3-4ft then you can do the top and front of the sleeper and the back of the cab.

Looking at the old paint underneath the spotter window my guess is it was originally painted with the Winslow paint scheme, and for the air can bands I reckon stainless or get them chromed

You was talking about them little plastic totes to hold all your screws and bolts. A zip lock bag works great too that way you can close it,and your bolts and screws don't get lost if it gets knocked over

Kenworth (at least in Australia) used the same door for every model (cabover and conventional) from the late 80s. There was two types. The flat bottom with the quarter glass and the daylight door. But you could swap out any with any.

Mark when you paint sleeper roof crawl from cab to halfway/ 3/4s sleeper roof hit very rear. then work your way forward in reverse and get both roofs in one shot. Then your done with the vertigo inducing height work.
