I have knives that I spent $20.00 Australian on, and knives I’ve spent $700.00 on, in both instances I’ve been happy with the purchase and extremely unhappy, I always research before buying. I’m by no means wealthy, so disappointment in an expensive knife hurts more than an inexpensive one. All that being said a good functional knife is still good at any price. I’m a knife guy, not a fanboy. We can find fault in anything if we look hard enough.

This was my first Mora knife when they first came out. It didn't seem so expensive because I didn't start off with a less expensive model and then upgrade. I wanted to see what all the hype was about. It's a decent knife but I still haven't really given it a good try and I'm not buying any more of these. I had a secondary bevel on one side only and other people complain about it.

I have no respect for Benchmade knives. Have a a lot of them over the years and they have all failed way before they should have. Worst one was an automatic folder that cost me 250 bucks that broke within 2 weeks of ownership. I was in the Army and was about to deploy to Iraq. Used the knife to cut some flex cuffs off and it snapped like it was made out of glass. Called Benchmade and they gave me the middle finger. I can say with confidence that they are indeed overpriced and not anywhere near the quality they advertise. There's more than enough knife tests out there that show this with various models they have produced over the years. I wouldn't spend that much on a Mora either. 20 bucks for one is fine and they do ok. Spending 200 bucks on a Benchmade is just dumb, just like everyone is finding out about Tops now.

@peterbiltknifeguy He gives interesting data points, but I base my opinions on my own experiences, which aren't much different than JoeX I'm guessing? Haven't seen him test a Benchmade yet. I have 20+ years experience with Benchmade and was always disappointed in what I got for the money, and in 2007 was very disappointed in the customer service experience. They could have at least asked for the auto folder back to see what went wrong. It broke around the hole that the knife pivoted on. Sorry I hurt your feelings, but Benchmade ain't worth the money in my experience. Kershaws were and at the time were made in the USA.

Hurt my feelings??? 😂 not even close. You have 20 years. I have 22 years experience. Maybe you made poor choices in knives and expected too much from them 🤷🏻‍♂️ That hasn’t been the case for me. I edc benchmade every day. For many many years and multiple models. Has been my experience. Now with that being said. I own hundreds of knives. And many long before I started KZbin a year ago. I currently only own 6 benchmade knives. So I’m far from an fanboy.
@terrencemccargish442
@terrencemccargish442 10 ай бұрын
@peterbiltknifeguy Sure sound like a fanboy. I own exactly zero. My first Benchmade came in 1997, so I guess I've got you beat by a few years. Hard to pick b3nchmades then because they only had a few models. Bought my last two in 2007 before an Iraq deployment. That folder broke rather easily. Top tier tactical knife supposedly. How was that a poor choice? The other was that little fixed blade tac knife that I don't remember the model now. Never used it so I can't comment on performance. Gave it to one of my joes. I'm not the kind of person to randomly crap on a product. Is what it is. I'd expect my $100 folder to not fall apart after a year. That's in 90s money. Had several that ranged from 80-150 back then. Everyone talked them up, so I bought some to use. I didn't see anything special about them, kind of like some don't like the Moras. I don't have a Garberg, and probably won't buy one. I do have the companion heavy duty and it works ok. Hate the sheath, so it only goes in my pack to be used when needed. Some people love the heck out them. Meh, they're ok. I have not tried any Benchmades since 2007, but then would you with such a bad customer service representation? I just spent 250 bones on your "elite tactical" folder and it can't even handle cutting off a set of flex cuffs without snapping like a twig? I'll pass on Benchmade just for that reason. Cold steel did us up right for the deployment with a big box a freebies for the road. What's the difference? Quite a bit of money for pretty much equal performance. People are finding out the same thing about Tops. I think people buy these brands for the same reason people buy BMWs. Yeah they look cool and cost a lot, but bottom line they do the same thing as a toyota. And the toyota most likely will do it for a lot longer for a lot less. You spend your money how you want, I'll spend mine. I know I made poor choices in buying knives over the years, and it just so happens that Benchmade is on that list.

I mostly agree. Mora are good for cheap stuff. They now have this ash handled range that goes over 150€. I've looked at them when in Mora last summer, but nothing justifies the price. I got a Kansbol (50€ range) for camping, food prep, even did some batoning to get smaller wood blocks to start the fire. It works fine, but it needed resharpening quite often during our 3 week trip. If it was mandatory to spend 150+ €, I would certainly prefer the benchmade over any Mora.

I like the Mora Companion and their other less expensive models but their higher end models like the Gaeberg and Kransbol are not close to being worth the price. I have never paid more than $15.00 for a Mora and I never will. Anyone that does has been blinded by the light. The Companion and Craft series are great budget options that are solid performers for the money. As for the higher end models, there are much better knives out there for the same and even half the price. Everybody likes a good solid budget option but don't get suckered into paying for the name. All Moras are basically the same design with different steels and different sizes. I like the Eldris but I'm not paying $40/$50 for what is basically half a companion. I believe in buying a knife based on it's true worth, no matter what brand it is. Just like Cold Steel, they have some excellent budget options then they have wuite a few ridiculously overpriced models that are no better than their budget line up, every brand does. I am not brand loyal, I buy based on quality and performance, as well as price, no matter the brand.

I am from Sweden and own many Mora knives. I have Garberg but not with carbon steel. I think it's a decent knife that has never let me down. Then whether it is worth 100 dollars is negotiable? You get a good Eafengrow knife plus some money to spare. I have the usual mora with the cheaper sandviken steel in every fishing box and bag. It doesn't matter if you carelessly throw away a knife like that for 8-10 dollars. Then break in some things that are not made of trees. Then you don't cry blood from deep scratches, big cuts in the blade right away. The Mora Robust Stanlines is a good knife to beat up and for the price it costs it is hard to beat under $10 here if you count in the US. Don't do anything if you are careless or forget the knife wet so it has rust spots a few months later. In that way, I am a Mora Fan Boy for sure. Mora Garberg I don't know? There are many good alternatives in the same price class or that are better than Garberg in my opinion. Same with Fällkniven, which is even more expensive. There are clearly better knives for half the price. I dropped my Fällkniven F1 in the woods while I was hunting. Then I wasn't happy at all. Like dropping a couple of hundred dollars that it costs is no fun at all. I liked that knife very much. Was good at most things except the price. Expensive knife but a good knife. Affordable is negotiable?

Yeah I'd agree and although mine came not so sharp as well it stropped up very easily in no time. The trick is not to strop it as a true Scandi grind, cause it isn't. I don't feel all precious about it and as here in the UK it's not a great idea to keep a knife on your belt, even (probably especially so) in an isolated forest. I can just put it in my bag, it takes up hardly any space and the shape of the sheath means I can squeeze it in somewhere or other. It throws great sparks. Even though yes I'll generally use a lighter first to get a fire going because I can, it's easy and fast, but it's also nice to know I'll get a few thousand fires out of a firesteel with it if my lighter gets wet, the flint pings out, and 100 other possibilities. It's an option and one worth having. The blade is strong as a blade ever needs to be unless you start using it like a moron and I've used it for a lot more than just processing wood. Yes there are mora 'fanboys', just like there are benchmade 'fanboys' and most benchmade guys and esee guys tend to live stateside where 'made in the USA' means this magic stamp of approval. To me personally and I'd guess to everyone outside the USA 'made in the USA' doesn't mean anything more than that. TRC who probably make the best thought-out, made and finished knives are in Lithuania... so being made in the USA only means something if you just want to.buy American. But I've found most of my most trusted gear, like fjallraven and mora and light my fire etc are usually Swedish. I'd also imagine a garberg will out live that benchmade. But time will tell. My carbon garberg cost £69 and I definitely can't complain at that. €80 is even less.

Mora doesn't make knives for display cases, but for any job that needs a good smaller knife. With Swedish steel craftsmanship. Don't look for artistic beauty in a Mora, because a Mora is purely functional and nothing more. But if you need a durable and reliable handy little knife for pennies, look no further, because you won't find a better and cheaper knife than a Mora! The Garberg is just a more expensive model, but the Companion or Robust are very cheap and very good if you're not up against a herd of crocodiles. ...but maybe even then! Not even a crocodile will deform it! It's sure! I have a Robust Carbon and I love it! I keep it with me all the time. Mora makes more expensive ones, but the cheapest knives are just as good quality as the expensive ones. I have nicer knives, but hardly better. Robust will always be in my backpack!

Hello my dude. Thank you for the provided content from you, I really enjoy your videos and shorts. I wanted to express my opinion on this video, because you seem somehow attacked by some people's opinions on a question you asked in a short, and from what I can see, you got affected by it. From my point of view, as you stated in this video, people buy moras as a "throwaway" knife, or as a reliable cheapie you can throw in your bag and not spill tears when you lose or abuse to the point to which it is unusable. Based on that, I do not understand why you would buy a 80 dollar Mora just to shit on it, when even you know this steers from the budget knife argument 😂 Also, another point of view is that alot of people cannot afford or do not want to buy a 100 USD plus knife, which essentially is a Mora which is more robust, and you sharpen it less frequently. Sometimes it's hard to argue about a price of a knife, when you take it as a hobby, when most of the people which watch your channel might not, and they might see a knife not based on the value including the design, handle, sheath, brand reputation etc. Most would be like 5 inch knife, carbon steel(its hard!) And a plastic rubberised handle 20 bucks vs 100 bucks, ehich would you choose?😂 Anyway, this is the argument I had. Did not mean anything hateful towards you or your content, please keep making videos and destroying toilet rolls c: and have a nice rest of your day!🔪🔪

I was never a mora fan boy but I managed to pick up a stainless Mora Garberg really cheap around £37.00, I can say after stropping the life out of it I absolutely love it, to be honest if I would have paid £60 I wouldn't have been disappointed. My view is that it's pointless having a go at people's knife choice as it's down to the individual what works for them. I find you can purchase a knife because of another's recommendation and find it doesn't work for you but does it make it a bad knife, no not really. I know a couple of people with the bench made puukko and they all love it, I know someone else who got one and wasn't very impressed. As I say everyone is different it's about what works for you and of course what you are using your knife for. I've been trying out a the Za Pas ultra outdoor knife for the last 4 months and it's an excellent camp knife, I have to say I've been impressed with it.

I think the recycled steel is their stainless steel. The material of the handle is getting used to but isn't grippy enough, I would like a slightly bigger finger guard bcs of this, the carbon blade itself is great quality imo. The plastic sheath should be a little higher at the handle, since the added weight of being full tang. I also believe that the price has also increased slightly for their products since they had a change in leadership in Mora.

A big thing when it comes to knives is personal preference, and personal experience. Obviously there are objectively bad knives out there, but if someone prefers a mora over a benchmade they are well within their right. If someone prefers a benchmade over a mora that’s well within their right. Neither of them may be better then the other over all, but because someone has experience with one means it’s the knife they prefer. People’s tastes and needs vary.

I can't stand these knives. I've had several. That knife right there and all other "true scandi's" tips always break like the first 1 mil or so. They can hardly do anything a good pocket knife will do. They suck at fool prep. They suck at chopping (like can't do it at all type of suck). The edges ALWAYS chip or fold over. They suck for sharpening. You have to remove the whole surface of the ground flats on both sides to get a chip out, if you want to keep your "true scandi grind". Their sheaths suck horribly. They are usually so deep stuck in the sheath they are a pain to get out and you have to readjust your grip a lot to get an actual cutting grip. Some of these have worthless, slick, round, wood broom handle type handles. They swell in the middle and angle Towards the blade, with no protection. Freeking genius. Also with those worthless handles it's hard to impossible to tell where the edge is when you're doing something in the dark or inside or under something. Not only that but those handles or sliiiick. For as much as someone pays for that freeking Garberg right there it should have came sharp. Not only that the position of the lanyard hole is absolutely stupid. Over an inch into the handle 🤦. Anyway when someone uses one of these versus almost any other outdoor knife they'll see just how dumb these knives are. I was an admirer of these blades like 25 years ago because Mors Kochanski used one. I got into knives more. Got others. Started using them outdoors more and started to realize how weak, limited and worthless these mora/scandi knives really are. I have one left, I can't really even give away. The tip is broke, chips in the edge and the original sheath is gone and busted up because it was so cheap. I made 2 leather sheaths for it and I still no one will take it. Anyway you are definitely not the only one who doesn't really like these blades. I only know of one person out of many, many knife guys I know that actually prefer one of these blades.

Personally I don't understand why anyone would buy the Garberg instead of the Bushcraft Black in carbon steel of course but the handle, sheath attachment and especially the price is better. Sure the sheath is still plastic but it won't go all willy-nilly and fall off your belt when sitting. The only thing that I am missing on the Bushcraft Black is a lanyard hole, but I solved it temporarily with a lil bit of duct tape and plan to make a more permanent solution in the future. But as many others have said, initial impressions don't carry any real weight nor value, to get a real feel for ANY knife you have gotta use it either daily for 3 months or every weekend for 6-8 months. And as for bushcrafting, I try and go out in the woods as often as I can and I don't hunt nor currently fish. So what I do is actually bushcrafting.. Tbf that statement was kinda unnecessary really.

Didn't get on the Garberg bus when it came out and probably never will. Went for an Enzo Trapper in a flat grind which cost less than the Garberg at the time, micarta handle, N690c blade (there were only stainless Garbergs at the time), a good leather sheath and it came sharp. Never regretted that decision for a second. Do like the Mora 2000s though, the handle is much more like your Benchmade and it's a good all rounder. It's about personal preference and what you do with it though isn't it, not about telling others what their preference should be.

I bought a Dala Red edition last year. I was severely disappointed that, although it has the exact same handle design as the Kansbol, is doesn’t have the TPE rubber on the handle material for grip and traction like the kansbol and my bushcraft black (which is still my favorite mora design…wish they’d make that knife in a full tang.) That hard plastic in the Garberg handle just feels really cheap and makes the knife handle unnecessarily slick given the lack of a better guard. It was a major turnoff for me.

You know; I have always wondered why it is that Bushcrafters Insist on a scandi grind. As you said, a scandi is SO limited in what you can do with it - it may well be excellent when it comes to wood-carving, but that's it. On top of this, a scandi is SO much harder to sharpen in-the-field. I imagine that bushcrafters sharpen their knives at home, on a full-sized wet stone held securely in a bench-vice, but sharpening it in the woods with a small hand-held stone... and keeping the original scandi profile, is almost impossible. And the Garberg comes with a secondary bevel? What's the point in that?!! Give me a hollow or full-flat grind Any day.

The issue with Benchmade is that like many other big name products, half the price is in the name. Don't get me wrong, Benchmade makes great knives but you could easily knock $100 off the price of any of their knives and you would be way closer to their actual value. Morakniv is a big name brand, in as much as they are very popular and are known for making quality knives. The difference is, they don't penalize you at the cash register for buying their product. As good as that Benchmade is, there is nothing about having that name will help you with when it come time to actually use it. I do agree whole heartedly with you on blade grinds. Scandi is great for a few things but its not a universal grind. It would be nice to see Mora branch out on that point. I did find it weird that you find $80 too much because of the sheath and handle. For the sheath, thats fair. I hate Mora sheaths. But the handle? If i was charged what you paid for that Benchmade and got a rubber handle, id be pissed. Take the retail price for that knife and take $100 off right away for brand snobery and then an easy $20 to $30 more for that cheap rubber crap and you'd be in the right ball park. That Benchmade is a rip off at anything over $100. The Mora Garberg, I'd say, yeah $80 is too much. $60 to $65 would be more accurate but $80 is by far not as much of a gouge as the insane prices Benchmade wants for an average knife with a hollowed out dildo for a handle.

Mora uses recycled steel in the stainless steels, it is like that, what is left of the residue of the stampings, plus the filings when they make the bevels that is reused again, because there is chromium in that steel, that is why they call it recycled steel, but not This is the case of carbon steel, investigate gringos, that won't hurt you. What I say is published by the company in one of its videos

Well I can smell the testosterone from here guys, knife discussion brings out the best and the worst in us,lol. But it's the differant likes and wants in a knife that keeps the industry turning out differant knives to tempt us, and boy do we get tempted, I've known guys whith drawers full of knives, who are still searching for the holy grail of a knife, but if that keeps em happy then who am I to condemn them , no matter which brand they are currently in love whith, lol. And the same goes for cars ,bikes, fancy fishing tackle catches more fishermen than fish, don't ask me how I know that,lol. And yes I buy knives for whatever reason I think I can justify the purchase for, some are keepers, quite a few are long gone after 75 yrs, do I have any regrets hell no, we only live once, enjoy what you can ,while you can. Thanks for the video mate, best wishe's to all, Stuart Uk.
