It is weird that the shot of the guy going into the house with at night looks more "cinematic" on the Raven. The Star Wars poster seems appropriately slightly out of focus whereas the Komodo is razor sharp.
@PeterBaerveldt4 жыл бұрын
I was also surprised by that. I thought I messed up the focus but Komodo seems sharper overal. I like that Raven for that as well. It's only when you do these test you see these things. Can't wait to shoot a fashion project with both camera's to see what that brings.

interesting for me to watch comparisons from the perspective as a vfx artist. I used to integrate cgi into footage and therefore matching all aspects. As we would match: Colour, sharpness, light and grain, I find it funny how people's comments on these two cameras may not realise understandably depending on their experience, that it is possible to match these cameras exactly in all but slow motion timing. The resolution difference actually accounts for the slight sharpness difference between these as well but if the effect of resolution on perceived sharpness is understood then even this can be accounted for in one of the directions depending on the look the film maker wants to achieve. If someone would like the Komodo footage to look the same, then you can take a reference of the footage you like and then look at its grain detail(and colour, plus size of grain since the resolution of an image will make a grainy image appear less grainy when seen at different resolutions or output afters called down), Its sharpness level and diffuse slightly, contrast level and saturation. All of these can be matched as well as you have skill and time for if it matters. The biggest difference between the outcome of a shot has more to do with planning than the cameras used. Both of these cameras here are fantastic and the only downside would be the modern user who relies on slow motion for their content. In that case, there are many options out there to suit that. Much of what people complain about on the Komodo is not found on other cameras matching the quality of images so not the best comparison. There are amazing dedicated slow motion cameras out there to be rented to dedicate to slow motion if that is the focus for sure.

Seems like most filmmakers today (and I use that term very loosely) are more concerned about slow motion rather then anything else. Most of the time slow motion is used to much and is complete overkill, especially because people have this idea that slow motion is somehow more "cinematic"? I rarely use slow motion and If is do 60FPS is great at 4K and 2k 120fps would only be used sparingly because let's face it even that frame rate at any resolution isn't that slow at all. anymore. My. opinion is that for the price point, convenience, for factor, and versatility the RED Komodo is a unreal piece fo gear. if you take slow motion out of the conversation, what can you really say bad about a camera that shoots raw, with crazy dynamic range, 16bit, global shutter, Autofocus and 6K? How on earth can people criticize something this good?! I had the choice between this and a A7SIII and chose the Komodo because the only thing that stood out from my A7III to the Sony A7SIII was better slow motion.
@PeterBaerveldt4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Slowmotion is great to have but it's not something that is on my priority list as a filmmaker. But, like you said, many people nowadays do rely on slowmotion a lot for their work so in that case this camera will surely disappoint. The A7SIII is a great camera and it's slowmotion is gorgeous (just like my c70). It's just for different types of projects / content I feel like.

- Faulty SDI Port - Doesn't have Ratio Compression - No internal ND's - Barely has 13 stops of Usable Dynamic Range - Need a lot more to get started - Auto Focus is okay at BEST - slow motion crop is literally laughable - Is not 16-bit but 12-bit (compressed R3D) - Audio Preamps are mid - I/O's are extremely limiting - Price for Mid Specs What could I say bad? I guess a lot.

This is part of why I bought the Zcam e2s6, over the Komodo, do I think the komodo is better? Yes I do! But, At $2500 with an internal electronic ND vs the $6000 for Komodo, I don’t see the difference as much. Komodo has sdi which I do miss on Zcam, but I have two Panasonic Eva1s to cover my broadcast standards. I feel like red soon (as good of a camera as it is) is going to start getting written off as the budget red camera and being associated with budget shooters, similar to how the bmpcc6k is. But then again, on projects where that matters, you might be renting anyway.
@PeterBaerveldt3 жыл бұрын
I think the Zcam is excellent and it's one of those camera's that offers a lot for a very competitive price and I agree there are many projects were you won’t see the difference. Probably even get better results with a Zcam when used by a pro. It's a camera for a different audience. RED camera's are very specific and that's perfect for what i do. When I started using RED in 2017 it was because it had a great picture and it had a RAW codec that I could edit on my cheap macbook. Only when I started doing KZbin I learned about the more technical stuff (the stuff they use in 'comparisons'). Stats, prices and brandnames don't matter for most clients. Results do and a Zcam in the right hands will get those results. My point: For me the perfect camera was a RED Raven and now I'm used to working with a good codec, loads of color depth for over 4 years so the Komodo is a logical step for me. For someone else it is the Zcam. When a camera fits your work and workflow it will be the best tool for the job. I don't want to go back to 10-bit prores internal or prores RAW via a Ninja or something. I like the fact that the RAW recording is in-camera and that I know how it performs when shooting fashion content. For me that makes RED the perfect tool that fits my skillset. So is it better? For me it is. However it's not the best choice for many people.

Honestly, I think RED fell short with this Komodo. Most other cameras at cheaper price point have some of the key features it's missing. The crop on 120fps is horrendous; quite unusable in most situations. In 2020 slo-motion is an essential for most cinematographers. The display is basic at best, you still have to rig it; Atomos monitors alone are $600. Then you add the cage, handles and all that you will spend another $1000. You only have one CFast card slot; which isn't really practical even as a B-cam. My question is if this camera had a different brand name, will anyone of us filmmakers be interested? I think not.
@PeterBaerveldt4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing, I do get your point and why this camera is a bad purchase for a lot of creators. Still, I don't agree with what you're saying :P Slowmotion in 120fps is important for some but what other (small) cinema camera does 4k/6k at 120fps in a good RAW format (at least 12-bit)? Personally I don't use 120fps on my Raven very often. 60fps is my sweet spot and that they didn't add 60fps in 6k simply sucks. The global shutter.. not having that ugly jello effect.. that's something I would buy a camera for. The display is very nice. Basic or not.. it works and it's useable. I don't see how that is a dealbreaker. You don't need to rig it but you could if you want to. People do it for some reason and I don't know why. If you keep this camera small it works amazing and it really shines in my opinion. I do like some mounting options (like the timmy ribs give you) but nothing more. This indeed adds to the price but I also think that a lot of people build these rigs because they don't shoot with small camera's and feel like they need to make it something it's not. I own a few monitors for my work. One of those is the Atomos Shinobi SDI. Cost you around 300 euro's. You definitely need one when focussing handheld. I tried focussing without and failed miserably. The screen is too small for critical focus. But a good external screen is aways good to have. Why is one card slot not practical? All RED camera's have one slot and they're used in some pretty diverse and extreme situations? I have always shot with one card at a time so I'm not really experienced in the two card at a time thing. Now finally to answer your question: if this camera had a different brand name, will anyone of us filmmakers be interested?... Of course people would be interested. This camera fits the needs of a lot of people better than any other camera in this categorie could. the global shutter, codec and size itself are a reasons why would want this camera. When BMPCC 4k/6k came out we all had the same kind of reaction. I liked the BMPCC6k for what it brought in therms of weight, size and price but already shooting with RED for my work the BMPCC6k couldn't keep up performance-wise. So when RED announced this Komodo I was beyond happy. This camera fills every gap in my production so far (weight, size, portability and price). I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this. Is this a camera for everyone? No.. it surely is not and that's why I understand what you're aiming at but hopefully this explains at least for a tiny bit why some people are beyond hyped about this camera even tho for other people it seems like the worse fit ever. Thank you for dropping this comment man, I do like to have a bit of a discussion about the camera and the perspective of other people. That's really useful for everyone here on the channel!

I feel like I am ready to take the next step in my production life, with the main focus on talent/creative agencies and commercials/films. what would you buy if you got a 10k$ budget: Red Komodo or used Red Epic Dragon 6k/Scarlet 5k ? Thanks
@PeterBaerveldt4 жыл бұрын
Good question, an Epic dragon 6k will definitely give you more than Komodo offers. On the other hand the Komodo is the most convenient cinema camera I've ever used and that, by now, has a lot of value for me. If slowmotion beyond 60fps isn't a necessity I would go for Komodo. I wouldn't go for scarlet just for the simple fact that Komodo outperforms the scarlet 5k and on top has the benefit of being new, IPP2 internal, global shutter and 6k 40fps. If I had no RED camera and got this option now to buy epic dragon or Komodo I would with my work, Gimbal jobs, corporate video's, fashion video's and KZbin content, go for Komodo. Not because it's better but because it's way more convenient. I hope this helps you a bit. If you want to chat of discuss some more just hit me up on Instagram or something.
