As an owner of a set of Wilson golf clubs (£350 with bag) I can assure you that buying better clubs is not going to make me a better player. I kinda agree with Pete's sentiment (kind of...) but focus on practice and lessons before thinking you can buy yourself into a low handicap

I've got a similar box set that's the core of my bag; I've just been upgrading as I realize I need to (or, as I find a deal to jump on). That's one major advantage of a box set -- you're set to play golf immediately, and can take your time upgrading if you like. And, yes, money spent on lessons for beginners is going to pay more dividends than money spent on gear. It's a poor mason that blames his chisel, as they say.

I started playing golf last year and bought a cheap package set to begin with, and like others have now started to upgrade the set as its not as good as I would like it to be. I do think that choosing from the second hand market is really tough though if you don't know what you are looking for and I think that stores like golf bidder could offer a second had pre-selected "Starter bundle" that might really help those of us who want to try it.

I'm a big fan of the solo match play when I can do it. I usually play "smart" golf vs "hero" golf so the "smart" ball almost never sees the driver off the tee and plays "proper" golf while the "hero" ball goes for every green from the tee box regardless of yardage and always has a gap to hit through.

State-of-the-art, top-dollar clubs might save the average recreational golfer a handful of strokes per round. More strokes to be saved by practicing your short game, and exercising better course management. If you have some cash to spend... go get a lesson or two from your local pro. Club upgrades can be had pretty cheaply if you're willing to hit discount/secondhand shops and garage sales. I recently picked up a used Biggest Big Bertha 9 degree driver for $20 and a very nice Cleveland sand wedge for $8.
@FloridaManRacer3 жыл бұрын
Did you adjust for the fact those shafts were more light weight? Or did you take your standard strength swing knowing they were lighter and bend the shaft on impact like a pretzel? For a beginner or a senior player these clubs would perform much better than this showcase lets on and I'd bet good money on it. Also, I don't feel some of the points made in this video matter for the person this set is aimed at. Bulky club head size? Who cares? Can't hit 300yds on a drive? Who cares? The whole point of this set is to teach you how to get the ball in the air and do it straight, not go out and shoot scratch golf. I personally think the mindset of this particular video was way off. I know you're capable of hitting a ball VERY well, but you are not the demographic for this set of clubs. A 16 yr old who wants a nice looking set for their first clubs is. A 75 yr old playing executive golf on shorter courses is. (A skiny weak 37 yr old like myself with an 85 mph club head speed is lol) You've got to take that into account in the future. Not everyone is a PGA Golf Pro who can ball strike like a monster, shape shots and flop a 60 degree wedge into the hole from 35 yards.

Big fan of Pete's but not a big fan of the attitude in this video. Constantly belittling the WIlson clubs and talking about how bad they are. Surely the message in this video should be that golf is accessible and anyone can play using the equipment they can afford. Instead the message has been don't bother if you have these clubs or they are all you can afford

You totally missed the point. For 300 quid you can build a quality second hand set from places like ebay and golfbidder, and they will look and feel so much better than the wilsons. The majority of my bag is made up of second hand stuff, titleist 690cb irons 3-pw ive had for ten years that were 72 quid in the golfbidder auction! 3 vokeys that were about 50 each. My titlesi 970d driver and ping g25 3 wood were freebies from friend who upgraded. My clubs are great and cost me buttons.

"As soon as you get any level of better, you're going to want something better." Can confirm; I bought a PowerBilt box set last year to get into golf, and I've been slowly replacing it, piece by piece, as I found gap holes (big gap between 150 and 200 for me with the 3w and 5h, and the lack of wedges meant I needed to add wedges to the mix for short shots) or other issues (I'm tall; I needed a longer-shafted driver and 3 wood than the set had). The main advantage of an inexpensive set like this is that it'll allow you to get out on the course tomorrow and play. Maybe not great -- I'd guess the average golfer won't lose as many strokes as Peter did, but certainly some -- but you CAN play them. Contrast with a rank beginner looking at the second-hand market, which can be bewildering. Box sets are good for going to the driving range and learning to swing a club. They're good for a fun round. And you can upgrade as it comes. My next big buy is going to be new irons, but I'll wait on that until the grips start to go, as "honey, it was either $100 for new grips, or a bit more for new, fitted irons."

Pete, I have the Wilson Profile XD with senior shafts $299 and have been playing them for 4 years. My H.I. is 15.8( I'm 68, 69 next month) I shot 72 twice this year and shoot low 80's I did replace the driver last year with a Mizuno ST190 HL when the Wilson cracked and added a 52º Vokey SM8 and replaced the blade putter with a Tommy Armour Impact 3 also I replaced the bag last year when it wore through. I play 70 to 80 rounds a year while I agree they are not the best they will work.

Box sets are perfect for beginners. And I do mean perfect. They come with everything you need to get started. Considering you're probably taking 110-130 shots to get round 18 holes, you just need something that gets you started and you will hit them sweet once in a while and that's all you want. Once you feel you're improving just at being able to hit the ball, let alone worrying massively if it's going straight, then you might consider upgrading. Box sets have a place in golf, but not for a pro like Pete, so it's no surprise he hated them.

There is a market place for all budgets and handicaps from the social player to golfers who really want to strike the ball more consistently. I have played for 20 years and enjoyed playing golf. I recently got fitted for clubs and realised that my clubs were 1/2 inch too short and causing inconsistent hits on the ball. It is very easy to spend money on clubs to play better and add yards to each club but it depends on budget and how serious you want to lower your handicap. Keep the videos coming love the content.

I play with a mixed set of clubs that I bought from the local thrift store...I continue to stop in and buy whatever new they might have...at $3 per club I can afford to be disappointed, but I've just broken 85 playing twice a week and the bottom line is it' not the clubs, it's my skill level that matters...practice is more important than having a bunch of fitted, overpriced clubs.

Nice video! In the budget category, I think the best deal going is the Callaway Edge, which is re-issue of the old Callaway X2Hot (the irons at least, but I think the woods might be as well), and the older Odyssey Pro 1 White Hot putter. 10 pemium clubs (driver, 3W, 5H, 6i-SW) 400£ plus VAT. Combined with the Coscto wedges (best deal of the year at about 120£) you are looking at 650£ about with bag for 13 clubs. Just saying....

Yeah, I got a full set of XRs for the same price too. The benifit was that I could pick which clubs I preferred (hybrids/Woods, putter shape etc) The con is it takes patience to find the right ones at the right price and you'll likely need a regrip since I've ended up with 5 different grip brands and shapes.

Law of Diminishing Returns applies here. Also, would the expensive clubs make an average golfer that much better? They may save a few strokes but overall, but I’d say that it’s relative to the experience of the golfer.

Clubs wise you have to get fitted to play your best and for me these two are the best brands for irons.
@dannydonn83173 жыл бұрын
Maybe a little bit unfair. Yes at your level, spending the money is worth every penny. But to be fair a 300 quid set is for the beginner just to get them going. It would be interesting to see how I mod / high handicap player got on with something custom fitted vs a cheap starter set mind
@michael27823 жыл бұрын
The only "fair" test would be a high handicap golfer playing the same two sets. He/she wouldn't have your tremendous swing speeds, negating the effects of the much better shafts your clubs have. An even better test would be to have a $300 box set against a set of more expensive clubs off the shelf/rack with the same basic shaft's - regular/stiff or senior. My final thought is that no beginner cares much about cosmetics or sounds. That all said I really did enjoy the video and wish you an upcoming Merry Christmas.

The law of diminishing returns always applies. Yes, spending more will get you better quality, but the improvement will not be commensurate with the additional cost. This becomes more true the more you spend. Most important, you need to be good enough to get the best out of better kit. I've come to golf late in life (mid 60s) and have started with used, decent, but nothing special clubs, courtesy of eBay and the advice of a couple of golfing pals. My main sport (at which I am reasonably accomplished) is fly fishing. I own some very nice rods (Hardy and similar) but I didn't start out with them. I learned with more modest kit. When I did treat myself to high end rods, I appreciated and was able to use them properly. If you have, say, a couple of thousand to spend, spend a thousand on kit and the rest on lessons. You'll be better off in the long run.

I got one and I can see the potential that it will compliment my bag, but I’m struggling to get it to fly >200y with club speed around 100, and I’m pretty sure it’s my launch conditions/strike. B.) are these videos pre-putter fitting, or have you already settled on the Sik to stay in the bag? I was excited for the chance of you getting away from the arm lock, and that new stick you had fitted looked promising! 3.) Great video as always!

Hey Pete, love this video but would love to see you and an 18 handicapper test both sets. I imagine (I may wrong) that the Wilsons are probably more forgiving for the high handicapper.

Thanks Peter, You and Rick are proving that all is takes are decent clubs and a lot of actual time on the course to get good scores. You can't buy talent.

I second that thought, get good second hand clubs rather than new crappy ones, though they do have a place for people who aren’t sure if they like the game or not. They’re easy to get and cheap, but that’s the only positive i find in them 😄

Great video as always Pete! I would love to see you do a comparison like this. Instead of two sets have three sets of clubs. Yours, a stock cheap set, then the same cheap set but fitted to your specs. Curious if there would be more of a middle ground in performance. Love these cheap equipment vs name brand videos. It's always interesting to see what all that money does and doesn't help with.

I wanna see a tour pro play pete with a cheap set while Pete has his clubs and see what happens

Not going on the bag??? If I were you Pete I’d keep the putter. Some of the best putting I’ve seen from you for a while.

Tbh I’m broke atm and wanted to get into playing golf so I’ve bought some second hand clubs online for £90 so im guessing they aren’t quite as good as these 3K + clubs 😂 but hopefully they do me :) I got a driver, 3 Wood, Hybrid not sure which I can’t see any number just says MD Golf?, irons 5-SW and a club just says 52 on it so that’s a gap wedge right? And a putter, they’re in decent nick so get me out playing anyway in a sport I couldn’t afford to play otherwise without cheap options, need a bag though.
