I just bought a brand new set of Wilson D9 Forged, 5-GW for $500. They look and feel amazing. Worth every penny and so much more affordable than buying a new set of the big brands. I couldn't be happier.

Exactly! I'm a mid-handicaper, but I bought a set of forged Mizunos JPX 921 SEL because I like how they look and feel and they are classic lofts. Since I have good clubhead speed, all the more "helping" irons were going way too far and creating a huge gap at under 140 yds for me. I really do enjoy the feedback of the more bladed irons and accept the loss in performance when I miss hit them. Makes the pure shots that more rewarding :)

@@ede93 I don't even think it's about hcp. I think it's trajectory. If you can get enough height with an MB and it doesn't terrify you on a cold morning, play it. I'm a 15 and I play MP 243s. Beautiful high ball flight. I get more GIR than my buddies who all play more forgiving irons.

Finally got fitted for my first set of irons - TM P790s - 5I-AW. The right length, stiffness, weight of shaft, and heads have made a world of difference to my ball striking…I can consistently square them up, get more out of a mis-hit, and have discovered a nice little draw to my ball flight. Getting a fitting is game-changing!

Moving to a muscle backed iron improved my game. Mostly from the extra practice I had to put in, and the motivational boost I got from wanting to master something that was a bit more difficult. Not that I'll ever be a master of the irons, ha ha, but the confidence that they inspire when addressing the ball for a cut or fade as opposed to SGI shovels I've used previously.... Totally worth it. Dropped my HC from 20 to 8 in two seasons of working my butt off. Blade irons with corded grips and no glove is a great teaching tool. Old Titleist 695mb's in my bag, and no notions of swapping them out any time soon.

Put a set of Taylormade Tour Pref MBs (2014) in the bag at Christmas. Dropped my handicap from 32 to 21 so far this year. Focusing on contact and learning how to improve it, as well as managing my misses, has helped me improve the most.

@@Cannimal I spent hours in the garage during winter with a net and a striking board working on the same thing. My old swing was a fade and bad shots were always a slice. My natural swing now is a baby draw. The data from an iron fitting a few years ago helped quite a bit as well.

I'm a 2 hcper and last year, after 10 years of playing, I decided to really invest into my golf for the first time. I spent money from my summer jobs and put them into my first fitting. After fitting, those guys made and sold me ,,my ideal set of new irons" for lot of money. But after 3-4 months of playing them, I just started to feel uncomfortable w them.. they made me shorter, less consistent and also two shafts I broke or damaged just w swinging. I did feel like Lord Voldemord w the Elder Wand. They were amazing clubs, but just didnt listened to me. So after 6 months after fitting I sold them and after that I bought for a 300 dollars a second hand Mizuno JPX 850 forged.. 8 years old, little bit scratched.. but now I'm playing the best golf ever, shooting around par every round and feel so much confidence w my game and w my irons. So I have a very best proof, that second hand clubs could be the best option for you! 😍Have a nice game!

I think golfers should understand lofted vs de-lofted irons too. De-lofted clubs appear to be superior because they go farther, but that doesn't mean they are better for your game. They have their place for certain golfers. As my swing improved, I sold the de-lofted clubs for standard.

It's a stupid hustle tactic. If I were to replace my iron set with half the new sets on the market, I would need to go from 4 wedges to 5 or 6, because everything is 4-8 degrees stronger. "200 yards? Better get the 9 iron out..."

Agree with it all, except perhaps point #7, Pete. If the score is your only focus, then yes, I agree. But if the score is secondary to enjoying your golf, or perhaps just a by-product of it, then buying irons that you aspire to play is perfectly OK! I play clubs I shouldn't be playing (skill-wise), but I enjoy my golf more because I'm using them. A shot, or two or three, extra on the score/handicap isn't as important to me as loving the clubs I'm using.

I think with rise of brands like Takomo, Sub70, etc I think brands like Taylormade, Ping, and Titleist well start to take notice. Not saying they are going to outright slash their prices. But there will probably be some offerings that are maybe 100 or 150 more for a set to try and take some of that market. When you have pros walking playing with these direct to consumer brands the big dogs will notice.

The most memorable iron shots I have ever hit (the shots we all have in our memory bank) have been with older Mizzy MP69 Blades. Spot on flushed, perfect ball flight and landed within feet of the pitch mark while being directly on the yardage. The shots that keep us all coming back. While they awesome to play, colder mornings during fall golf season here in Calgary (5-9 degrees C) do not like thin blade strikes. LOL. I've blended with MP69 8-9 and MP53 CB 4-7. Perfect blend for me.

As a fitter I can confirm it does make you seem psychotic when you come in to get fit for clubs when you can’t consistently get the ball off of the ground and like he said when we have to give you tips just to even make contact because you are better off spending that money on lessons and not new clubs. later you can come back to me and I’ll gladly help you. But it just feels useless to get clubs when I can barely trust a single shots data. It makes my job so much harder, and it feels like you are time for the both of us. You’d be so surprised how often these things happen.

By pure chance Pete I’ve picked up my 5-GW ZX4’s today. My first set of fitted irons. I’d love to see you do a review on them. Something else I’d like to see which not many content creators seem to have covered is forgiving irons for those with faster swing speeds that aren’t absolute rocket ships. I’ve been playing 2 years, have decent speed but have the inconsistency of a relatively new golfer. At the moment I’m considering after a few rounds of testing of maybe having the clubs de-lofted a little. Not every mid-high handicapper swings a 7 iron at 70-80mph but there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of equipment aimed at these. Lifelong Mizuno's blades player here. Tried many brands but nothing quite hit that same sweet spot, pun intended, until when I've bought my first set of Srixon. Even better than Mizuno.

Been playing golf since I was probably about 13-14 years old, I'm currently 45 years old. I keep to my cavity back irons like Cobra, Ping, Taylormade. Plus some of my clubs are probably about 20 years old, which I grew up using and playing with. They may not be the longest, but they work just as good as modern-day stuff. I don't need or want blade irons or super shiny. I'm not about looks, I'm more about forgiveness and function.

Cobra forged irons are criminally underrated. Play the Fly Z Pros and feel as good as any Mizunos I've tried in the past. And, they are cheaper than other big box brands.

I don’t play them, but I would steer anyone I know who was looking for a great value towards the Maltby clubs from The Golfworks. Especially if you are near central Ohio and can go there for the fitting too. I have not hit the newer TE+ which is their most traditional head, but the TS1 IM, TS4, and definitely the TS3 are fantastic for what they cost. I think Maltby’s have always been ok and a good option to save some money, but this current generation is truly unreal and I think they finally have the looks to match the play, which they certainly did not before.

I have about 30 sets of irons and rarely use the same set twice in one season. You know, because adding a challenge to golf is always a good decision. I’ve been surprised how similarly I score with each. My best scores have come from Wilson Staff FG-17s, MacGregor 1025M v-foils, and 99 Hogan Apex. My worst scores are with 120 year old hickories.

The biggest thing to do, is get fitted. Learning on clubs that do not fit you will create some terrible habits. If you can't afford that, go with PING and their color scale. Real easy to figure out. A forgiving club will only get you so far without practice. If you have time to practice, don't be afraid do go with the blade, but it will take some time to get better.

I used to play PXG 0311P irons but had a set of P7TW blades on the office wall.. now the P7TW’s are in my bag and I’m loving them.. not the best ball striker btw, but this irons suit me better than the PXG’s

I like Taylormade and ping. Love the 2014 Taylormade MC tour preferred, ping s55, ping iblade. I don’t like any other clubs. I especially do not like the new hollow iron sets.

Irons react to turf differently than mats. If you are serious, insist your iron fitting be done on actual turf. It can be done.
