I bought the Takomo 301 combo set at the start of this season as an 18-20 hcp. Everyone told me they would be too unforgiving to hit at my skill level, but I never felt that way about them. The feedback they give on miss-hits has helped me improve my game, and there's just no substitute for the feeling you get from a blade when you pure it. After playing with them all summer, I've never felt more comfortable over the ball, and my hcp is coming down fast. Highly recommend!

great review...i got my takomo 101 irons in October of 2022, kind of by accident...i was getting back into golf after almost 20 years away and was fit locally that summer for some PING irons...oversized grips, regular flex graphite shafts, one degree upright...was told they'd arrive in 4 weeks or less...in the intervening 8 weeks it took before i called my local shop to find out why the PINGs were late, I saw a lot of youtube reviews of Takomo...PING didn't contact my shop even though they didn't have the grips (indefinite backorder?) so I cancelled my order, saved $600, got my Takomo 101s built to my specs, with Fujikura Atmos shafts and fell in love with the company...last irons i'll probably ever own...they're amazing!

14:06 I’m not really sure what you are on about, that the reason why the clubs are cheaper is due to a lack of R&D! That is absolutely absurd. Taylormade irons cost the exact same… to the box stores… who then mark them up for profit. Which there is nothing against this other than the fact that new irons cost $1400 now! Direct to consumer takes the largest markup out of the equation and that… and that reason alone… is why they are cheaper. These clubs have no R&D any more than Mizuno, Taylormade, or Titleist have R&D with forged irons. Game improvements with endless basing and marketing ploys take time to produce their gimmicks. The main reason I have an issue with them is that you get one shaft option and you can’t get customer fit! This is the biggest issue in the market is not getting custom fit! I would highly recommend anyone buying these to buy the heads only, find a shaft you like and have them built up hitting similar irons with the same shaft with your loft and lie. Rick… you seriously missed this point on why they are cheaper and what the main issue is. As a teaching pro, you have been a huge advocate for getting lessons and getting custom fit.
@SonnyBurnett-sc6ed2 ай бұрын
Nah. He’s right. R&D Engineering is quite important. These direct market copies may play ok, but top tier clubs have original engineering that makes them more likely to be forgiving than direct market clubs. And prolly better ultimate performance too. Copying only results in some or most of the performance. Not all of it.
@angelam69022 ай бұрын
@@SonnyBurnett-sc6ed Copying saves R&D money but it comes with its own risks. Kirkland is currently defending itself in a lawsuit about patent infringement in their P790 copies and will probably end up paying a settlement.

I really don’t get why a “forgiving “ iron would have a stronger loft , when most high handicap players don’t have a fast swing and would benefit from a standard or weaker loft to hold the green and probably get more distance because of the loft with a slower swing
@FatihPekbas2 ай бұрын
Because most high handicappers are scooping the ball and make a weak lofted club even weaker (more dynamic loft) and by that lose distance.
@moonface9782 ай бұрын
@@FatihPekbas that makes sense 👍 there are an awful lot of high handicappers though who have trouble with stronger lofted clubs also , which is I suppose why they make high launch clubs for hackers as well

Golf brands have always stole ideas from other brands but the main price difference has to comes with the millions of dollars spent on pro sponsorship that certainly trickels down to, and out of the end user's wallets. It would be interesting to see what pros would be using without any sponsorship money or perks from the big brands. Great review, thanks for the honesty.

15 h’cap - I swapped out Wilson D9’s for 101’s and whether it’s mental or real, I dropped 4-5 shots a round straight away. They look great in the bag and I have absolute confidence in them. Due to heavy shipping costs to uk they top out at £550 and make sure you answer the questions before ordering to get the best out of on line fitting.

I have a set of 101's and it has helped me a ton. I am fairly new to golfing, but I used to play baseball so it was hard to transition from a baseball swing to a golf swing. With some practice and patience, I thought it was time to buy a good set of clubs. The Takomo's have greatly improved my ball strike and boosted my confidence in playing. And it was affordable! Thanks for the review Rick! Now I am certain I made a good choice!

I did it, pulled the trigger on a combo set with the KBS Tour shaft and oversize grips and I must say these clubs are unreal, my gapping is much tighter through the MB’s and my spin rates are dialled in across the board. Haven’t hit other MB’s a ton but the ability to shape and control flight is impressive. I give the combo set a 10/10 and would recommend to any lower handicap looking to make the jump to MB’s

Rick, I'm sure you won't read this but I so admire the balance and integrity of your conclusions. These irons are great but they are rraping the benefits of money we have all spent on big brands over the years. Ping, Titleist, Mizuno, Taylor Made, etc., have spent hundreds of millions (maybe billions) on R&D and engineering. It's important that we remember that.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I am in the market for new irons and they are so darn expensive. But after 18 years of playing my Big Bertha irons it is time for a change. I have looked at Takomo mostly because of the price. I am a short golfer so need a flatter lie angle and you can customize your set with steel or graphite shafts (with several options each), different grips, shaft lengths and lie angles. My only issue is I can't hit them to know if they are right for me. I get the pioneering brands and all, but I am also all for inspiration. Luckily, I have a local golf equipment center that does a massive amount of business so they are good on price. They also hold several sales each year including a massive one in the winter that they house in an athletic fieldhouse with an indoor football field. At that sale they have a ton of last year's models at steep discounts. Their head club fitter will even work with you to narrow down your choices before the sale so you can usually find a set that you tested and like. And he'll even adjust the lie angle for you after the sale. All good so that is probably the way I'll go but if I don't find something there then I have some confidence now that I could go get the Takomo's and be happy. Great work Rick!
