What I love about this is that you are staying on target of the Quest for the Open. Many other (big) channels loose focus on what attracted many of the viewers. Whilst the circumstances are different and more difficult - I love how you try to tie back the various routines and 'things out there' back to that ultimate goal. Please keep on going!! :-)

It’s crazy how creative you are on these videos. You are truly one of the most unique and fun voices on KZbin. I think it would be cool to get some of the other KZbin people to try this and do a little FSX comp between channels with the focus band. See what differences exist between you guys!

As a pool/snooker player in addition to golfing, I can fully appreciate and understand the mental side of the game. One book I read about the mental aspect of sports like this is called “Pleasures of Small Motions”. It was written billiards-specific, but has a lot of techniques I use on the course for thinking through shots, because pool and golf both have preshot routines and table/course management.

It just clicked for me now, every time I go hitting balls into my backyard net, range or simulator just for the fun of it I’m not outcome driven I put a really nice smooth and overall better swing/strike compared to when I tell myself “this ball needs to go exactly 140 yards” “this ball needs to carry the bunker”, even when I’m thinking “swing smooth” its generally crap. The moral of the story, let your body do what it’s been trained to do. Because subconsciously it is capable of doing exactly what you want it to do without worrying about swing mechanics or outcomes. Great video Pete!

Wow! This is mental. At today’s practice session I did deep breathing before striking each ball whilst focusing on the back of the ball (spot I want to strike) and had a GREAT practice session - I was hitting straight and even drawing the ball instead of slicing it. Very interesting Pete. This is an area which is definitely not covered often on instructional videos. But I am convinced this plays a large part in playing better golf. I find that I play a lot better when I focus on on one thing like turning my hips or "hitting with my left shoulder" Although these swing-thoughts might have some technical merit on their own I think the effect of freeing my mind and letting me be "in the moment"might be even bigger.

The zone hasn't happened for me with golf but there were days when I played uni level tennis 15 years ago where I just felt I could put the ball exactly where I wanted, particularly serving, without any mental effort at all. Same playing rugby as a goalkicker, there were days when I just did not have to think about it. Really interesting stuff.

Pete, on the first set you were more focused up to the first pull shot, then you had the negative don't go left thoughts. On the second set you looked more focused on the mid irons, which were better. It could have been you weren't striking well on the first set, but if you can overcome some negative swing thoughts and produce all shots like your first 7or8 shot in the first set, then you will soar and your game will be like your swing, bloody lovely. This subject fascinates me for sports science. 😍😍

I used to play basketball growing up and until my late 20s on a decent level. The best games I played I never remembered making decisions feel particularly stressed, just acting on what happened and keeping focus on the the task at hand. Very much being in "the flow". An absolute prerequisite for this was to be in excellent conditioning; great stamina, strength and preparation. I was never able to get to that point of flow (or performance for that matter) when my body and technique weren't at its best.

Daniel Kanehman the author of 'Thinking Fast & Slow' says that flow state is actually on the ragged edge of right/left brain. This makes sense if you think about it, you need the analytical side to measure the shot and swing, but then the right side to 'see' and 'feel' the shot. I've done a lot of work and research into this, 'Zen Golf' is also another great resource, and I recommend meditating, as the state is very similar to flowstate.

Hey Pete. Take a look at a technique called anchoring. It would go really well with this and is a great tool for golf.

makes good sense... for me in any case. I usually do okay during comps. In major club comps or playing divisional I spent the night before going through the course, setting up a game plan and making everything ready for the tournament. Gets me the feeling of, well, quieting my left side during the round, allowing me to get in and stay in the zone, as I KNOW, I have done the analysing the day before and allowing me to just "flow". beeing a left-hander, if you listen to many experts that is, I should/could find it easier to access my right side, and I am more of creative and artistic person so it comes somewhat natural for me to "let go" 😁

I wonder if listening to different genres of music could play a part in pre-game mentality. Maybe chilled out music helps relax your mind, maybe dance tracks get you into a rhythm, maybe metal makes you try and hit the ball harder etc etc

I think a lot of golf is actually mental strength, I mean a lot of us amateurs would worry about our swings, our duffs, shanks etc but for you, despite you obviously work hard on your technique etc but I'd say if you can get the mental side working, find that happy place I think you'll see dramatic results, looking forward to seeing how this progresses, great video matey

The “ooOooOoo” sound makes it sound like you’re getting haunted by golf ghosts. Like I need to be judged by others again.... Jokes aside, it’s cool seeing the band go from green to red to green again. And it’s interesting to see the last few shots on the first set stayed red which ended up not having desireable results. Thanks for sharing! Mental and focus is a huge part of golf

Totally get the "zone" thing. I recently finally got proper cleated shoes and they've been throwing me off with my swing/confidence etc. A week or two before, I noticed that I was sometimes getting into the "zone" I guess. I would hit the ball well and pretty close to how I wanted to and how I imagined it, but I was bewildered at HOW I actually managed to do it (like mechanically). So I figured I shouldn't think about it too much and move onto the next shot I would end up hitting next.
@killerzify13 жыл бұрын
Had a very similar thing when I did bowling for 15 years any time I got on the approach is follow the same setup and it put me in that "zone" where I couldn't hear anything unless someone called my name and I was focused on one point 15 foot down the lane of where I wanted the balled to pass over it's a thing but it can also be very hard to get into if you don't have that setup that can put you in it or there is something that breaks your pattern

I believe I am a mix of both: I like to know how many yards to the pin, I like to work on my swing mechanics and I analyse the course (water, bunker, etc). BUT, I also think a lot about what I want my shot to look like. I see it in my head. I like to "see" what the ball will do when it's in the air and when it lands on that spot I picked in the fairway (I'm a 50/50 guy so... rough or fairway). I also "look" at player's (and mine) swing to see what it looks like without focus on technique. For example: I hate Bryson's swing. I get that there's so much going on but to me, it's not appealing. On the flip side, Westwood's swing is a beauty while I believe there is a much thought going into the shot as there would be for Bryson... Even for you Pete, I don;t like what your Driver swing looks like. But when you hit your wedges, I like it. Looks what a wedge shot looks like in my head. Anyway, love the studio, I am jealous. For real.
