Hi Pete First of all, good luck in China! I have a question about the 2NT where you chose not to finesse the queen of spades. Am I missing something or isn't this just one of the common misconceptions (Woolsey explained this quite well in one of his book about playing matchpoints)... One should play for what ever is the percentage play here because people playing 2NT are essentially only competing with the ones who ended up in the same contract. The ones who bid 3NT either: always get a better score if the game makes, OR always get a worse score if the game goes down (extra undertrick) At the same time, for example, taking a safety play in a slam might be perfectly reasonable if you assume most of the field will not reach it. You will only lose some matchpoints to those who also bid the slam and took the extra trick. Meanwhile you will save a ton of matchpoints (against those only in game) if the safety play was necessary to make the slam contract.

Hi Martin Here I thought there is a 50% chance the finesse will fail and I'll get a better score than all the people in 2NT who took the finesse as they might not get any more tricks. With that in mind I am now also considering comparing my overall score where I still want to beat the people in 3NT as I am trying to win the event. I think I am comparing scores of approx like 10% and 60% taking finesse and 30% and 80% not taking the finesse. I feel like the chance of winning the event is higher by not taking the finesse.

You can make 1st hand 5C by simple squeezing against West's H and D...

Hearts were splitting 3-3 anyway, so the declarer had 4 heart tricks after West made a mistake by switching to a small heart on trick two. If you meant that West could be squeezed with the SQ and DQJ then that one is nearly there. Unfortunately the blockage in clubs does not allow us to cash all of the clubs while preserving the ace of diamonds in dummy as the necessary entry for squeeze to work.
