Bought a couple of these, and the flagstop from Bench Dogs and added them to some extruded aluminium that I have. Added a sticky metal tape measure from Axminster (cut to start at the correct point) and bought the Bench Dogs guide rail dogs for my track and I can go from workbench to perfect cutting station in moments. Brilliant design, easy to use, not expensive and consistent length, 90 degree cuts. Just such a great solution - thanks for demonstrating these. And every single time I place the guide rail and track on the bench I know I'm going to cut accurate lengths.

Having ordered my second flagstop this one has the aluminium plate fitted. Having tested both, the plastic one does have a small amount of flex but as someone else has commented you do have to be a little heavy handed for it to be an issue. The aluminium one is much more rigid, preferring this type. 👍🏻

I think this is excellent, I made my own MFT for my work shop using the UJK from axminster. It works great but lacks a drop down guide rail for my plunge saw. If bench dogs uk did a hinged holder for guide rail, we'd be half way to having the perfect work bench. £600 for a festool MFT is out of my reach. The is also a company in Northampton that Ive seen on Ebay that now sell MFT table top replacements in birch plywood £50. Love your videos and your buddies (Gosforth handyman)
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tony! Yes, lots of folk who have big enough CNCs are doing MFT tops now - the guys in Wrexham have been doing them for a while too! The problem I’m running into with the hinged rail is that it may be a Festool patent - really hard to find out without spending money though! 👍👍

Hello peter, Thanks again for another top vid on these new items I'm about to build a 3 metre MFT style bench in the garage. the metal profile is great but annoyingly to big. the mft fence is can be flipped but is only..... well at a guess 30mm one way and 12mm the other i want a big long fence that can be removed, flag stops the lot but folding down the track across the last 150mm of the 20mm high profile to cut a ... let's say 3mm piece of MDF seems like a bit o a nightmare to much flex and area for the blade to wander into the piece I know I could pack up but again too much faffing about and risk of slipping does Festool do a long fence?

I have been buying Festool stuff at various tool and estate auctions. I have gotten three of the Festool rails and finally got an MFT. I have done two things that appear very good. One, I added one of the rails to the fence on my Radial Arm Saw. (I know, I know....I bought it over fifty years ago when I was a kid and they were all the rage.) I had to remake the flag to reach down to the table and added a tape measure to the rail. Very useful. And a friend and I made tall dogs with a bolt inthe top and added them to the track saw track and shorter versions I added to the Festool rail. I removed the hinges. The advantage is I can "store" the track and rail on the surface of the table and confined in the perimeter, making moving and storing the table much easier and more compact. Also, using the dogs bolted to the slot in the tract moves the cut line between the holes.

Hi Peter, I bought them all immediately as it’s a brilliant idea and started using them in my own bench. However I have noticed more and more how tight them seem to be getting when compared to my veritas, Axminster and other dogs. My bench board is Medite MDF so should be fine but I am now having to fight to get the dogs out so I got my Peter Sefton Caliper out and lo and behold, the Benchdogs are .2 millimetres bigger. You may want to do a comparison and speak to the guys to see if they know about this?
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil. I’ll check with Ralph and see if he’s had any other comments - is your bench board an MFT original or a third-party / home made piece? Not trying to point the finger, just to understand where the issue may lie. I haven’t had any problems with mine in an ‘original’ MFT, just FYI. 👍👍

I think the key here is that BenchDog are still a small company. There should be a saying or something like "the more they grow, the more they think they know". Picked up some of the fence dogs (thanks for the heads up Peter) and some of the bench top protectors too. The bench protectors are really cool looking but quite shallow which I find makes pulling them out of the bench holes a bit of a chore sometimes. Should've got some cookies instead I think. Like that they doing a flag stop too but will wait for a metal version I think.

Haha, possibly Tom, possibly. I’m reminded of the Lotus 7 sports car, originally sold as a kit to avoid sales tax (pre -VAT). HMC&E (or whatever they were then) complained that it came with a manual on how to build it, as any ‘enthusiast’ should have the knowledge to do this themselves. The Govt. upheld the complaint and insisted that it be sold without a manual. So Lotus sold it with a ‘service guide’ that showed you how to take it apart... 😂😂👍👍

My advice to others is to order, price be damned, extrusions, screws, knobs and nuts from one vendor to ensure all the flippin’ parts play well with each other. Good grief. Metric vs imperial vs Series 5, 20, and so forth. Yet another language to learn. What a painful bowel movement. Love the concept, bought the products and now I’m quite hosed trying to cobble teeny-weenie bits and parts together and make one frickin’ fence 😝.
@normanbott6 жыл бұрын
Looks good. I did notice a bit of flexing of the 'plastic' flag on close-up - could that be a problem if you're working quickly? Maybe aluminium / steel for the flag? Not trying to be critical, just what I saw on the video.

I think the conclusion here is you need a "MDPEHDABSWTFBBQ" 3d printer so you can just make this stuff to purpose. On a serious note, it looks like you get a fair bit of flex at that length. Perhaps one either side of the block, linked, would add some rigidity.
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
That’s wha It said - plasticky stuff 😂😂 Crikey, everyone’s going fanatical about the flexing! There’s a bit, but it’s consistent and hasn’t been a problem for consistent repetitive cuts, especially if you’re aware of it. But there’s apparently one planned with a stainless flag 👍👍

Hi Peter... I actually got the flag stop with my order from Benchdogs and indeed have found it very useful. Following on from your comment about small company responsiveness I would suggest a small criticism or at least something to be aware of. Being made from high density plastic or whatever you have to be a little careful when pushing material up to the stop because being a little heavy handed can cause it to deflect especially when cutting 18mm or wider material. It may only be a matter of 1 or 2 mm but when you are trying for perfectly aligned faces it can be a little frustrating. Perhaps this may be an issue with all these types of stops, but I didn’t notice it as much with the festool supplied stop
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
There is a little bit of flex in the acrylic flags - there's a metal flag planned apparently - but I haven't found it to be an issue in use, as long as you're aware of it and treat it with a little bit of respect. But Ralph is aware and has improvements planned. 👍👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop I've just taken delivery of the flagstop and fencedogs yesterday. I've not had chance to test things properly yet, but there did seem to be a bit of play in the plastic 'flag'. Craig Coe Thanks for letting me know Craig. As per my response above, there is a little bit of flex in the acrylic flag; I haven’t had an issue with this and as log as you’re aware of it then it shouldn’t be an issue in normal use. I understand what this does and how the flag stop works, I'm struggling to work out how this would help with repeat cuts on my custom made portable MFT table top, are you saying you still need the fixed position festool track aswell. If so can you do a video on that to show how that would work on a portable top and where to buy parts to attach it. Thanks, Colin
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
How are you making cuts on your MFT-style top now? Benchdogs? Raildogs? I’m assuming you’d carry on doing the same, but the addition of a fence and stops means you can make repetitive cuts easily. 👍
@watchthisspace6886 жыл бұрын
Hi, I do not have a fixed position festool track I've been using the festool parallel guide which does have a stop for repeat cuts but this is only good for short lengths. I have made enquires about the hinged system for the track but it looks like it would be cheaper to buy the MFT table than to get the bit to adapt my custom one.

Metal flag stops? Post a video,I'm waiting to order but want to see if the flex problem has been addressed. 💪🏻
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
As soon as I have a set to test, I will. But just to be clear, I’ve been using the acrylic flag stops without any problem at all. The ‘flex problem’ seems to be in the minds of people who’ve never used them. Just sayin’ 👍👍
@ThekiBoran3 жыл бұрын
It'd be nice if Benchdogs used a Ruwi type flag stop. It's super beefy with virtually no deflection.

This is fantastic. I keep a large stock of mdf sheets at my shop. This video means I can probably buy a festool router and track to make the top (amongst other things of course) and all the gubbins, for the same price as the mft 3 👍 Incidentally Peter, which router do you use with your lr32? I have a trend t11 fixed into a table, but I'm looking to buy a router for off table use. This is the perfect excuse 😂
@10MinuteWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
cheers Ben! I use an old OF900 dedicated to the LR32, but if you’re buying new today then the OF1010 would be my choice - great router! 👍👌

I notice the plastic flag stop flexing when you push the board against it. That interferes with my ocd :0)

In which case, you should probably wait for the metal-flagged version👍👍
@GeeTheBuilder6 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Great video as always. I’m a bit worried about saying the next bit, you seem a bit irritated by some comments, but I hope you take this as it’s meant. In the video when you pushed the wood up to the stop the “plasticy thing” bent back and then rebounded. Now, if that happens each time consistently great, but what if it’s a heavy long bit of wood with a lot of inertia to overcome to allow the plasticy thing to bounce back? Do you get this slight bounce with metal stops? The whole idea of stops is of course that they are perfectly repeatable. How have you found them to be in terms of repeatability? Due to the visible bounce? I’d like to order some but the 3d printed bits put me off due to this apparent bounce due to the flex. Should I be concerned? Hope the comment is taken constructively:) Cheers Graham
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham. No, not irritated at all, lol. Yes, there is a slight flex with these acrylic flags, and yes it is absolutely consistent in my experience, so repeatable cuts are easy, especially if you’re aware of it. I understand that there will be a stop available in due course with a stainless steel flag, but I’ve had the current version for a little while and haven’t had any issues with making consistent, repetitive cuts. 👍👍

Peter Millard good stuff! It would make my life so much easier to have one of these in combination with the fence dog things 👍 Screwing a bit of 2x4 to the bench each time for a fence has not been the best approach - not sure why someone would thing it is lol :)
@davidfarnall32116 жыл бұрын
Until he comes up with a metal flag, maybe you could cut down a steel "T" repair plate and replace the plastic flag with that? Just a thought.
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Thanks David. I don’t actually have a problem with the acrylic flag tbh - there’s a little bit of flex in it but nothing to bother me if used with a bit of nous 👍👍

The only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on this setup is a hinged guide rail adaptor and the guiderail receiver/clamp. It would be amazing if these two components could be designed as benchdog components, so that I mount the hinge part on the back row of holes, and the receiver anywhere (probably the front set of holes). UKJ does a parf dog with a rail clip, and this lets you register your rail to any set of holes, but I would love a hinged system, ala festool style, only based off of the holes on the top and not the rails on the sides. Do you think such a system is possible?
@10MinuteWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Possible? Yes, absolutely. But I’m trying to find if there are any copyright/patent implication in the hinged rail idea, seeing as how it’s ‘so obvious’ and yet nobody else is doing it.👍
@ThePhiloctopus6 жыл бұрын
That could be it. I've wondered for a while now why nobody has done it; the only thing I came up with was that it was technically impossible for a reason I hadn't considered. I'm probably going to give the parfdog/rail clip a try, and if I don't like that I may have to bite the bullet and get Festool's MFT3. I know I won't regret it, but my Australian wallet is already crying over a $1,335 table with holes in it.

Here is the file for the 3d printed part www.thingiverse.com/thing:921862, I have printed my own, and fashioned an aluminium flag stop so no bend. Now to add an adhesive tape measure... These definitely do fit perfectly to the MFT3 rail, as that is what I have, no overhanging, touch the table top perfectly. You must have an old version? I bought a 3d printer so I could go through and print all thingiverse festool items, which appears to be what fencedogs are doing as well, and selling them. By the way, you can match festool green in PLA and print little green knobs to match! shop.3dfilaprint.com/filaprint-apple-green-premium-pla-175mm-3d-printer-filament-1267-p.asp

Unlimited amounts of uses for this style track & guide if your imagination is up for the challenge. It's a lot more sturdy than T-track. 8 feet of T-track would need the ends and a couple of intermediate fixings to keep it from bending but not this stuff, this looks 4 times more rigid and wouldn't need any fixings to keep it straight. I can see sliding table saw sleds router sleds router guides tool guides with glide and slide systems. I just wonder if you have a wall bench and 2 rows of this parallel sunk into the workbench surface the whole length, would it be possible to slide your tools along it? For example if you fitted all of your machines with feet that fit this track Mini Bandsaw, Chop Saw, Drillpress, Compound MiterSaw, Mortiser, RADIALARMSAW, small router table, you know, the usual culprits that need fixed to a bench. Just reach under the bench grab the machine slip it onto this track lock it down use it slide it up the bench, grab another machine lock it down use it slide that out of the way, grab another machine, just keep flinging them up there sliding them back and forth. I'm thinking a 16 foot long bench with this track sunk into it. My imaginations working overtime here lol. I think its a brilliant system for locking machines down that you would normally screw down onto your bench. Any thoughts? Yes Vote Y? No Vote N? ☺

Now that sounds like a plan Peter. Camera stability rigs or tracks are something I never thought of. Brilliant ideas flying back and forth on this aluminium extrusion stuff. We use it on the railway to hold up the copper overhead wires but it's sizes are 6x2 5x3 4x2 and as long as we need it to be. Special orders obviously and only used on the railway. A 4 meter length of 5x3 extrusion with its components is about £700 lol. Next time your looking onto an electrified line take a look up at each stanchion and you'll see what I'm taking about. I've got a Nikon p900 Coolpix I'm still trying to suss the bugger out after a year! Maybe I'll get it a bit of aluminium track at some point in it's life lol.

you are giving a horrible advice. At 6.06 you can clearly see the flag stop that bends under the hit of the piece to be cut. Why? Just because it is plastic made. Never, NEVER use a plastic stop!

I have their metal ones and they also flex, (and I did let them know). The flag stops, even the metal ones, are the weak link in the system. They need something like a Ruwi flag stop.
