In this video I compare the #Festool 488030 fixed #clamp or surface clamp to a cheap pair of clamps from #BangGood, to see how they hold up. Enjoy!
NB: BangGood clamps were £26 at the time of purchase, current price seems to be ~£29.

Stanley Workmate also made a surface clamp "system" (called a horizontal clamp) and a hold down. Still run into them in the used market. Not really 20mm or 3/4-inch they are unique.

I still have 4 sets of the Stanley surface clamps. They fit snug in a 20mm hole and no lift off as seen by these newer clamps. I nearly threw them, but having just made my first MFT with the Parf system they will prove useful.

Hi Peter, I bought a pair of the cheap ones (I don't remember if they were bangood but they are identical) as the Festool are crazy price for the amount if use I have. I find they're great if you are doing a load of repeat steps, when screwing them down works really well, but for single use the lifting is a pain and it's not worth the effort to screw down. Good value IMHO.

I thought you might find my experience with Banggood I have found they are intruding into other things I'm doing also when you do a search for an item they make go through hundreds of items before you get to the item you want I've been trying unsuccessfully to unsubscribe from the many emails they showered me with each day I've had to make them as spam . Been using these for about a year now. Reviewed them on my channel too. Apart from the issue you raise, I really get on with them. So much so I sold both my much more expensive and problematic Armor Tool (or Axiam...same clamp) linear clamps. Great for the money these. Thanks for another useful video Peter. I wonder if the heads on these could be modified or completely swopped out. Perhaps birch ply with some leather/cork on the ends? The question I'd have is; is there a head shape that would encourage a downward pressure on the workpiece (if there is, why didn't festool incorporate it? I find it hard to believe they didn't extensively test their clamps)

I was keen on Banggood, but I have had several different faulty clamps and they are a pain in the backside to deal with for warranty claims. For example, digital calipers that I bought had a random fault, which I didn't notice when I first got it. I complained a couple of months later and that ended in a long argument online, including the response that 'Every product has its natural life'! Eventually got a credit for nearly all the cost, but now only use them for things that can't go wrong (although even some guage blocks were delivered as imperial when I ordered metric). So, caveat emptor! You may be lucky, but probability of a problem is high.

I've had very mixed experiences using these cam clamps. Their practicality is very much dictated by the size of the workpiece. If you are just the wrong distance away from the nearest set of holes they can be infuriating to use. They have exactly the same lifting problems too at extended distances.

Hey Peter, you've got to test the new Bessey WNS. Height of the clamping parts is just 12mm, the workpiece isn't lifted at all, not a tiny bit and the clamps are so strong that I leave a small gap to the workpiece before engaging the lever, otherwise it's almost too tight. 😁

loves the bloopers at the end, I like listening to english people, they sound more refined. I have family in england. Thank you for your reviews as you give both objective and subjective information, but mostly objective which I trust. Much love from across the pond. I did have a question, if I were to get into the MFT style bench for a tracksaw I am planning on buying, how many quick ratcheting clamps (MFT style, bessey or festool) how many would you recommend? I decided my jobsite table saw is not as accurate as I want it to be, even with every modification or tweaks I could make, all I want is a straight edge as factory straight edges are a joke, so I am willing to to spend the cash for a tracksaw. Since my job is not dependent on it, I am thinking of the new KEBI from festool although i hate new battery platforms, but if I had to cut all day and thick material I would definitely go with mafel. Any advice would be great.

Seems a wide wooden shim, as thick as the clamp, maybe with sides that are slightly widest near the top edges, placed on either side of the workpiece (it can also be flipped for a different grip if the workpiece works better with that), can shorten the necessary clamp head extension effectively, with practically zero lift. I guess a shim width of half the hole spacing is generally best, but the ideal shim width depends on the piece. Two equal shims of 1/4 hole spacing could offer a more general fit or assist in avoiding sanding down the plastic clamp parts.

I wonder how many companies make a dog with a cam profile on the top, that way you can just twist the cam-dog to exert clamping pressure against the edge of a part. As it'd be a single piece, it should alleviate the lift-off issue, assuming the cam profile has enough reach for oddly sized workpieces.

I have the Walko and Chinese clamps and there are plenty of work arounds including wrapping some plumbers tape around the stem to get a really snug fit then there is almost no lifting therefore you don't need to clamp from underneath the table. Also use 16mm scrap pieces between the clamps and the stock. This solves the problem of the Chinese clamps being too thick. I paid $47AUD for the Chinese clamps compared to $200AUD for Festools and $90AUD for Walko. The Chinese clamps as far as I'm concerned do an equal job to the Festools for a quarter of the price. Its a no brainer! I find Festools price obscene

Another good informative video. Has any one just used two square top dogs like supplied with a 'workmate' and use a quick grip clamp in reverse ie pushing away rather than closing. It works ok and is cheap too. Not quite as quick to set up but does provide a firm grip dependant on direction the wood being worked on is forced but then just put another dog in that direction. I picked up a Walko bench after seeing this video recently after you mentioned the name and looking it up, its different but suits my needs.

Hi, interesting ! I was actually thinking of the issues i have at the moment without them. You know what you could do to combat the 'liftoff' you get when the 20mm hole is a bit far away? drill some 20mm intermediate holes and mark them so you know you dont get mixed up with the original 20mm holes. Or is there something I have not thought through about this idea? :)
@10MinuteWorkshop

Or just drill them slightly off-grid so it’s obvious?? Good idea! 👍👍

Suggestion for a quick DIY-hack, sand a couple of mills off the clamp tops with sandpaper to make them a custom thickness. Personally, I have always had good luck buying entirely mechanical products from Banggood and Aliexpress, especially when sorting by price and picking the "high quality" version of whatever it is they are copying (still often half the price or better compared to the genuine version). However, I have been less than impressed by Chinese electronics design (with some notable exceptions), obviously not as straight forward to copy.

Thanks Peter for another superb video. You certainly keep me coming back : ) It's really funny, but I looked at the Festool ages ago and they were £65 and I thought, "Mmm well, they are nice but way too expensive!" Just yesterday, I was pining for them and I checked and they are now £105 !! Way tooo much. So, I somehow managed to find this video and, lo and behold I saw them on Banggood's website and, as they say in Texas, "Ye aint gonna believe this!" I got them for the princely sum of £19.30 and........... two Festool knockoff lever ratcheting clamps for £12.60 each. Such a steal ! So, all of that for half the price of the Festool lateral clamping system......Yahoo !

Never seen the need for these. One edge against bench dogs. The other side with dogs + simple wedges, and/or any combination of both. Much quicker too, but then again I make wedges from any scrap I can salvage prior to binning it.

Should have mentioned too... On my CNC waste board, just add some screws and jam in some sacrificial wedges to hold the piece down, never seem to have issues with the work-piece lifting from the wasteboard.

That's what I was going to say! I like the festool ones but the board rise is an issue. I usually position the cam with a one or two mm spacer between it and the board I'm clamping, then remove the spacer before clamping down. I find the gap just allows for the perfect tightening that doesn't lift the board too much but holds in place well enough for most operations
