Apparently it was a comet and not an asteroid, my apologies. So that chamber would have been FAR MORE STABLE in a comet, right? I should double check my facts but it's too painful to go back through the show a second time.
@zephodb2 жыл бұрын
There is little difference between a comet and an asteroid for stability, due to the weak gravity that usually holds such objects together... however The main difference between asteroids and comets is their composition, as in, what they are made of. Asteroids are made up of metals and rocky material, while comets are made up of ice, dust and rocky material. So, this means that if it is a Comet, it is made up of ice/dust/rock... As opposed to Metals/Rock. c.c Remember how light and bouncy the Astronauts in our world were on the moon? Much worse than that due to the micro-gravity like 'oops I took a hard step and launched myself off the world' level of issues. >.>
@kathleenhensley59512 жыл бұрын
A comet is just a conglomeration of stone and ice that de-gasses when it approaches a sun. It's nearly but not quite the same thing, in more cases. If you saw an comet in the Oort cloud, it would look like asteroid. No, I don't think that a chamber in a comet would be far more stable, in fact, less so, at least, in the long run. Every time a comet approaches a sun it looses some ice in the form of gasses. Over many centuries, it will slowly become inert and no longer have enough ice to grow one of those lovely tails. I've always been a little confused about this, so pardon me, but I think sometimes the only thing holding a comet together (besides a wee bit of gravity) IS the ice, hence, they can fall apart. all this said, You still don't want to be hint with one, neither, do you want your planet hit. ZebhodB (he's just some guy, you know!) is right about composition and i read his description after mine.

One hypothesis is that the Earth was "seeded" with the primordial stuff of life by a bombardment of comets, which is one reason astronomers are so keen to study them, particularly their chemical reactions. Arthur C. Clarke definitely thought that life above the biological level could even live on a comet. Comets can last as long as planets, so long as the don't collide. They're a lot like a Kia Soul that way.

Its clear that Anson Mounts performance and to a lesser extent Rebecca Romijn is the best part of this show as it was during the season of Discovery he was in. That said SNW is a definite improvement over Discovery and most definitely over Picard and that alone is surprising considering Kurtzman is behind all of them. I wonder if the pushback they've been getting has finally gotten CBS to bring some pressure to bear and get Kurtzman to be more Trek focused? Did you know that Rebecca Romijn insisted that her character wear the short dress style outfit found in TOS? Originally Kurtzman had the women wearing the same masculine style outfits as the men but Rebecca Romijn insisted she be allowed to include the short dree style uniform so her character will be in the dress sometimes and other times in slacks like the men. In the interview I read about this she said she wanted her character to be feminine looking. Kudos to Rebecca Romijn!

I think they also need to clear up the chain of command. Pike is the captain, we know. Una is Number One, so first officer. But who's after her? It was unclear who exactly was in charge on the away mission. Was it La'an or Spock? Spock's a lieutenant at this point, I think, so is La'an senior to him? And why is Nurse Chapel acting like a doctor? They brought M'Benga on this show (jettisoning Dr. Boyce entirely, it seems), but Chapel is getting the screen time. Hopefully they flesh all of this out.

Deep Space 9 took Star Trek in a different direction than TOS and TNG. But they did so with 95% good writing and obeying lore. Writing on top of a franchise is awesome because of the built-in audience. But if you don't service that audience, you will LOSE your ratings and the existing fanbase revolts. The synopsis of this episode shows just how weak and pathetic the storytelling is. It's amazing how many time and cost-saving tools are available for Hollywood to use. But their writers and script approvals just suck.
@SuperEndiku2 жыл бұрын
DS9 was genius and even it lost a large number of TOS and TNG fans at the time. The writers of this show are desperately trying to not do another Discovery or Picard but they can't pull it off. I think one of the big reasons this new crap lasts so long and does so much damage is that the old creators never speak out. Call it Star Trek: The New Frontier or Star Trek: Gamma Quadrant. The ship would be bigger than the Galaxy class but would be the product of the combination tech from the Klingons, Feds and Romulans as a test case for future cooperation and alliances since they could forge a new friendship from their alliance in the Dominion war. Have the younger brother of Worf's dead mate who is also half human and half Klingon as the new captain but who is a throwback to ancient Klingons ways with red hair who like Spock has to merge his worlds as one. He has to navigate the different goals and politics of the different groups as well as explore unknown space....lol

"Being in the right place, at the right time" is a time-honored Star Trek convention; did Kirk's Enterprise ever really even have ONE failed mission (beyond not being able to start a war with the Klingons, in order to spite the Organians)? That said, if Pike's away teams are going to make the same kind of idiotic goofs that the "professionals" in Prometheus made, the crew, if not the show, is doomed. The point of training a crew in a organized service should be to take necessary, calculated, risks. The episode is just sort of a mishmash of TOS' "The Paradise Syndrome" and "For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky", so the writers have at least WATCHED Star Trek, even if they can't write for it.

@@NatashaEstrada - Yeah, but people dying as a result of contact with a space salt vampire (which no one has encountered before) able to perfectly disguise itself at will, aided and abetted by a Federation scientist that you're supposedly going there TO help isn't exactly the same kind of overtly dangerous exploratory mission we're dealing with here (or in Prometheus). After all, it WAS just supposed to be a matter of dropping off some supplies and doing a couple of medical exams, not visiting Transylvania by moonlight. On what basis would your "being careful" have saved your life when this thing attacks when you're alone, can appear as whatever will make you most vulnerable, and you don't know what's going on until it's too late? There's a difference between suddenly encountering Dracula out of nowhere and just "deciding" that the atmosphere is safe to breathe. I'm only asking that the crew use reasonable caution, not be psychics. Then again, if the creature had been able to wait until it could get the salt tablets instead of just attacking, we wouldn't have had a show.

All the elements of a good story were there, but just seemed like it was told in the wrong order or with the wrong setup. I'd rather have seen this episode start as what they thought was a junk rogue asteroid, Uhuru was included in the away mission cause she needs the experience for her training program and it was deemed low-risk. Why did they need to be on the asteroid? Mineral samples cause of some strange material readings maybe. While on the asteroid, the ship attempts to attach the thrusters and THAT is when the asteroid shields up with a dampening field and they're stuck. Now the crew sees a power source that didn't show up on sensors, goes looking for it, and finds the Egg. That to me would seem like a pretty complete first act that would then lend itself to Sam Kirk trying to be a cowboy and touch the egg out of desperation, why Uhuru is so afraid and feeling out of her depth cause this was just supposed to be a ride-along, etc. Much better setup and still allows them to use the alien side-plot to fill runtime.

Nice summary! Thanks for keeping an even keel on these. It gets way too easy for a lot of channels to just get into "hate bashing" for views. The material may stink, but just ranting that it does isn't as informative as commentary that jokingly points out what this series lacks in comparison to TOS, or where the plot seems to trip up. I grew up with Star Trek TOS in syndication, and the newest Trek shows just lack the fun and charm of the original series. I still think TOS had some amazing ideas in their episodes that never got fully explored, and I think my biggest issue with modern trek is that they don't seem to have any original ideas where it counts. Yes, okay, this is some new character, but what makes a good sci-fi show is GOOD SCI-FI ideas. This episode is just a mash-up of other similar Trek ideas of a living ship or benevolent, (yet not understood) space probe that communicates through music. My biggest criticism is that modern writers aren't good at making new products, (which they are self-aware enough to know) so they just keep trying to recycle other people's work.

Great review! As I've said before, this show actually CEMENTS the fact that these "NuTrek" shows aren't in the "Roddenberry/Berman" universe. You can't have "cadet" Uhura in SNW as being shown as a "genius linguist" who can speak "37 languages", but then, "35 years later", she STILL doesn't even know how to speak even BASIC "klingonese" in "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country", and has to bluff her way through a conversation by using "Klingon Language manuals". That would be like Spock going from a being "scientific genius" to someone who doesn't understand what H2O is. Uhura in JJ Abrams "Star Trek" knew how to speak "klingonese", but she also was from an alternate timeline, like "NuTrek". TOS Uhura appeared to be more of an communications/operations officer/engineer than she was "linguist", which is further proof that "NuTrek" is NOT in the "Roddenberry/Berman" universe, except as possibly one of those "quantum realities" as seen in TNG's 7th season episode "Parallels".

You know what I will say though? Diet Trek is a massive improvement over absolute shit that is Discovery. Honestly I think this cast has enough charm, and the writers are at least doing marginally better than they were with Discovery and Picard. If they can continue in an upward trend, maybe by Season 2 of SNW will get some good Star Trek again. That is IF the producers are actually actively trying to improve their QA, and not just happening to get lucky in a few places. Time will tell, will it not, Mr. Chato? Engage.

@@ronstewtsaw No there isn't. Not as long as KurtzGoldsman have any say in it. Simply because their track record so far is just unrelentigly abysmal and SNW already shows the same signature signs of carelessness and woke political activism disguised as entertainment as STD and Pukehard. It's just another turd but polished to a higher shine.

All this Uhura stuff made me think of Michael Winslow doing his motor mouth routine at the radar panel in Spaceballs. There's no reason for it, he's just doing it because he did it in Police Academy. Is this what the showrunners are going for, encouraging me to watch Spaceballs again? Because I have no problem with that. 🤣

Sure TOS had rubber Gorn suits and such but the stories carried it. These shows have CGI like we could only imagine in 1966 but now the writing is the rubber dinosaur head, and it takes you right out.

Screen sins could be forgiven if this is the episode where they didn't use tricorders to scan the egg anomaly and a crew member got hurt, so FROM NOW ON all away parties MUST scan for dangers with tricorders before proceeding. Is that what happened? Nah, I'm sure they haven't through of that yet. Good review!!!

I don't think Star Trek is dead - I'm 34 and too many people my age grew up on TNG, DS9 and Enterprise (sorry) for that era to be forgotten. When this weird Discovery/JJverse wave ends, I think you'll see the torch passed back to people in the industry that actually like 'real' Trek. It won't go away.

Why sorry for Enterprise? It is an excellent series. The last of "real" Star Trek IMO. In the UK we have yet to get SNW.

I agree, Brad Shepard. Rotten things (like New Trek) die and decompose; healthy things (like Old Trek) live and grow and reproduce. Some things will live forever: Ulysses, Hamlet, Sherlock Holmes, classic James Kirk, classic Mr Spock, classic Jean-Luc Picard, etc. 🖖

In my review, I talked about how the first episode was relatively strong for "NuTrek," but that the second episode (which is basically a straight up lifting of the "The Paradise Syndrome," without the romance), was an enormous step back for these characters. The cutsie, jokey, adolescent dialog and behavior we saw from military officers (yes, dammit, they're military!) right in the middle of a life and death negotiation with a superior foe threatening to blow them out of the sky was something right out of an episode of "Legends of Tomorrow" or "The Flash," very CW Arrowverse kind of stuff. It was certainly not becoming of one of the most decorated starship captains in Starfleet--on Star Trek. I can't imagine Jeffrey Hunter's Pike behaving that way. He would address the alien with a diplomatic, but stern demeanor. However, I did like the conclusion: Basically, don't be so quick to dismiss someone's religious faith. They may know something you don't. That was surprisingly un-woke of them. I was pleasantly surprised at that.

It's difficult when the writers and showrunners don't have training (or willingly eschew what training they have) in science or logic, especially for a science fiction program. So when that shows up in the final product, it does seem to be quite a mess.

I'm sincerely trying to wrap my mind over this one here. They set the show in the past, which already has established lore, aka Canon, and yet, Star Trek fans are expected to ignore it and hope to get a good science fiction story that we're supposed to accept as Star Trek? I personally refuse.

Spock. Probably the most recognizable, iconic character in television history. Beloved by all ages, genders, and cultures. You would think it would be a fairly simple matter to review past episodes of the original Star Trek series to see what made him so universally loved, and simply recreate some appropriate dialog. Instead, the writers had him say: "Ha, ha,... sometimes things go so badly you just have to laugh." With this, the writers have set a new standard for idiocy. But I do have to agree with the sentiment, SNW is so bad I just have to laugh.
@lancebaylis31692 жыл бұрын
Well said. I don't think Gregory Peck's grandson is necessarily a bad actor, like Zachary Quinto before him, but neither actor has been given Spock to play in any recognizable sense. The scripts are the problem.

I feel sorry for Anson Mount. He is a really good actor and he is forced to play Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. On top of that, he had played Black Bolt in the series Inhumans, and even had a cameo appearance in Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness as Black Bolt only for his character to be easily and quickly killed off by the Scarlet Witch and made to look stupid and weak. He is a good actor and he was in the Western series Hell On Wheels where he played a vigilante cowboy in the Wild West looking to avenge himself and his wife by killing a rich businessman and powerful crime lord who owns a successful railroad train business. That series was great and it showed Anson Mount to be able to play a very good vengeance-driven character and still carry a show for more than one season. He doesn't get that chance in either Star Trek or in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I hope that he gets an opportunity to be in more movies and T.V. series because his talent as a gifted character actor is quite underrated, and that's a crying shame.

If this were a TNG episode, data would have analyzed the egg and said something like, "This object responds to harmonic sonic frequencies in a regular, periodic cycle." And Picard would say, "Oh, you mean like a song?"

Exactly. But in proper writing the protagonist (Uhura) would have caused the egg to hurt Sam and so she has to resolve the problem she caused.

Great review, although I liked this ep a bit more. ST is like an abusive relation for me; if they only hurt me a little I accept it. ALSO, to be nitpicky - Number One ('Una') has a line that Spock's shuttle is vaporizing some of the ice, and the sudden expansion of steam is nudging the comet. Which the comet knew would happen. Nu Trek is all about the feelings, the science is minimal at best.

So basically they stole the plot of "For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky" but without the gravitas and humanity of Bones facing his own mortality. God _damn_ I hate new Star Trek. Though I agree it's diet Trek TOS it still has good energy and makes me feel good as I'm watching it.. Hopefully it'll be a bit more canonical as we go around the horn. Still, the best Star Trek we've had in 25 years. Not sure if that's saying a ton, but it somehow makes me happy the last couple weeks. Don't forget, there were some definite turkeys in the past, and though this episode had its weak spots, you can't say "Spock's Brain" was any better. Be seeing you King Denison.
