I visited Anchorage once and cried when I left. The sky was the most pure color of blue my eyes had ever seen. Moose are a surprise! I thought they were the size of horses. Nope!!! They are gigantic! 6 years ago I was working for the natural gas company in Anchorage, and I conducted a leak survey on the entire neighborhood of Mountain View. I visited every. single yard. I saw some wild things. The gray apartments that she said were new were such a great addition, because holy shit the buildings that were there before were terrifying. Definitely an improvement to their neighborhood.

Mountain View is the type of neighborhood I remember as a child growing up in Southeast Michigan. The neighborhood was mixed and everyone helped each other, looked out for each other and were happy. You just don't find that anymore which is sad. Jack said it perfectly and he is 100% correct!

This is a very clean cut version of Mountain View. I went to Bartlett Highschool and I knew girls who had been raped there, people who had bullet holes in their houses, and an old friend was murdered there. I even met people running from the law in the lower48 who stayed there only to be later extradited (it’s a big thing in Alaska). I’m sure it seems alright as a tourist but I’d be cautious of anyone watching this who thinks it’s homely and not that bad. I’m glad they are cleaning it up but nearly everyone I knew that stayed behind eventually left or is trying to leave. When the winter sets in, the sun is barely up, people get anxious and into trouble fueled by drugs and alcohol. Couldn’t pay me enough to live there, not even the yearly dividend.

No bro, there's alot of shit going on here this video doesn't touch on. My grandfather lived here, and people many times broke into his basement apartment, he is in his 80s and a Vietnam veteran. My uncle, his son who was taking care of him tragically died one day right in front of him. People kept stealing his van, and even stealing parts from it and his brand new battery. The neighbor was trying to get him to make him the payee on his social security money. We got him out of there because of the terrible conditions. There was someone cooking meth in the building and the FBI raided and seized the whole 4 plex apartment and everyone had to move out or be arrested. Another good example some pos lunatic broke into an elderly couples apartment, grandparents to someone, and raped and murdered both of them HE DID NOT EVEN KNOW THEM COMPLETELY RANDOM. There's good people here, but there is plenty of terrible people just looking for any come up they can as well. There is plenty of shootings and drugs prostitution and thievery going on there. There's alot of rapes that occur there. I have many stories about this neighborhood that are bad. One guy killed his wife and buried her in the woods next to the neighborhood and a dog found the burial site a few months later. When I was 18 someone from this neighborhood killed 2 18 and 19 year old kids in a truck with an AR 15 rifle over very petty reasons, now he's doing life for a double homicide. His getaway driver for that crime was a gay dude who liked to rape small men in prison, he was eventually stabbed to death and thrown off the top tier in the max prison in the state of Alaska. He got what was coming to him he was a predator.

This video does not tell the true story of Mountain View. It's dangerous to live there. Some of the blocks are worse than others. There is always a criminal investigation. You can't drive down there without seeing the police stopped at someone's place. This video is not a complete look into Mtn View.

I grew up in Anchorage. Spent 23 years there. Was definitely a culture shock for me when I started meeting people outside the state and how unfriendly and fake everyone is. Alaskans are a different breed. Racism is almost not existent, everyone treats each other with love and respect and will help other when they need it. I was 9 when my dad moved us to Alaska and I left in 1977. My mom got divorced and became a bartender in Anchorage. I still run into people (I live in WA state) who remember her. She worked at the Sourdough bar and her name was Shirley in case you were ever in there. Anchorage was very different for sure and I missed the people when I left. My brother lived there until 2004 and was a mailman, J.J. He was my last tie to Alaska.

I was born and raised in Anchorage and spent time around the MV area. I lived in Muldoon. Always seemed to me if you mind our own you will be just fine most of the time. There’s always the chance for random crime but I never had any issues. Used to ride my bike all over anchorage in my elementary school days. I just want to say thank you for making these videos. I think we all sometimes get caught up in our worlds that we rarely stop to think that other people could be living so different from us. I don't have the opportunity to travel as much as I'd like to and when I do, I am always curious to learn about the community's perspective of living where they do. This reminds me of the lower enlisted neighborhoods on the army bases I grew up in in the 80s and 90s. Very, very diverse, no racial issues. First of all, commanders of units took very badly to hearing that there were any racial issues involving one of his soldiers or the family of his soldier. That just didn’t fly in the army so much. It happened here and there, but this neighborhood really reminds me of what we experienced, we were all poor, crime wasn’t a big problem but there was crime. And really was very mixed and race wasn’t an issue which is really atypical it seems because the establishment has done everything in its power to keep mainstream American society racially divided. Here we see that it could be done rather seamlessly as long as the politicians stop grifting so much.

My hometown we were all siblings. Grew up in households and parents trusted each other their child would be ok. There weren’t any race issues. To this day we greet each other as sister and brother. Where we are now… it’s just political. 😢

Agreed except fast forward a decade, I was growing up early 2000s as a dependent on military bases. Army side was definitely super diverse. Air Force side was too but in a....different way? very thankful for my upbringing.... all of my friends in the cul de sac were from so many different cultures, ethnicities and background. This is exactly what I thought of watching this. I lived on base in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, California, Florida, New Mexico, Germany, Korea... Everywhere was safe but we had our shenanigans. My dad was a recruiter so we had crazy parties at our house but nobody was fighting or driving drunk or making bad decisions. I don't even remember any couples fighting loud on base. I remember the worst thing that happened was us kids went around banging pots and pans on new years and started ding dong ditching then the cops took us to the station until our parents all showed up. Those were some good times. Movies, swimming, birthday parties, skateboarding but when that intercom came on every adult and child stood at attention for that flag. How times have changed.

I was there for a month in August 2018. I had just come back to the United States from Australia after 8 years(I'm originally from California) but I stayed with my family for a month in Mountain View. I loved it there, people were telling me how dangerous it was. I went all over Mountain View, even ate some delicious Polynesian food from the Mekong Market(really good food) I felt very welcomed by people there, and felt safe. Im back home in SoCal, I have seen some pretty bad places in LA. Mountain View is a true community, and I miss it.

Mountain View was the "USA Neighborhood of the Year" in 1989 for the steps they'd taken towards cleaning things up, but it's been a tough battle for them. I remember as a college intern for the city, I was sent to evaluate the pavement there and we had people throwing rocks at our van because it had government plates on it. I love seeing the people who are lifting rather than leaving their community. It's awesome to see them highlighted because it doesn't get reported nearly as often.

I didn't feel the rigid racial divide that is felt in so many places in the Lower 48. My girls had friends of all races, so did I. We all hung together. Alaska is a different vibe. I think being so far removed from the rest of America, trying to survive in a harsh, unforgiving environment where a mistake in winter could cost you your life makes people more considerate of each other. Don't get me wrong, racism exists in Alaska, but I think people are willing to be more considerate of each other without all the petty racial BS because anything can happen. When your car is stuck after a 10-inch snowfall, you don't care who comes to help you get out. You have to cooperate, because racism is stupid!

Before, I would just think of Alaska as a cold, almost desolate place with nothing but grizzly bears. The only thing that would get on my nerves is having kids screaming like that all day right by your apartment. Take the kids to a park so they don’t disturb their neighbors. Not everyone works a morning job. Lots of night shift workers or disabled might be sleeping during the day. @@vickimeyers2672 Here's an experience when I attended Anchorage Community College as a freshman--this was when full-time tuition was $300/semester and I boarded in East Anchorage near Goose Lake for $100/month and rode the PeopleMover home up north on Friday night and back to class on Monday morning. This was at a time when smoking was not illegal and everyone especially on college campuses were exposed to cigarette smoke --even if not a smoker, but in this story I was relaying attendance at a college student association meeting and mentioning that Portia suggested this or that, and the person that I was conversing with who'd grown up on the East Coast, asked slyly (it seems in retrospect), if Portia was black, and I replied, "Well, I don't know. I suppose her skin was a very dark shade of brown, but maybe it was black or tan."

Growing up in Mtn. View was like the best thing ever for me. Loved walking with almost everyone at school from Elementary and Middle School years I had there. I had friends who didn’t live there, who were scared to even come and pick me up from my house lol but overall the community really help each other out. My family had a lot challenges and struggles living in mtn view and my grandma loved going to Mother Lawrence’s House (an amazing lady who gives and donates food etc to everyone who came to her house) every week, we had neighbors who always helped out and on birthdays or holidays we’d share it with our whole neighborhood. Mtn view always has a spot in my heart and I always love going on drives and going back to memories living there 💓

What I love about these videos is it shows the disparity between what the "media" shows us vs. what is really happening. These people are happy and chill and diversity is a good thing. They see the value in it. If mainstream media came to this neighborhood they would cut out some soundbites that makes it seem like one person hatted another and then (based on that story) things would actually turn that way.

I live in Anchorage also & lived on the W edge of the Fairview neighborhood for 20 something years. To be honest I also had kind of a negative view of Mt View but I loved this video. I'd read & heard things to the effect that Mt View was becoming a much more cohesive neighborhood with more development which is great. Cook Inlet Housing has done terrific things for many neighborhoods in Anchorage. A year ago before I made a move I needed to give away a lot of my books & a friend took me around town so we could put them in several Little Free Libraries & we drove to Mt View to put some in the Little Library near the Boys & Girls club. I hadn't been in the neighborhood for many years & was surprised at how much nicer it seemed than I remembered from the 90's. I've lived in the 99501 zip code of Anchorage since about 1995, (W Fairview & downtown areas.) and recently moved to another neighborhood but this video of Mt View is really great in increasing my respect for what's been accomplished in this area! Jasmine is an amazing person.

When I moved to Anchorage from Baltimore in the mid-2000's, people tried to scare me away from Mountain View. By the time I left, Mountain View was my favorite place in the city. It's a true melting pot of cultures that's unique for Anchorage, and it's just such a welcoming part of town, despite the crime.

There are cities and towns in Alaska!! For the most part, the wildlife stay in the wild. Sure, there can be an occasional moose or besr that will wander into town,, but the besr isn't looking for a person to kill and eat nor is the moose looking for a person to stomp to death. I visited Anchorage this August for a week. Literally one of the kindest places I’ve been. I was surprised by the amount of diversity. And people are much more united than other places I’ve lived or visited. Not saying there aren’t issues like poverty and homelessness which isn’t helped by the government and cost of food. Anyway, the Anchorage Museum had a great rotation called “Black in Alaska” and another photography installation detailing locals in AK.

I live in Anchorage and Mountain View is dangerous--the elementary school used to have a really bad principal. I was standing outside the church near the boys and girls club and a shoot out began and one dead two injured. One of the shooters hid in the club. There are a lot of shootings there. A child was killed when a stay bullet went through the wall.

I remember when i first moved to Alaska many years ago everyone said Moutain view was the HOOD. I was like this is not the hood. Hands down the best place i ever lived

Another great story Peter! We heard about the "Hood" when we visited our friends in Alaska. Funny how everyone has a completely different opinion of what actually goes on there. Jasmine is awesome and thanks for sharing her story. Can't wait to see what's next.

We did an RV trip to Alaska in 2018 and can't wait to go back and spend more time. It's SO unique! The people are the friendliest!

Another unique thing about Mt. View, is the Lions Park. It is a community park that is maintained by the Mt, View Lions Club. Members build the structures, basebal fields , rugby fields and provide the equipment to include maintance. All funded from the club, not the city. The people who belong to the Lions club are selfless and caring individuals. Dave whom you met, is amazing, he volunteers by coaching many sports events. He is inspirational to the children and community,

I had the pleasure of living in anchorage back in the late 80’s. My family was stationed at Elmendorf AFB. I didn’t get the full experience because I was still in high school but just seeing the images of downtown, 5th avenue Mall and hearing familiar locations like Muldoon brings back memories. Waiting for the bus in the frigid cold and watched the Northern Lights, looked like angels floating across the sky. I remember riding the People Mover public transportation. I remember wings and things restaurant. To this day I need blackout curtains in my bedroom because late sunsets in Alaska. I vaguely remember Mountain View but I don’t recall it being a “bad neighborhood” in 1988. I could definitely be wrong. I have friends that were there because of the Elmendorf and Fort Rich but after they graduated from high school they made anchorage home. It was a beautiful state. We definitely still reminisce about those dividend checks…

Black Owned Business get special gov't loans and are immune from competition. So NO, it is a negative statement. Wherever they are, they create problems.
