You need those [blank pages] to deal with the younger generations, because they will break you, as they are tougher than us. I live in Alaska and first went to Kauai about 15 yrs ago. The minute I got off that plane I felt like I had been thete before? A very deep connection to the land & people. I don't know if it's because we come from a island in Alaska or what the deep connection is. I absolutely love that place & my heart yearns to be there, but my family is here. Kauai is my favorite island and I’ve been to every one except Ni’ihau of course. Living on Oahu we were sent to Kauai to help rebuild after hurricane Iniki. One of the guys I worked with was from Kauai and he showed us all these places only locals would know about. Like Kipu falls. You’d never expect a water fall and pond back in the cane fields but was good fun diving off the cliff there. We all brought our surfboards and fishing gear from Oahu and stayed on Kauai about 6 months. Since then, I’ve been back many times. Been on the mainland a couple years now but it was great to see Kauai again on Peter’s video. 🤙🏼

That goes out to Kipukai. There is an entire valley out there that is private property and has zero access except the one road. It is protected by extreme cliffs so there is no way to walk in. It is a former cattle ranch, now just a vacation property for a family. They occasionally rent it out to the very wealthy to cover the money needed to keep it in operation. The ranch that the video was shot on runs ATV rides out to the edge of Kipukai. When the present generation of the family passes, the property will become a state park. Between that and when Kalaupapa on Molokai opens, both will make incredible parks.

The Hawaiian language is my father's first language. My mother's family is Portuguese from Koloa. Married to Hawaiian. The schools are doing a lot better about teaching and perpetuating the Hawaiian culture and language. I live in Texas and my neighbor is a black man that is 78. My father is 78 and their fathers worked together on Blackie Graves farms in Liberty County Texas. We help each other out in Dayton. I feed the horses twice daily at the local vet and they pay me a little but will not let me pay for taking my animals to see them. I have many rescues over the years and recently took my neighbors rescue kitten in for him. He was so happy and like every week when i push mow his front yard, he made me a huge plate of food. No matter what I say, he's bringing a plate of food over for a trade. We have chickens and when i give him a dozen. He will use 4 to make a breakfast of them with sausage and green bell peppers. Don't even mention wrestling on TV or you will be trapped.

Over 100 years ago before Hawaii became a state my grandmother went by ship to the main island to teach school to the island children. She was 19. She was met at the dock by one of the few taxis and taken to the teachers house. She met her 1st husband in Hawaii.

I never comment on YT videos but man...this made me think of my grandfather. Not only the thick pidgin but just his general demeanor and energy. This guy is a true Podagee. The Duarte family, Portuguese immigrants same as Uncle Vernon. My avo was born and raised in Kalaheo and Hanapepe, Kauai before he left for the military. I grew up on Oahu but was blessed to be able to visit him and my great parents there and see where he grew up. Kauai is hands down the most beautiful island in my opinion. Unfortunately many who have roots in HI have been priced out of paradise and now live in the mainland. Hawaii's politics and corporate greed made it so hard for many to live. Thank you Peter for letting us ride along with you and Uncle Vernon 🤙🏼

Love all your videos but this one hit a little more home. When my family first visited the islands and my kids were young I started right away in keeping us out of the “tourist” areas and things to learn about the local ways of life. We’ve been fortunate enough to meet some awesome people and learned many things. We still try to give back and do more for the locals that we can. The people and history is amazing and I always look at it as an honor to be able to experience the places and people.

As a Hawaiian living here on Kauai I appreciate your presentation of my home island. Vernon took you to the good side of the island (West). If you had gone north you would have been exposed to what money can buy. Lots of rich people and celebrities make their homes there and the kanakas are truly priced out of paradise. The beauty of Kauai is robbed when you find that a loaf of bread can be as much as $13 to $15.. Milk is $8 and up per gallon. Blessings to you and your family as you continue to do a good work. The North shore is such a contrast. Princeville is just so revolting. Nothing but a mass of insanely price condominiums and houses that so few could ever hope to afford. Then you go across the highway and the viewpoint provides such a breathtaking view over the Hanalei valley.

Thank you Peter for another great story to share. With every video I feel myself growing as a better human being, more open minded and less judgemental because you are able to share the truth in others as human beings allowing us all to see the diversity that we can celebrate rather than the biases and prejudices that we may carry knowingly or subconsciously. If only everyone took even a fraction of the time you spend to understand each other, we would be able to shed hatred and instead come together as a people. After each of your videos I find myself doing a lot of self reflection. Your methodology and way of creating your videos is truly special.

This is different, but the same type of very important journalism that Anthony Bourdain created through his shows. Peter does such an admirable job of keeping himself out of the way to let the people and the place tell the stories while asking ALL of the right questions to pull all of the most valuable information out of the subjects. I’m thoroughly impressed and thankful. Americans need to watch more of this.
