Hello Everyone! This is the start of a roughly 7-part series about the Amish. This was one of the most fascinating shoots I've done to date. And it makes me love the USA so much more. The fact that so many different people, with different backgrounds, and vastly different views on life can live within the same borders. Truth be told it wasn't the easiest footage to get but I'm happy with how this series came out and I hope you will be too. I learned a lot and many of these lessons will come through in this series. For those that don't know, I post every Sunday so this channel will be Amish-focused for the near future. And I'm setting up a bit of a team and just working out the kinks so CC will be uploaded in a day or so. Thanks for coming along! Regarding the Amish who completely cut themselves off from "English", how do they as Christians fulfill "The Great Commission", which is found in *chapter 28 of Matthew's Gospel,* _"And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”_ - Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus taught that we must go out into the world and spread the gospel (there are plenty of other passages as well which declare this command). How can they obey Christ, yet remain cut off from outsiders?

After my son was born I couldn't quit drinking due to severe post partum depression and psychosis. My son stayed with a Mennonite family for the first few months of his life and they treated me as family. They didn't judge me and they only wanted me to get better and back to taking care of my children. I'm 5 years off the sauce and I'm forever grateful to the Mennonites of Colorado for their help.

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people by surprise, unexpectantly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the WW1, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes. Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way. It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......

Love the Amish. In 1972 my community got devastated by flooding (north east PA) and thousands of Amish came up from Lancaster area to help people clean up and rebuild. Will never forget that

Another excellent video! I live in an area with a large Amish community. My uncle was recently in an accident while helping some Amish folks. They came to his funeral and made a casket for him. They are a great bunch of people. Misunderstood by many, that’s unfortunate.

I'm a Holmes County Mennonite and I thought Josh did a really good job explaining himself and his people. It was good to see a lot of familiar places near my home here on KZbin. One reminder though. There is a continuum from Swartzentruber Amish all the way to very liberal Mennonites. Josh almost straddles the fence between the two, landing on the Mennonite side, so he is on the fringe (not in a bad way) of being Mennonite. A whole lot of Mennonite people look more like Peter than Josh, A whole lot, if not the majority vote. A good many women do not wear coverings. And most Mennonites consider themselves English. Other than that, he did a excellent job. Most people here get along whether they are Amish, or English. 😊

The amish moved in our small town a few years back. The "swartzentruber" type. I work at a outdoors store so got to know a lot of them. Very nice hard working people. They Sell fresh grown produce and have a little saw mill where they build sheds to sell at real low prices with great quality. They always wave and smile when they pass you by. Great presence to have in the community. They give a boost to everyones overall health and morale. Love to see them grow

Linguist and German here with a fun fact. Pennsylvania Dutch is a whole set of high German dialects (meaning they're from the German highlands & Switzerland). These are anglicized versions of different Frankish, Palatinate, and Alemannic dialects (the one in the vid is Alemannic). What he calls "High German" is a transliteration of "Hochdeutsch", but the English designation for it is "Standard German". Germans who know a bit about German dialects can still tell pretty well where an Amish community emigrated from based on what their Dutch sounds like 200 years later.

@michab3697 Fellow German here and your fun fact actually taught me something...I didn't know there was a difference between "Standard German" and "High German" (Standard Deutsch / Hochdeutsch) as from my experience everyone refers to standard germans as high german and I had no idea that there is a definition of high german for being the dialect(s) spoken in the higher (elevation wise) regions down in the south. Very weird that in the lower part of Germany (NI, HH, SH..) we say that we speak high german but in fact speak standard german. Thanks for providing that extra bit of info which led to my enlightening wikipedia search. =)

One of the most interesting aspects of Peter's videos is the fact that he accompanies people while they do their daily work. It provides such an organic and natural picture of their life. I own an optometry practice in a fairly large Amish community. They knew my dad, who was their optometrist for whole families. He did the hard work of getting the Amish community's loyalty because he was a great doctor. I love the Amish community because they pay either cash or checks, so I don't have to pay merchant fees. Love them. But the community doesn't change a lot. They're still coming to the practice even after my dad died.

Living in the country, especially Amish roads no one is driving crazy fast, there are no foreign cars, and there are people who ride with horses. If a person is riding a horse with a buggy, they can go but so fast. The respect for their community will keep them safe. Plus, it isn’t a city, so there is gaps of cars & buggies when driving. What will he even drive into. That’s how safe they are, I bet you they rarely ever have accidents because of this. He can do that, us in the English world/cities can’t. My grandfather lives far out in the country in South Carolina, with just farm land around him. You could drive with your eyes closed for probably 5 minutes and you won’t see another person or hit anything-quiet an exaggeration but true. It was noticeable, but normal for me.

It’s better because the stress in a simple life like this isn’t as complex. In the metropolis, industrial world, our stresses and anxiety can net from so many different things so it’s harder to contend with. That’s why many people who get a taste of traditional life envy Mennonite and Amish communities.

This is my second time to watch this vid. I must say that Josh is a very decent and very nice person. He seems to be more than willing to take the time and patience to explain the difference of different parts of his culture. I constantly am reminded - no matter how different someone else and their culture may be - we are all really alike and not so differnt. So many different cultures have what we Americans have faded away from - the family structure and commitment to be just that - a family. That's a nice little town....think it's mostly snowbirds from all the surrounding Amish towns around here.... I see the Amish Buggies go by most every day....on their way to Walmart.....and we visit the General Store & Bakery in our area from time to time want a good donut....this Bakery is the one to go to.....been there many times, can't think of name of the Bakery but across the Street just down the road a bit is JR'S STORE ,and his Brother is the one who own the Bakery.... JR. sells a little of everything.... all kind of spices & Flours, etc, They sell sandwiches in the back of the store, will make you what ever you want, you just choose your meat & cheese, bread, etc. and they make a humongous Sandwich..... and they sell veggies, and they sell home made wood items, Furniture, outdoor swings & things for the Patio & swings, etc.....lots of things....check it out if you've never been there....if you have, send me the name of that video.....thanks ...KyLady 10/30/24

I don't think it's a simple life at all. They work very hard and some don't even have electricity. It may sound nice but can you imagine having to use an outhouse during a snowstorm in January when it's -10 degrees.

@kartofle123: There are other options than the outhouse, such as chamber pots, if the weather is truly that bad. But it’s nothing our ancestors didn’t survive through, so it wouldn’t kill us either. Some people have indoor composting toilets, and a lot of the out houses I have used are actually pretty nice and have just a little breezeway, with a roof still attaching them to the back of the house.

Another great video. My wife and I stayed in the Amish country of Shipshewana Indiana for a couple days on vacation a few years back. Took a tour with an Amish man and had dinner at his home with his family and other tourists. I loved the experience. We felt so safe, free, and unstressed while we were in the area. They have a home apathetic doctor, but, anyone can go see this doctor whose educated in it and, they use herbs and, such! I have lived in some rural areas in Indiana, in Cross Plains, Indiana the Amish and Mennonites were my neighbors at one point. They also would also serve food at different community functions and, sell their different products! Like even home spun brooms! But, basically a the home apathetic doctor also does Home Births, if they need to go to the hospital where it’s safer on them and, the baby, their doctor will recommend that as needed!

We actually have a pretty good amount of Amish and Mennonite people living here in this part of Ontario, Canada. We always buy honey and maple syrup from them and it's sooo good. This one time we were on the road and an older gentleman was selling honey on the side of the road and we stopped to grab some. Shook his hand and his hand felt really leathery/sandpaperish meaning that he worked a lot with his hands. I'll never forget what he said to us. I once helped a carload of Mennonites who were stranded on the side of the highway 20 years ago. I'd never come in contact with any before. Some of the coolest people I'd ever met. I still think of them from time to time and hope they are all doing well and not being mistreated.

The beachy Amish are mostly an evangelical branch, that has more in common with mainline Mennonite churches than with the Amish. Josh is still a good host and explained a lot given his background in the area and culture. I'm sure you had few options interviewing and filming the Amish, but I do wish you would continue this series. You will be surprised at the differences within the Amish communities, including traditions and languages. I hope you won't be afraid to explore this more indepth and really get to see the Amish and the variations of the culture. Plus, with settlements in over 25 states and hundreds of rural counties, the Amish and Mennonites really are a significant part of the rural American landscape east of the Mississippi and no documentary about rural America in 2022 would be complete without also mentioning the huge contributions to rural America that these communities have had. Did you know that the Amish make up over a quater of all U.S. dairy farms?

Interesting video! My ancestors were Swiss Mennonites from Ohio and Pennsylvania who immigrated from Switzerland during the early 19th century. My grandmother was the last in my family to speak German. Incidentally, the Pennsylvania Dutch were speakers of German and not the Dutch language. The term "Dutch" was misapplied by Americans as meaning "Deutsch" which means German in the German language.

People from the part of the world that's now known as Germany were called Dutch when they immigrated to the US. The term Dutch was not limited to the Netherlands. It's a common misconception that "Dutch" got confused with "Deutsch."

For one to be wise, You must research and READ, and educate yourself, AND prove ALL TRUTH. The only one to lead you is The Most High. Pray for insight but don't trust when LIARS tell you NOT to read something but approve of what you “Should”! It is good that we pray for you, and I do hope you pray for me as well. However, the decision is ours as to whether or not we fully submit to his will. The Most High wants us to submit to his will through our own decisions. That is why the Messiah says if any man comes to me, let him deny HIMSELF. That is why the word also says to be transformed by the renewing of OUR minds. That’s why it says every man will have to give an account for what he hath done. It is personal accountability and the sooner we accept this, the closer we will become to actually making the decisions that will make us submit fully to his will And for those of you who deny the existence of The Most High or don’t take the ancient scriptures seriously, you need to seriously wake up. Biblical prophecy is literally unfolding right before our eyes. This is not a game. A few notable mentions (Women wearing makeup need to repent and change (Read the testament of reuben) no debate, people who smoke weed (sorcery) need to repent and change no debate, people who eat upon the flesh of animals aka consumption of death… need to repent and change (one of the huge flaws of the Holy Bible), no debate. Read the Essene Humane Gospel of “Jesus Christ” and the Essene Humane Gospel of Peace, and also the Teaching of the Essenes that go hand in hand with them. These are books that came from the Dead Sea Scrolls, written by ancient israelites however translated by men even around these times.) Read Daniel 12 to understand further why books held in the Vatican are slowly being released now in these end times. Everything is going according to prophecy, even they have to move accordingly. I am from central Pennsylvania and there are tons of Amish in my area. The BEST food and produce, ever. I don't get home as often as I would like these days but when I can, I always get the biggest smile on my face when I hear Pennsylvania Dutch and see the Amish farms.

Very few people who have grown up with modern conveniences could cope with the Amish lifestyle. My dad grew up not Amish but lived that lifestyle because of poverty. I wanted a wood stove so badly. He talked me out of it. One of the things he said was that he had chopped wood in his early life and it was enough chopping for a lifetime. The old outhouse still stood at the homestead because grandpa still liked the outhouse. My mom still baked all of our bread and rolls. I did not have any boughten clothes until high school. We had a huge garden. We raised all our own beef and pork. But when I was 8 years old I helped put up fence, digging post holes by hand. I was driving the tractor before I could reach the pedals. I was also cleaning the pig house in the heat of summer. When the stench was so strong your eyes and nose run like faucets.
