And do a vlog here lots of history behind it rumors have it as some stores on Main Street are actually built on top of a pre existing city , northland college is haunted , a motel across from Walgreens also haunted 3rd floor and at bar area people have seen and reported talking to a figure one minute then next gone . 3 rd floor room can’t remember room number quest report someone shaking door knob and pulling blankets off them as they sleep , lots of memorial artwork on buildings of real people who actually worked here and passed . It’s all on internet look up Ashland wi. Ghost stories and reports , I really think since you’re only about 5 hrs from here from Milwaukee you’d have a lot of great vlogs here in this town . After watching his videos on the US/Mexico border I knew he was a true humanitarian journalist at heart. He has a way of making connections and getting the raw, emotional truth out of people that is hardly found anywhere else. As someone who grew up in south Texas I know a lot about the immigration situation and I know a lot of the people directly impacted by it. Peter was able to portray the situation not only far more accurately than mainstream media, but on a much more personal level at that. The world need more folks like him.

As a Brit, I fully agree with benwanders. Never had chance to visit the States. My main interest used to be to only visit the diversity of the great outdoors (nature). But having been exposed to the interesting diversity of people by Peter, I'm also keen to meet and mix with the people too. My grandparents came to Milwaukee from Germany in 1924. My dad was born in Milwaukee in 1928. They lived on the northside, and grandpa was a baker in a northside German bakery. Although they left the city and settled in northern WI in the 1930's, dad ended up moving back and graduating from Marquette in the 1950s. You can take the boy out of Milwaukee, but you can't take Milwaukee out of the boy. Last year, at the age of 93, my father gave me a Milwaukee tour of everywhere he lived, worked and studied. I saw the first apt. my parents rented on Wisconsin Avenue near Marquette (across the street from an old Turner Hall which is now a concert venue). Dad passed away this summer at age 94. He always spoke so lovingly about Milwaukee. Thanks for taking me back to Milwaukee, Peter.

"Kia boys" are STILL a problem in Milwaukee. Two summers ago I literally watched a group of teen boys crash a kia soul into a student housing building right across the street from my building. About 12 teenage boys all scrambled out of the vehicle and took off running in all directions. And I live close to downtown in the Avenues West neighborhood. It's also known as the "University District" or the "Marquette District" because it's where most of the student housing for Marquette University students is located. I'm still in this neighborhood simply because it's centrally located and pretty easy to get to where I need to go. I'm a Chicago native but moved away about a decade ago for work. When a change happened in my life, I wanted to go back to Illinois but just couldn't afford to live there anymore. A friend offered me a place to stay until I "got back on my feet" here in Milwaukee and I've been here ever since. Granted, it's not Chicago by any stretch but it has enough city conveniences that it's habitable and the cost of living couldn't be beat at the time I moved here. Lately, rents have been skyrocketing. The building I'm currently in was sold about a year ago to an investment firm in Chicago. They've been "renovating" empty units and are now charging 110% more than my current rent. Eventually, they will force residents to have to choose to either move into one of the renovated units and pay the exorbitant increase in rent or move out. At that point, I've already decided, I'm going to buy an RV and become a digital nomad. I already work remotely, so taking my work on the road won't be all that difficult. I just hate the work/rent cycle and have nothing to show for it. Milwaukee saved my life, but like every place the cost of living is out of control. What I have found that I really do like about Milwaukee is its art scene. It's had a really thriving art community for a good 30 years now and it's very art friendly. Visual art, theatre, music, you name it. I have a friend who has a puppet troupe, I have other friends who run a theatre company, and others still who are local musicians. I think that's Milwaukee's saving grace. The vibe is pretty funky and I do enjoy discovering new areas of this city. Milwaukee isn't an instant "WOW" factor, its just there, but when you get into the city, get to know the people, it really is kinda cool.

I lived in Milwaukee for three years, and its an underrated city for sure. The downtown area is pretty nice, and aside from pockets of bad neighborhoods, the surrounding areas are nice too. It is basically a very small Chicago, complete with a lakefront.

@@Mytoekhandria steer clear of the northside inner city of Milwaukee for living purposes. But the suburbs in the northside are really nice. I would recommend trying to find a place in the suburbs for living. Look into Wauwatosa, Whitefish Bay, Bayside, Shorewood, Hales Corners if you want really nice, very suburban areas. Look into Bayview if you like the hipster trendy scene, but also a nice area with good restaurants and activities. And look into Greenfield, Cudahy, South Milwaukee if you want that southside middle class area. I guess it would depend on your income and what you're willing to pay fore rent/mortgage. he mentioned something about those apartments in the video being like 950-1500 a month. That's grossly underestimating the cost of those a month. rent for those downtown apts close to the lakefront and downtown scene would be well over $2500-3000 a month probably. The suburbs if buying a house can be unreal for prices and property taxes for even buying a ranch or cape cod type house. All of the suburbs I mentioned are all part of the county of Milwaukee, and what make up Milwaukee...everything is accessible in Milwaukee within 5-15 mins from the suburbs.

@@237gmany/most up until recently didn’t have immobilizers. These immobilizers make it so the cars can’t be easily stolen. Kia went cheap and that’s what happens. Most Kia’s now have them. They are also easy to get with a poor credit score, so many in poorer areas get them and thus they are more available to steal.

I moved from Chicago suburbs to Milwaukee in 2015. As a new college grad, I was extremely impressed with the affordability in comparison to what my friends in Chicago were paying. My first apartment was $730 a month including heat and water on the east side. On street parking was about $50 a year, no tolls to pay driving around, sales tax 5% vs 10% in Chicago. However, I now live in the burbs raising small children because the petty crime in Milwaukee as noted in this video is unbearable. I was side swiped by a reckless driver once and that was enough for me with kids. Milwaukee, you have a special place in my heart and I will always drive downtown for festivals and the unique arts scene, but safety is paramount. No city can survive with the likes of kia boys blowing through red lights causing mayhem. Please focus on reckless driving and underserved youth. It's perhaps a nationwide problem, but especially bad in Milwaukee. People deserve to feel safe as a basic human right of passage living in any city. It may start in the home, but raising quality citizens sometimes means actually holding firm on laws and punishing those who violate others to the fullest extent.

Milwaukee is a solid city. I moved to Wisconsin from Hawaii and I have nothing but good things to say about Milwaukee. We live about an hour north of Milwaukee and visit the city as much as possible. Great places and museums to take the kids. Cost of living is still good, lots of factory work that pays well even with a high school education and the people here are very friendly. I call them the midwestern Hawaiians lol. Of course you’ll have bad areas in any large city but compared to Chicago which is right down the street, this place is paradise. That being said, I think the state of Wisconsin is a solid place to set roots if you can handle this DAMN COLD WEATHER lol.

I can't believe Fred didn't take you to the Milwaukee Art Museum with Santiago Calatrava's Quadracci Pavilion that opens and closes like bird wings in flight and is even more beautiful inside. There are Frank Lloyd Wright homes on The Burnham Block, his Fredrick Bogk House steps from Bradford Beach that you visited, and Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church on the NW side. I went to college at UW-Milwaukee from 87-91. Moved to Chicago in 93 for a few years. Back then the slogan was "A great place on a great lake" and it really was. There is like a festival every weekend in the summer and you got Summerfest and the State Fair. The mix of cultures give s great food options and the Performing Arts Center was fantastic. I've live all around the Midwest and now I'm back Southwest of Milwaukee. It's a great city/surrounding community.

It’s soooo crazy being from a city in Wisconsin (not even 1/10th the size of MKE but top ten in the state pop.) seeing people think of Milwaukee as “small” in any way! I think of Milwaukee as a HUGE city and going there is always memorable, even just driving thru. As a kid going on field trips to Milwaukee Zoo or the Museums downtown I was always hyped up to be going to the ‘big city’ and looked forward to it for weeks. now getting to go to bucks games and visit friends in college it’s a bit different, dealing with traffic that has no patience, and paying $50 to park.

Heavy German DNA and a carried over love for the old country passed down in my family. My father’s side worked at the factories there, and both my Opas worked munitions through WWII. I will always love Milwaukee and its beautiful suburbs. Its nice to see so much hometown pride in the folks living there.

Milwaukee used to have four daily German-language newspapers. The phone book (back we had those) had page after page after page of Schmidts and Millers. The German Americans there had the only socialist mayor of any large North American city - for fifty years. So if you ever come to Milwaukee, it might be interesting!

Interesting choice of local "host" to work with. Dude has been hustling his merch for decades; a lot of the locals know him as the "too much rock for one hand" guy. He's friends with the people who own the restaurant they ate at, just "happened" to run into his artist friend, the soccer guy (wearing one of Fred's jerseys) knew who Santenello was before he walked up and tried to brush it off with "everyone here is named Peter", they wind up at a dance studio where people are wearing his merchandise and have people in the background who have modeled clothing on his websites, etc. He not only has an interest in the city but a significant financial incentive to monetize that interest. I was born and raised in the city over 50 years ago -- and still live -- here but am under no pretenses that it's as good as this video shows. In the future I'd prefer less biased representation.

i used to work in the hood on the northside doing apartment maintenance for low income housing. truly just a terrible neighborhood always on guard and head on a swivel seeing nothing hearing nothing and saying nothing just to make a living. Most people in those apartments couldn't care less about the place they live or the people who make it possible. During covid we had so many people over 14 months past due on rent and nothing we could do about it. I'd go to their apts and they're talking about vacations and all kinds of stuff. just sad. House packed to the roof with stolen goods sometimes and the people are so aggressive to get work done. a lady literally threatened to shoot me over her water heater repair one day. cool city architecturally though lol just would never live there ever again.

My father was born in Racine, WI and I’ve always wondered what his town and upbringing was like. He was born in 1931 and gone now but he had very fond memories of his city which is very close to Milwaukee. Thank you Peter!

Racine is a very cool town with beautiful houses and gool architecture. I always go from Chicago to get fresh Danish Kringle for Christmas. It’s outstanding. It has some F.L.Wright buildings , lake area is beautiful. And fishing for steelhead is awesome.

Racine was a great city on the decline in the ‘80s. I moved away in the ‘90s. It’s basically got the same problems as Milwaukee now, but with better Danish bakeries.

Although I'm not a big fan of our drug and alcohol issues I have to say I love this city because you really do get to see so many different walks of life and it is truly humbling and I value that very much about this city. Between the traffic on 76th that really should be a freeway, the crime which I've personally been victim of many times despite actually being a law abiding hardworking citzen and the entitled, narcissistic assholes living here, and in flux of people coming in from Chicago and across boarders it's chaotic for me. Unfortunately the good parts of this city don't out weigh the bad. I've had nothing but relationship and money problems here. But if people wanna come here I'm not gonna stop them because I am either moving or offing myself at this rate 😂

Peter, thank you so much for this. I grew up in Northwest Illinois in a small city that for all intents and purposes looks exactly like a mini Milwaukee, right on the Mississippi. It was a rough childhood and I have a lot of trauma - haven't been back to the Midwest for about 20 years now. I can't bring myself to watch the Chicago series and was hesitant on this one since I'm working through the PTSD and the setting is hard for me, but this reminded me of the good things about the area. Fred is a little over the top and I get the feeling he orchestrated a lot of the people you "ran into" but he seems genuinely friendly - even if he's trying to sell merch. I do think this was a bit of an NK tour but it was nice to see, thank you!

Always delighted to see someone talk impartially about Milwaukee! I moved here in 2014 (originally from Ohio), and I have fallen madly in love with this town. I worked in the service industry at places ranging from massive sports bars to a 100 year old family-owned German restaurant to bowling alleys before returning to school to finish a graduate degree, and I've gotten to experience so much this city has to offer (good and bad). It gets a really bad rap in the media, not for no reason sometimes, but there's so much more to this place than the crime. I'm job hunting now to start a career and I am desperately hoping I can find something in the area. I moved here originally without any ties so if I didn't like it I could just move on to the next adventure, but here I am over 9 years later and there's nowhere else I'd rather be. One added note, I'm not a soccer fan but there is a semi-pro NPSL soccer team in town. They play in Wauwatosa a couple miles west of downtown (just a few blocks west of where this video was shot), but there isn't a huge following unfortunately. Shoutout FC Milwaukee Torrent!

Lived on the eastside as a kid 76-82, just off Brady St and then Oakland and Hartford. Summerfest, Bradford beach, Brady St festival, Oriental Theatre, Bucs and Brewer games with my dad are some of my best memories. Hey Fred, I had the paper route delivering to the UWM dormatories!! as a German who has family near Milwaukee I have been there multiple times and each time my family has told me how dangerous it has gotten. It definitely has its beautiful parts but there are many places I would avoid. Much love for Wisconsin in general though

Recently I visited my niece in Milwaukee. I had a great time and was pleasantly surprised. I'm from Buffalo but Milwaukee felt light years ahead of us.

You are on the reverse of the route my boys and I traveled last December as we traversed from Springfield, Missouri, directly to downtown Milwaukee and then we went to Chicago with a couple of brief visits along the way. I have been to Milwaukee many times, and a trip worth taking from Milwaukee is to Lake Geneva-especially during pumpkin harvest season. I’ve said for years, the most friendly airport in the world is in Milwaukee, and as public spaces go, their basketball arena, Fiserv Forum, definitely rivals the airport in terms of friendly, helpful atmospheres. Love this city!

@@mm9492 Yes, you have to spend some time in Lake Geneva and neighboring Lake Delevan if you're anywhere near Milwaukee. If you have more time, check out Madison - or actually better yet, Door County, north of Milwaukee!

I’m a trucker and I hauled beer and other goods in and outa Milwaukee for 4 years. Definitely an interesting place. Every once in a while I got laid over for the night and I’d go to a local bar or eat some food somewhere. I personally never got the vibe that I was welcomed, as a white fella. Some places were cool, some places wouldn’t hardly look at me. Our terminal we hauled beer out of definitely wasn’t in the best neighborhood though. Overall, a beautiful place though. Miss going through there sometimes. Went there a lot as a kid too with my dad when he was trucking. Went to the zoo there once when I was about 10 and it’s something I’ll never forget. Their zoo is outa this world.

You haul out of miller. If you got the time go to Schobermas. It's on St Paul Ave. Just east of the 26 th st exit. They got good food the cleintell is a mix of professional types and locals. You can usually park you truck pretty close to the place. But it's not a great area. So keep your eyes peeled.
