I grew up near Milwaukee and now live in the northwest part of the state. As far as winter goes, I can say the farther away from Lake Michigan you go, the more sunlight you get- I feel like the lake grabs all the clouds and hangs onto them for days. It may be colder temperatures on the western side but we get more sunlight.

We've lived in Wisconsin over 31 years now. I'm originally from Southern California (don't judge!) and hubby is from South Dakota. After we got out of the military I suggested moving to northern California and we did ok for a couple of years, but things fell apart. He got a truck driving job, I ended up riding with him, we were in Wisconsin a lot on his dedicated route, so we set down roots here. Also a 10 hour drive from his parents' place. Wisconsin's an interesting place and I will say that I'd never even considered living here but for the circumstances that brought us here to the Fox Valley. Decent place, low crime, things to do; our neighborhood is well-kept. Four seasons (though I really don't like winter after a few weeks of the cold) and surprisingly pretty scenery in various areas. Cost of living is helluva lot lower than it was in California (southern OR northern). Visiting for scenery? The Driftless region is amazing. So is the Door County Peninsula, and the North Woods in fall blaze in color. The Lake Superior shoreline and Apostle Islands are a kayaker's paradise. But respect the lake! It eats the unwary.

The biggest thing is the weather. Even in the southern part of the state, winters can be pretty damn brutal. Not every year, but some years. Summers are nice, but can get hot, humid....and MOSQUITOES big enough to carry away small dogs. Other than that, there are plenty of really great things in the state to offset any negatives. Country roads, wild areas, parks. Generally pretty laid back. Few other places I would consider living.

I’ve lived in Wisconsin 53 years and I’ve never said “you betcha”. Nor have I heard anyone say it. Maybe that’s an up north thing. I live in Madison and always have. Also, a 20 point buck must be very elusive because the biggest I’ve heard of is a 14 point and most of the men in my family hunt. I realize that was exaggerated. I can give hundreds of examples that are significant to Wisconsin but I don’t have a channel. As of right now, 1/4/25, it’s 7 degrees Fahrenheit. I think that’s a little cooler than most people would want to live in. Last winter we had a few weeks that were 20 below or worse. Cars wouldn’t start, etc. So to say winters aren’t bad is relative. I don’t love it but know how to survive in it.
@joshbrosthomes19 күн бұрын
@@Finneganbeginagain1 yes definitely all exaggerated points a bit. I’ve heard people say “you betcha” in almost a sarcastic/joking kind of way. The winters have been quite mild compared to even 5 years ago. Last week it was almost 50, and there’s still no snow on the ground. There’s always going to be those cold snaps here, but I think of harsh winters as a combination or severe cold and snow, and we just have not seen that much in the most recent years, in southern WI anyway.

At least with the cold, you can put more layers on and bundle up under a blanket. I can't imagine living in a place like texas or florida where half the year is 100 degrees with 99 percent humidity. Their summers are like our winters, people sitting inside doing nothing because it's so unbearable outside. My biggest reason for living here is how safe it is, no hurricanes, no earthquakes, no volcanoes, very few fires and tornadoes, minor flooding, etc.

I spent the first thirty years of my life in Wisconsin, but currently live abroad in the southern part of South Korea. I've seen people from other countries complain they've never experienced winters this cold before. To explain, the winters in my city usually average around the upper 30s/40F in the day and upper 20s/30F at night. An extremely cold night would be in teens fahrenheit. This is considered too cold for them. What I'm getting at is states like Minnesota or the Dakotas might have worse winters. But if you tell someone that's used to warmer temperatures that winters in Wisconsin are "not that bad" you are setting them up for quite a shock.

When I was a kid we lived in the upstairs of a house. It didn't have central heating, we had a heater in the dining room that was it. My room was a ways from the dining room. My windows always had thick layers of ice on them in the winter. The window would blow through and move the curtain over my closet doorway which always scared me. The air would be so cold in the morning when I woke up I could see my breath. We sure didn't have any carpeting either. I had to put my bare feet on that icy linoleum floor and run as fast as I could to bathroom then stand on tip toes until I finished my business. LOL Still today when I hear a cold whistling wind mixed with blowing snow it lulls me right to sleep.

I lived in Door County Wisconsin for over 26 years so far. I was from Illinois. My parents had built a vacation home in Door County in the fall of 1979. With them that I spent a lot of my vacations with them and my sister. When my parents retired in 1993 from teaching and made their vacation home as their permanent home. I stayed with them from 1993-94. I was working in a grocery store near their home. 93-94 was a tough winter as I remembered. My sister was in Spain for a part of the year. She came back and stayed with us. My sister and I moved back in Illinois to lived in 3 different apartments for the 3 years. I moved back in mid May 1997. It was a beautiful Mother’s Day weekend. When I started to work at a different grocery store it got colder in the 30’s. I wasn’t expecting it to be that cold in mid May. It was cold for a week. It got to be back to normal temperatures. On December 1st that I moved in my apartment that same year. I did liked to lived with my parents during those months. They had 2 cats that I both liked. One cat was so old and frail that was an old buddy towards me. The other cat that I did played with. I don’t think that I have an accent nor people in Door County sounded the same as I do. Even my grandmother lived in the county,too. She was from central Illinois. She sounded liked she was from the south. Even my mother was from the same area and doesn’t have an accent liked my grandmother did. I do feel liked that I do belong in Door County because of being part Swedish and part Norwegian on my father’s side of the family. Even my last name is still Peterson.

@@lennybuttz2162 I live in Ft Lauderdale which is as diverse as it comes. For 20 years I worked for a company where 2/3 of the employees were born in another country. I think it made us stronger as it forced everyone to deal with the other's "uniquenesses". I always say it is harder to hate a group of people when you know them personally! My parents are from southeastern Ohio (on the West Virginia border). Everyday I am grateful they moved us to Florida; I can't imagine what my life would be if I grew up there! I can't fathom how you deal with the winters! I cry when it gets below 70! GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!!

When it comes to personal rights Wisconsin has always been at the forefront. People in Wisconsin have a very strong belief in letting people live the way they want to live. Even if they don't agree with it they still support your rights. It was never illegal hear to have a biracial marriage as it was in many states. WI was often the first or one of the first states to pass laws supporting personal rights. Wisconsin used to be a strong union state, it's the birthplace for employees providing insurance for employees. It's also the birthplace of kindergarten. Sadly in the past 20 years a lot of outsiders have immigrated to Wisconsin and forced themselves into positions of power and now they're doing their best to change Wisconsin from a state of the people to a state of the corporation. I do not have hope for the future.

• You've gotta love cold in the winter and hot and humid weather in the summer! • Limited restaurant selections even in Madison - quality isn't that great compared to other parts of the country! • If you own an exotic car, forget about it! • Very high property taxes compared to other states nationally

Madison is a good place... small city compared to those in California... I think it's in Danes County... mostly white people... white German people.... I love driving through Madison from Iowa, crossing through Duburque to Madison up to Fond Du Lac, Oshkosh then to Green Bay.. I love speaking German to people there... so funny... they're German blood but can't speak German... what a shame...

Lived in Wisconsin. Utterly boring and stale. Winters are windy and icy. Public transit is non-existent in most cities. Job market is limited, and state laws are heavily anti-fun and anti-women! Only those who are born in Wisconsin, mostly like it, but the state offers very little in terms of quality of life metrics. I am glad I left.
@joshbrosthomes17 күн бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I agree with you on the public transit. Wisconsin has a top 10 education system in the entire country, and generally ranks middle of the pack/upper third in a lot of other quality of life metrics, from what I often see. It's never number one, but it's almost always in the upper half of the country
