Hi Peter! I've been involved in aviation for nearly 50 years, and I am constantly inspired by your videos! I was wondering, have you considered launching an RC plane with GPS, goPro, and autopilot by weather balloon to 120,000 feet, then releasing it so that it records the event all the way back to the ground? Having GPS and autopilot will enable it to find its way back to you - much less likely to be lost! :) Thanks for all the great vids.

The counter rotasting fans permit a higher air pressure to drive the ir through server heat sinks. Great engineering. but as a consequence, you can duct the air to release at a higher velocity to correctly load up the fan motors. This will improve your power to weight ratio. They aren't designed to run without the counter rotation because the blades are quite high pitch and will result in spinning air more than pushing it if run individually. I had the same thought as you watching those runs running at hish speed on the air frame you made for slow regular PC fans 😄

By drilling holes in the side of the fan you have airflow going out acting as an airbrake, like reverse thrust works on comercial jets. The centrifugal force of the blades throwing air outward flows out of the holes. Those walls are designed to stop that and throw that flow back.

The _Gossamer Condor_ (the first successful human-powered aircraft) showed that wires aren't that important at very low speed - something to do with the Reynolds number. 7:10 it's not better because it's lighter even tho it's is still better. The main factor is because the holes in the sides are sucking air how fans are supped to suck air. So it's more of how the air gets in the fan and not the weight

Next time get some clear acrylic sheet and drill holes through it for your fan frame legs. Space your sheet to the sides of your scales and higher above the scales and poke your frame legs through. Then you'll be measuring the fan thrust while the scales deck is unaffected by the wind thrust. Love your DIY attitude!

Here in Brazil, fiber optic cables have a rod made of resin and fiberglass that is very light, I believe it is lighter than the bamboo or wooden rod that you use to make this glider. What if it was made with these fiberglass rods? Every time the technician does maintenance, there are a bunch of these sticks lying around, my colleague uses them to make a kite. The best thing is that this stick doesn't break at all.

Idea for measuring the thrust of each fan: Construct a Pendulum with a rigid stick and attach the fan to the bottom along with a set mass. Turn on the fan and measure the angle the pendulum moves from its natural resting position (θ) Then use F=mgSin(θ) to determine the the thrust of the fan, proportional to how much the pendulum moves.

Good fun!!! Have you considered that the fan position in the first plane as being in the front was making the nose /plane front heavy? That combined with an propeler angled slightly downawards would inevitably bring the nose down... may be if you try with the same ultralight structure but position the fan at close to balancing point and possibly try adjusting the angle of attack (refering to the fan angle , not the angle of the wings or blades of the fan) a few times, you might strike that sweet spot? As the light plane is incredibly good glider, all it should need is a small amount of trust at the right place and angle, and the fan should be sufficient. It's worth trying a bit more.
