He never sold it, but Jones passed away in 1976 and one of the sons sold the diamond at Sotheby’s auction house in New York in 1984. Although the official price was debated, it was reported to be about $75,000 ($200,000 in today’s economy). Pam Jackson, president of the Peterstown Preservation Group, said she thinks someone from South Korea bought the diamond but no one knows for sure or where it is now.

WOW! You made it to Petersburg, WV. Yes, it is a really neat town in WV. I haven't visited Petersburg in a "coon's age" (old WVirginian expression). That is an interesting story about the diamond. From what I have heard , Jones never sold the diamond. One of his sons sold it after his Dad passed away. I don't remember who bought it or what he/she paid for the diamond. I don't know what happened to Chad Johnson. When I was attending WVU, the students talked a great deal about Jerry West and the former football coach, Don Nelen. Take care and be safe.

Fascinating! What a twist on a story of found treasure! The fact that it sat in a wooden box in a shed for 14 years through the Great Depression... Wow, you could write half a dozen short stories about that alone. I don't know much about gem hunting, but it does seem likely that in coal country there would also be diamonds, no? Still and all, when the weather is frosty and you need warmth, that Pocahontas coal is going to be much more valuable than a wheel barrow full of diamonds! LOL!
