Since mylar is impermeable to moisture, the inside of your bag will be dripping wet in just a few hours. I know from experience when I had to sleep outside for a night without a sleeping bag. The condensation was a problem, as this water vapor will suck BTUs out of your body. Remember, water transmits heat hundreds of times more efficiently than air. This is why down sleeping bags are so inefficient when they trap moisture from your skin, and the water vapor freezes. The best insulation in the world is made by Wiggy's of Grand Junction, CO. It allows moisture to escape while trapping heat. Mylar is fine as an outer layer (water barrier) as long as it is NOT touching your clothing!
@allenallen50403 ай бұрын
I believe most of the moisture was from you breathing in the bag. If you had a hat and something to cover your face, you would not have had a problem. Am I right?
@jonahlevi3178Ай бұрын
Great comment but there's one thing you got wrong I'm pretty sure. The down doesn't trap water and keep water next to you ETC. The reason down isn't good in humid environments is because in humidity the down scrunches up instead of being lofty. If some down is the size of a great big puffy pillow and it gets wet it will all turn into the size of a tennis ball pretty much. Because there is no loft it will not trap any heat making you cold.
@FarooqF-g2xАй бұрын
hi, do you mean that if someone without a sleeping bag just take this emergency sleeping bag and then they sweat assuming that it is not that cold and the body sweats naturally then that sweat will of course become a trouble because it cannot escape? Is that what you wanted to say?

You should definitely keep wool blankets and cold weather sleeping bags in your trunk as well. I don't know yet how well these work. I purchased a couple for me and my husband from Titan before Christmas. 55 people in the US died in this latest below freezing temps as they were stranded on the highways in white outs from the snow. :'( Hopefully this will make people realize just how dangerous it is to travel not having appropriate gear/clothes for freezing temps. Even if you had hiking boots and winter clothing, it would have been dangerous to try to hike out, first bc of the blizzard conditions, and 2nd the below freezing temps. Clearly keeping water in the car is a good idea too, and some type of protein bars or something in case you get stranded. You won't starve to death in a matter of days, but ofc you need water to survive. It was -3 where we live just a day or two before Christmas. It did move up to 8-9 degrees, but the wind chills were -35 or colder. It is now 20 degrees, so it is warming up... but if we had decided to travel for Christmas and gotten stuck, we would have been in real trouble. We prob would have died. I try to remember to bring blankets with us, and I have a cold weather sleeping bag I had in the trunk (I need to make sure it's in there again bc I think someone removed it. But I believe having these emergency mylar sleeping bags would be a really smart idea. I am not sure if wool blankets (ours aren't wool, but I need to get some or make some) would help all by themselves, or even wool with the cold weather sleeping bags in temperatures as low as what we saw over the past few days. This was very unusual for our area, but you just never know when it could happen. So many people were caught off guard and died stuck on the roads :'( MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PLAN! KEEP AS MUCH AS YOU CAN IN THE CAR THAT WILL HELP IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS!

Hi, there is a very good chanel on here which tries out the old Scottish highlander ways of living. One of these is on the tartan (plaid in america) kilts of the past. The topic stated that the old highlanders would get the woolen kilt damp and while wrapped up in it the body heat would make the moisture in the wool warm which in turn trapped the heat within the kilts. I have not tried this myself, we Scots of today are not tje stern men of the past although we do cope with the cold. Let's face it we need to. On that note, there is a reason we are supplied with woolen bed covers in the military to date, at least the british military. As a result of training both my wifes car amd my work van (truck in america 😁) we always have a dedicated box which is kept in the vehicles. This is basically- Power banks gor phones, batteries, two torches, one hand and one head torch. These sleeping bags just in case, woolen blankets x4 as there may be passengers, a few lighters, water in sealed bottles, a medical kit, playing cards and disposable ponchos just in case they have to stand outside the vehicle by a roadside. We also have an emergency shelter in orange from a company called Rab, they also make clothing. Not sure if that is sold in america. Definitely worth the £80 for the 4-6 person. This is basically a person per corner type shelter unless you have walking poles to help prop it up. Paracord and tent pegs is another I have in my van as I still have my old military poncho which we used as a bivvy in the army. Might seem odd having all of this in a box in both vehicles yet better to have amd not need as they say. Jump leads, tow road, battery boost pack and tyre inflator as well. I put these all in as I would hate my wife and daughters to.be stranded for hours amd have our days of cold with driving rain and be out in the elements. Can't stress enough on using the My Three Words app as well. Each meter of land is given three words which can be put in by an emergency service and find their exact location. Just as good as GPS. Stay safe, all the best from Scotland ❤

I remember I bought one of these a few years ago and when I use it to sleep in my car, some passerby came and saw me in this were scare their life out. They thought they saw a dead body wrap in trash bag inside the car. A cop came by and told me did I hid a body and I told him no it's just me wrapping myself in a sleeping bag that happens to look like a trash bag.

You were using it wromg, they say the correct way to use it is cut a hole in the sealed end and put it over your head. If your out in the open or even cut a whole in the UN taped side just for your face. It keeps your entire body covered for warmth. Never lie down allways sit with knees raised. Hot air rises. So sitting hot air rises towards the head keeping your upper body warmer. It works try it. The open end can be tucked under feet or part left open to allow air circulation to help prevent condensation and you getting wet.

The best thing to keep in your car for a situation like this is a REAL BLANKET! Heck you can go buy a cheap moving blanket at Harbor Freight. I live in a cold climate and I am truly shocked how many people do not keep winter preparations in their cars. Food, water, warmth, & first-aid is essential. And no a disposable hand warmer is not enough. People also fail to realize that those types of reflective heat solutions do not work where you touch them. When you physical touch them, they go from reflective to conductive at the point of contact.
@kenwebster50539 ай бұрын
IMO, they can help temporaily if you then get assistance. The issue with all thermal blankets & bags is condensation. You absoutely must not ever have your breath inside because of the high moisture content of your breath. Even if you remain completely at rest with your breath outside the bag, your skin will exude moisture into the blanket of bag & this will after some hours conduct your body heat right out through the bag, making it totally useless & by then, all your clothing will be wet. You may get 6 hours or so till then, but after that your fate from hypothermia is just about assured. I have a sole Escape Bivvey, which is a somewhat breathable, more robust & reusable version of the same type of bag. Even with this, condensation is it's downfall. If you want something that really will keep you alive a long time, keep a decent down sleeping bag in your car. The kind that backpackers use. Maybe an insulated pad to go under it as well. Next you need to generate energy & for that you need food. Ideally fat rich food for sustained body heat, not carbs. Pemican is a traditional solution, dried meat ground up and mixed with an almost equal weight of tallow & some salt & spices for taste. Your body can not continue to generate heat without an energy rich food. Insulation alone will not keep you warm or alive.
@wlarue Жыл бұрын
There are better options than this; SOL makes a bivvy that breathes, reducing the issue of moisture buildup. Getting wet will allow the cold to get to you much more quickly. There are also Reflexcel bags that have multiple insulating layers that work much, much better than keeping you warm; they also have an emergency jacket, and both come compressed into a brick that is easy to store in the car or under a front seat. Also recommended are the large size heat envelopes, which release heat over time; inside one of these options they will keep you warm. If space allows, a synthetic sleeping bag (handles moisture better than down) is probably better than any mylar option. Space is not at a premium in an automobile, so why go to the mylar extremes when breathable options are better?

they cause your body moisture to condense and soak your clothing. what works MUCH better, but aint chaep, is 2GoSystem's $95 each, 1.5 lb each, very compact XL size reflective tyvek Trifecta Bivy. It's got tie out points, can be worn as a poncho while hiking. It's not much by itself, but if you envelope it in a couple of taped-together, heavy dut drum lliners, it'll give you up to 30F degrees more than ambient temps especially if out in the wind and rain. HOWEVER, you must arrange some way to hold the bivy away from your body and the envelope away from the bivy. A hammock and 2 ridgelines do that, or a couple of milsurp wool blankets will do it. The blankets are too heavy-bulky for hking, but when hiking, you can use the hammock. The bulk and weight of the blankets does'nt matter in a car. that type of wool blanket aint worth much by themselves, but combined with the tyvek bivy and the plastic "envelope", they work just fine!

Add to your car kit some hand warmers. On a very vety cold night. Drop a hand warmer in there. Its like being in heaven. And as the hand warmer is in a reflective bag it hold its heat for ages. Its gorgeous. Even when your not in the car. I actually brlive thr correct way to use it is to cut a whole in the sealed end just below the seam for your face. Anf you put it over your head.

Hi Good point in 7:45 you said it was cold around your shins and below I think it's going to be cold having this bag touch any cold object in the car.. Yes your car would be the best place to be in if you ever get stranded. But watching that video with that young hunk looking naked in a mylar bag with nothing but a smile being outdoors we just can't buy that story. How could wouldn't keep your back warm when you're laying down directly over the snow. The top part of your body might be somewhat warm but the back of your body laying down directly on the snow ain't going to keep u warm. forget about it!! . It's something like cold induction. Ever sat on a cold metal park bench even with some warm pants on? The cold still goes through and this thin mylar cellophane ain't going to keep your butt warm at all. Maybe if you can use a yoga mat or even some corrugated boxes something to buffer you between the direct cold object and your back will help but not as much. I suggest if you you need to take in a cougar or cute little grizzly bear I'll get tightly to keep warmer.. it's always fun sharing this roomy bag with somebody or something that's warm.Yes l. like your honest reveiw on this very good thank you Happy Thanksgiving and upcoming holidays.. In the ad the guy is sitting in an ice bath, then he measures his body temperature, and it's 94°F.. the problem with that is the that you start going into hypothermia at 95°F What kills you is the time you're in the cold. Over time you'll lose your body temperature to the cold. That mylar baggie will not save you.

@commodoor6549 Жыл бұрын
@@ivanmendoza2704 I'm bright enough to know the difference between "not to bright" and "not too bright." Here's what the Illinois Department of Health says, Einstein, " _Hypothermia can be fatal if not detected promptly and treated properly. Even mildly cool indoor temperatures of 60 degrees to 65 degrees F for an extended period of time can trigger hypothermia_ ." Time is the factor you conveniently ignored. When you're basking in front of your AC, cooling off your skin, your internal temperature must be maintained at about 98.6 °F - a 4 °F change in either direction for a lengthy period of time and you die. This is called homeostasis. Your body will adjust over time by shivering or sweating, or some other way of maintaining that acceptable range, like seeking shelter or wearing clothing that insulates you, and consuming calorie rich foods. This is survival 101. If you can't maintain that normal range for a protracted period of time, the enzymes that are busy performing functions in your body denature (change shape) and stop working. You don't think about it but it's a basic homeostasis feedback mechanism and it's happening all day long, back and forth between cooling and heating Look up *_cold denature_* , then come back and we'll discuss... hopefully next time without you acting like an angry child.
@ivanmendoza2704 Жыл бұрын
@@commodoor6549 Your original comment made no sense to me, and to me your trying to justify it .The facts are the ambient temp inside his bag was 94 F, not his internal core temp. And I did not conveniently ignore any time factor period because in this instant time is not a factor. Basic survival as you stated is simple the rule of 3, 3 min no oxygen your dead, 3 hrs without body temp control your dead, 3 day without water your dead, 3 weeks no food your dead. These are just approx. time but you get what im saying. And im not trying to be disrespectfully in any way, so please dont take it that way. And BTW my dog is named Einstein, so my wife who is a PA (Physicians' Assistant), found that hilarious .
