Peter Windsor looks back at Max Verstappen's breathtaking 70th Anniversary GP win at Silverstone. After choosing the hardest Pirelli compound in Q2 on Saturday, Max brilliantly took the lead in the first phase of the race when both Mercedes, which had started on medium Pirellis, stopped before him. Despite a late-race charge from Lewis Hamilton, Max parlayed his advantage into a race win worthy of this race's historic status. Valtteri Bottas finished third for Mercedes and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who (amazingly) stopped only once, crossed the line to finish a stunning P4.

If Max was not there we would have 3 year of racing that would have been so boring. Max is the spice in the soup, the pepper in the curry or the turbo on my car. So happy he is there and he does his own thing!

@@inkjazz The first race max did win and beat RIC. Over the first 6 months they had about the same points. The next year Max did outclass him in almost every race and Q-1-2-3 RIC did run away from the fight like i little bitch. I love RIC. I love his jokes and skills. But running away from RB to Renault because he "thought" that they would get there act together.... jeh... right. He was dissing that motor for 3 years allready.

Akoni Washington It’s not that. Praise Verstappen. He did something that Hamilton wouldn’t dare. Verstappen has the confidence that Hamite has never had. But praise Verstappen without. Including Hamilton. Hamilton did not match up to Verstappen in this race. Max win the race. He was in a class of his own. But it looks like British media people are afraid these days because Hamilton has introduced the evil politics of BLM

With your knowledge of racing history, you are possibly the only one that could reveal to us fans the Real Talent of Max because these so-called race (TV) interviews and post-race press briefings are for true motor racing fans to superficial. @ peterwindsor Peter, I could not wrap my head around why Red Bull were pitting Max on the first set of white tyres when they did, he was getting faster by the lap, faster than Mercedes on their new tyres after they had stopped and it threw him behind Valterri. In hindsight it did not matter, but his tyres looked to have a couple of more laps on them and he was faster all the time. I thought it was a mistake when they boxed him. Keep up the good video's Peter. Love them. (from a Dutchie)

Really enjoyable race and great video by yourself. Agree with you re: the softer tyres, at the end of the day, they were just going to have to deal with it and they have the tools, the smart people, the data to just get on with it. I really didn't expect anyone to 1 stop today, so well done to LeClerc and Max was brilliant, shame that Nico had to take that stop towards the end because of vibrations, but I think he did a great job for Racing Point today. Lots of positive and a fine race for the Anniversary :) F2/F3 were really good too and enjoyed your commentary!

I accidently started the F1 show a little late, after watching a rookie from Sth Africa win MotoGP on a Red Bull KTM. First ever all round. Two great victories for Red Bull, three by the sound of it. Then I started watching F1, saw Max's good start but also the Mercs head off. Then I turned in F1 tv to see live timings and stuff, first I thought they were all wrong then I realized I was all wrong as the times were out and Max was winning. It kind of spoiled the race but also made it much more interesting knowing it wasn't going to be the same old story. So I watched every lap with great interest. Good stuff.

It's interesting that Mercedes had different tire problems on different weekends, even though the tires were essentially the same (one step different). Whatever they adjusted on the setup from race to race must have caused this problem with the rear blisters. Props to Red Bull, they won the tire war this week for sure. I'm really enjoying the compressed schedule this year, but I do feel bad for all the guys on the teams. It has to be a ton of work and stress.

Great and honest comment. As Leclerc’s drive was amazing, my vote for driver of the day went to Nico Hulkenberg. After being just about a tenth slower than Stroll last week after having been flown in last week, he absolutely smashed it this week... it’s a real pity that he had to make that pit stop so late in the race due to the ominous “vibrations.” But still, hitting the ground running last week and then progressing so much just one week later... impressive. Although Max had a good performance, I think the Mercedes strategists also dropped the ball in the last race. I still need to find out if they could have avoided Valteri and Max pitting together. It put VB at a clear disadvantage although they used the information from his worn tires to assist Hamilton. The other blunder Mercedes made this season was in the first race where they could have helped Lewis come second by allowing him to overtake VB thereby cancelling the five second penalty. To be fair to Mercedes Max put up a flawless performance and we should not be harsh on Mercedes

I'm not sure I agree with the Pirelli and or the FIA determining which tires should be used at various races... and their choice then influencing the probable outcome. Pirelli should make all types of tire available and the teams should decide their tire strategy. Some carse do better on one type of tire over another. It's a race for Christ's sake, let the teams race with all available options at their disposal.

I also thought this was a very good race. Looking back, an assessment is of course based on perspective. I like Valtteri Bottas very much as a driver (he and Lando are my favorites right now), and the team strategy was slightly inferior to Lewis Hamilton's team, and both drivers drove a flawless race really. Valtteri said the strategy was not ideal, and I think this is not because Max won the race (although that was part of it), but I think he was alluding also to within Mercedes--that Lewis was able to pass Valtteri near the end--meaning, Lewis' team strategy with tires and pits stops was better than Valtteri's team strategy. That has to be really sour when he is fighting for a championship and within Mercedes, the other driver was set up better. I do not think Lewis drive a better race in this case--he just had better tires to drive on in the last few laps. Regarding Red Bull, they for sure had the advantage since they did not have the excessive downforce eating up the tires. Thumbs up to RB for starting on hards. Max also drove a flawless race and deserved that win.

Think Max would have won that starting on either tyre. The car was so much stronger. Imagine another decent driver besides Max in that team.

If you were following the race closely, you'd have noticed that Bo77as was racing Max, and being the lead mercs car, was entitled to the best strategy, meaning the first to pit. If you remember the Monza race last year, Ham was the leading Mercs racing against Leclerc, his tyres were shot in the closing stages of the race, and was overtaken by Bo77as who had better tyres due to a late pit stop. This is racing, and sometimes these things do happen, nothing sinister in Hams pit stop strategy.

@@dennydee1004 i agree it was not sinister. Just that Valtteri was on the short end, just like Lewis was then.

Without max there wouldnt be anyone racing mercedes and even max usually had to tag along at 10 sec behind them. At least he is usually there to prevent them from having a free put for the fastest round, because all the rest usually is way behind in midfield.

Strategy, pitstops and tire saving are all strong points from red bull. If something goes wrong, they are there. Also max consistently shows to be strong in the corners and having a good exit, usually making up there for the lack of power in the straights.

Didn't Mercedes also have that steering wheel adjustment (push and pull) to their front wheels so they would heat up less in the straights? It's mystifying how they can't seem to manage their tires, really. Or did RBR already find a way to copy that?

That's pretty stereotypical southern England. I live on the coast, about 2 hours from where Peter is driving, and all the houses look the same, the shops (both the design and companies themselves) look the same, the road signs, road markings etc...
